  • Design of ocean fishways as eco-movement passages for turbine structures, sluice structures and barrages of a environmentally-friendly tidal power system through which fish can pass are suggested. The ocean fishways comprise a plurality of fishways to allow fish to move between the sea-side and the lake-side of the barrages and turbine structures and sluice structures. It is demonstrated that the inventive ocean fishways are cost effective to construct and environmentally-friendly eco-movement passages for fish and benthos to move between sea-side and lake-side without passing through the turbine blades of a tidal power plant in operation.

• In this study, the heavy metal analysis in sediments (surface sediments, sediments cores and settling particles) from Shihwa Lake has been carried out to evaluate the changes of metal pollution levels in sediments after the operation of Tidal Power Plant (TPP). The average concentrations of metals in surface sediments sampled in 2015 were 8% (Cd)~31% (Zn, Hg) lower than in 2009 before TPP operation. Results of calculating the pollution load index (PLI) with 8 metals, the PLI value in 2015 showed a 18% decrease compared to 2009. However, Cu, Zn, Pb concentrations of surface sediments in 2015 at the upper region around industrial complex still exceeded the TEL (threshold effect level) values for sediment quality guideline in Korea. After the operation of TPP, the metal contaminated depths were increasing from 15 cm to 30 cm at S6 site and from 8 cm to 20 cm at S7 site, respectively. Our data showed that the mean concentration of heavy metals in core samples decreased but the contaminated depth increased. The average of the total sedimentation flux for particulate matter increased by 3.2 times from 32.5 g/㎡/d in 2009 to 103.5 g/㎡/d in 2015. This showed that the bottom sediments were resuspended by the operation of TPP, resulting in an increase of particulate matter in the water column. These results suggest that the sediments contaminated with heavy metals seem to be resuspended and relocated due to the water current caused by the operation of TPP. Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd were highly exceeding the TEL values in the upstream region and accumulated more than 40 cm of sediment depth, indicating that heavy metal contamination through industrial activity were still a serious environmental problem of Shihwa Lake. Although the metal pollution of Shihwa Lake has been slightly reduced, the contaminated sediments with heavy metals inside of Shihwa Lake might be discharged to outer sea after the resuspension by TPP operation. It is necessary for the advanced scientific approach and political decision to drastically reduce the heavy metal pollution of the study region.

  • The basin of Lake Shihwa is one of highly industrialized region of Korea and a current environmental issue of study area is the operation of tidal power plant (TPP) to improve water quality. The application of water quality index (WQI) which integrates five physiochemical parameters (transparency, DO, DIN, DIP and chlorophyll-a) of water quality in Lake Shihwa and outer sea during 2011~2012 were performed not only to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of the water quality but also to assess the effect of water quality improvement by the operation of tidal power plant. The higher WQI values were observed in monitored sites near the industrial complexes in Lake Shihwa and the outfall of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in outer sea. This indicates that the quality of seawater is influenced by diffuse non-point sources from industrial, municipal and agricultural areas in Lake Shihwa and by point sources from the effluence of municipal and industrial wastewater throughout WWTPs in outer sea. Mean WQI value decreased from 53.0 in 2011 to 42.8 in 2012 of Lake Shihwa. Water quality has improved significantly after TPP operation because enhancement of seawater exchange between Lake Shihwa and outer sea leads to improve a hypoxic condition which is primarily a problem in Lake Shihwa. Mean WQI of outer sea showed similar values between 2011 and 2012. However, the results of hierarchical cluster analysis and the deterioration of water quality in summer season indicate that the operation of tidal power plant was not improved the water quality in the upper most area of Lake Shihwa. To successfully improve overall water quality of Lake Shihwa, it is urgently necessary to manage and reduce of non-point pollution sources of the basin of Lake Shihwa.

  • Phytoplankton chlorophyll-a concentrations and primary productivities were measured and analyzed in the adjacent waters of Kori Nuclear Power Plant where thermal effluent is being discharged chlorophyll-a concentrations were ranged from 1.89 to 12.8 ug/l. Nanoplankton 9cell size; 3∼20 um) fractions of the total chlorophyll-a concentrations were ranged from 4.60 to 65.95% and picoplankton (cell size<3um) fractions contributed from 15.71 to 83.20%. Primary productivities measured by C 14 method were ranged from 165.17 to 645.79 mgC/m$^2$ /day and, nanoplankton and picoplankton contribution rate to the total primary productivity were ranged from 8.06 to 43.98% and from 19.64 to 81.45% respectively. these results imply that very tiny cell sized phytoplankton population are important in point of biomass and primary productivity of phytoplankton communities.

  • In this study, structural strain responses of the jacket-type Uldolmok tidal current power plant structure under severe tidal environments were measured and analyzed using long-term measurement system during construction and also operation. It was observed that there were significant changes in strain responses at the steps of jacket lifting, block loading, pile ejection and insertion. Strains due to dead loads and tidal loads were analyzed before and after removal of a jacket leg, and it was also found that the strains due to dead load were much significantly changed after jacket leg removal. From the measurement data during operation, it was found that strain responses were fluctuated with M2 and M4 tidal periods and also relatively short period of about 10 min due to the peculiar tidal characteristics in the Uldolmok strait. Finally, the neural network-based non-parametric estimation models were investigated to build up the signal-based structural damage monitoring system.

  • In this study, a tsunami fragility methodology was determined for a probabilistic safety assessment(PSA) induced tsunami event in Nuclear Power Plant(NPP) site. For this purpose, a fragility evaluation method was presented using previous external PSA method. Failure mode and failure criteria about major safety related equipments and structures were determined. Finally, a tsunami fragility assessment was performed for offsite transformer in NPP site. For the fragility evaluation, structural failure like overturning and sliding and functional failure induced by inundation. Through this study, it can be concluded that a functional failure according to inundation height was governed total probability of failure of offsite transformer in NPP.

  • Recently, as a result of increasing concern about eco-friendly power, the demand for the power stations using environmentally friendly powers such as photovoltaic energy, wind force, tidal power, and tidal current has been increasing worldwide. Among these power stations tidal current power plant requires strong current generated by the topographic characteristics of the ocean floor. Uldolmok waterway producing very strong current is an ideal location for a tidal current power generation. However the occurrence of anthropogenic underwater noise generated by the tidal current power station may affect the marine environment. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the noise radiated from the station and predict the range influenced by the radiated noise. In this paper, the measurements of radiated noise spectrum level by the tidal current power station are presented, and the source level per unit area is estimated. Finally, the propagation properties of the radiated noise in the Uldolmok waterway is evaluated from the model simulation using the parabolic equation method, RAM.

  • Distribution of surface and suspended sediments was studied to understand sedimentary processes of finegrained sediment near the cooling water intake of Pyongtaek power plant on the west coast of Korea. The grainsize of surface sediment during the winter was coarser in the opened northern area than sheltered southern area. During the summer, finer sediment was found in the east (landward) than west due under dominantly the influence of tidal current. The concentration of suspended sediments was higher in the winter than summer and in the mid- to deep waters than surface waters. Asymmetry of tidal current induced net landward transport of suspended sediments. Landward transport of suspended sediments was most significant at the beginning of flood time when water level is low. Net suspended sediment fluxes ranged from 3.4$\times$10$^{-3}$ kg.m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ to 5.7$\times$10$^{-3}$ kg.m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ This large landward transport of suspended sediments is attributable to combination of enhanced flow induced by intake of cooling water and artificial structures near the water intake.
