  • World population has increased rapidly following the industrial revolution, reaching 7 billion in 2012. Several forecasts estimate that this number will rise to about 8 billion in 2025. Improvements of living standards in developing nations have also raised resource and energy demands worldwide. In consequences, human beings have faced many global and urgent problems, such as global warming, water and food shortages, resource and energy crises, and so on. Many ocean utilization technologies for avoiding or reducing such big problems have been developed, for examples $CO_2$ ocean sequestration, seawater desalination, artificial upwelling, deepwater mining, and ocean energies. It is important, however, to assess such technologies from the viewpoints of sustainability and public acceptancy, since the aims of those technologies are to develop sustainable social systems rather than conventional ones based on fossil resources. Inclusive Marine Pressure Assessment and Classification Technology Research Committee (generally called IMPACT Research Committee) of Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, has proposed Inclusive Impact Index "Triple I" as an indicator, which can predict both environmental sustainability and economical feasibility, in order to assess the ocean utilization technologies from the viewpoints of sustainability and public acceptancy. This index was considered by combining Ecological Footprint and Environmental Risk Assessment. The Ecological Footprint and the Environmental Risk Assessment are introduced in the first part of this paper. Then the concept and the structure of the Triple I are explained in the second part of this paper. Finally, the economy-ecology conversion factor in Triple I accounting is considered.

  • This paper represents an investigation into the pattern of carbon transportation and composition on an open estuary in the transition zone between the river and marine environment in Tamjin River where stream water flows into the Gangjin Bay. To conduct the study, seven plots were established along an environmental gradient from river and estuary to the ocean. Surface water samples were collected thrice during the summer rainfalls and non-flooding seasons in 2017. The samples were then measured for the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon ([DOC]), particulate organic carbon ([POC]) and dissolved inorganic carbon ([DIC]). An analysis of the results showed that [POC] did not increase in the river even during the summer rainfall. However, [DOC] increased resulting in a higher [DOC]:[POC] ratios for the non-flooding season compared to summer rainfall events. On the other hand, the marine site of the estuary bay showed the highest [DIC] which was stable relative to those of river sites. The results suggest that in an open estuary zone, river and ocean supplied the open estuary zone with different types of carbon materials; mainly DOC supplied from the river and DIC sourced from the ocean.

  • There are islands about 3,200 in Korea surrounded by the sea side. The region of islands is the transition areas which are a border in the land and marine ecosystem. It is rich in biodiversity depending on the interaction among inland, sea and atmosphere. However, it is worried that damages of marine environment is increased because the more national income and demands ofmarine leisure increase, the more development projects are grown in marine areas. Also this trends are extending in island areas. Incheon Metropolitan city has huge island areas which are both inhabited and deserted islands. The range of island areas is very wide, so it is difficult for the city government to manage environment in the island areas. Therefore, this paper analyzed and discussed the actual conditions about managing marine environment at island areas.

  • Marine oil spill accidents not only devastates marine ecosystem but also Ins significant adverse socio-economic impact on local community whose living is dependent on clean marine system Although the Marine Environment Management Act of the Republic of Korea stipulates tim marine pollution impact survey must be conducted at the time of the oil spill, the articles do not provide specifics or concrete survey items for socio-economic impact assessment Moreover, there are redundancy questions in the provisions related to socio-economic impact assessment. This paper examined several difficulties encountered in carrying out the socio-economic impact assessment for marine oil spill as required in the law, and presented some recommendation., for the plan to improve the assessment mechanism systematically through the development of the research categories and indicators of socio-economic impact assessment.

  • We evaluated the toxic effects of antifouling paint (irgarol and diuron) on the population growth rate (r) of the marine diatom, Skeletonema costatum. The r of S. costatum was determined after 96 hrs of exposure to irgarol (0, 0.31, 0.63, 1.25, 2.5 and 5 ㎍ l-1) and diuron (0, 7.81, 15.63, 31.25, 62.5 and 125 ㎍ l-1). It was observed that r in the control (absence of irgarol and diuron) were greater than 0.04, while r in the treatment groups decreased with increasing irgarol and diuron concentrations. Irgarol and diuron reduced r in a dose-dependent manner with significant decreases occurring at concentrations above 0.63 and 15.63 ㎍ l-1, respectively. The EC50 values of r in irgarol and diuron exposure were 1.09 and 45.45 ㎍ l-1. No observed effect concentration (NOEC) were 0.31 and 7.81 ㎍ l-1, the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) were 0.63 and 15.63 ㎍ l-1. This result indicate that a concentration of greater than 0.63 ㎍ l-1 of irgarol and 15.63 ㎍ l-1 of diuron in marine ecosystems induced to decreasing r of S. costatum. Also, these toxic values can be useful as a baseline data for the toxic evaluation of irgarol and diuron in marine ecosystems.

  • Responses of plankton populations to nutrient enrichment in mesocosm experiments in Shihwa lake were simulated using FVCOM. Dissoloved oxygen module was added to the FVCOM to simulate impacts of its decreased levels. The ecological model included the major components of the pelagic ecosystem including nutrients, phytoplankton (pico-, nano-, micro-), zooplankton (two groups of protozoa, mesozooplankton), particulate organic matter, dissolved organic matter and bacteria, and was calibrated using trophodynamic data collected from Gyeonggi Bay and Shihwa Lake. The model was able to reproduce major responses of plankton populations to nutrient enrichment, including phytoplankton of different size groups, change of dominance of protozoa from < 20 ${\mu}m$ oligotrichs to scuticociliates, and reponses to bacteria and low levels of dissolved oxygen in water column of the mesocosms.

  • Marine heatwaves (MHWs), referring to anomalously high sea surface temperatures, have drawn significant attention from marine scientists due to their broad impacts on the surface marine ecosystem, fisheries, weather patterns, and various human activities. In this study, we examined the impact of the distribution of Changjiang diluted water (CDW), a significant factor causing oceanic property changes in the East China Sea (ECS) during the summer, on MHWs. The surface salinity distribution in the ECS indicates that from June to August, the eastern extension of the CDW influences areas as far as Jeju Island and the Korea Strait. In September, however, the CDW tends to reside in the Changjiang estuary. Through the Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis of the cumulative intensity of MHWs during the summer, we extracted the loading vector of the first mode and its principal component time series to conduct a correlation analysis with the distribution of the CDW. The results revealed a strong negative spatial correlation between areas of the CDW and regions with high cumulative intensity of MHWs, indicating that the reinforcement of stratification due to low-salinity water can increase the intensity and duration of MHWs. This study suggests that the CDW may still influence the spatial distribution of MHWs in the region, highlighting the importance of oceanic environmental factors in the occurrence of MHWs in the waters surrounding the Korean Peninsula.
