COMS (Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite), the Korea's first geostationary Earth observation satellite, started to operate 24 hours to observe Land/Ocean/Atmosphere with the MI (Meteorological Imager) and GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager). After the successful completion of the IOT (In-Orbit Test), the satellite is in normal operation from April of 2011. This paper describes an algorithm for scan mirror emissivity compensation of the COMS MI and its software implementation.
In this study, an overview of the Earth Observing System (EOS) program is provided with discussions on its spacecrafts and instruments, and on the scientific issues. The EOS satellites aim at monitoring the Earth environmental system by observing parameters of subsystems such as atmosphere, ocean, land, and biosphere. The first EOS flagship, Terra, was launched on December 1999. Five instruments onboard Terra can measure cloud and aerosol properties, radiation, terrestrial surface, and ocean color. The second EOS flagship, Aqua, which was launched on May 2002, loads six instruments that measure clouds, radiation, precipitation, terrestrial surface, ocean color and sea surface temperature. The observational data available from the EOS satellites may complement data from the Communication-Oceanography-Meteorology satellite, which will be launched in 2008, for meteorological and environmental forecasts.

The persistence analysis of marine physical environment factors is a basic analysis that must precede the use of sea areas as an analysis required in the coastal engineering such as downtime and design. In this study, the persistence analysis was implemented for wind speed and significant wave height data from four observation points of Deokjeokdo, Oeyeondo, Geomundo, and Geojedo among the marine meteorological observation buoys of the Korea Meteorological Administration. The persistence time means the consecutive time of observation data beyond specific level. The threshold wind speed and significant wave height were set in the range of 1~15 m/s and the range of 0.25~3.0 m, respectively. Then, the persistence time was extracted. As a result of the analysis, the persistence time of wind speed and significant wave height decreased rapidly as the reference value increased. The median persistence times under the maximum reference thresholds were assessed as a maximum of 5 hours for wind speed and a maximum of 8 hours for significant wave height. When the reference wind speed and significant wave height were 15 m/s and 3 m, respectively, the persistence time that could occur with a 1% probability were 52 and 56 hours. This study can be expanded to all coastal areas in Korea, and it is expected that various engineering applications by performing a persistence analysis of the metocean data.

The Global Ocean Data Assimilation and Prediction System (GODAPS) in operation at the KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) is introduced. GODAPS consists of ocean model, ice model, and 3-d variational ocean data assimilation system. GODAPS assimilates conventional and satellite observations for sea surface temperature and height, observations of sea-ice concentration, as well as temperature and salinity profiles for the ocean using a 24-hour data assimilation window. It finally produces ocean analysis fields with a resolution of 0.25 ORCA (tripolar) grid and 75-layer in depth. This analysis is used for providing a boundary condition for the atmospheric model of the KMA Global Seasonal Forecasting System version 5 (GloSea5) in addition to monitoring on the global ocean and ice. For the purpose of evaluating the quality of ocean analysis produced by GODAPS, a one-year data assimilation experiment was performed. Assimilation of global observing system in GODAPS results in producing improved analysis and forecast fields with reduced error in terms of RMSE of innovation and analysis increment. In addition, comparison with an unassimilated experiment shows a mostly positive impact, especially over the region with large oceanic variability.
The satellite in the geostationary orbit rotates around Earth center with the same angular rate as the Earth. So, the Earth can be observed with sequential time series. GOES(Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites)-9 is a meteorological satellite, which is now located at 155ㆁE geostationary orbit location in order to monitor East-Asia meteorological environment including Korean Peninsular. Every meteorological information is acquired from GOES-9 with the period of about 1 hour. COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) has been developed by KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) since 2003 and will be launched at 2008. COMS will be located at different orbit location compared to GOES-9. In this study, a simulated COMS image which is the perspective from different geostationary orbit location is generated using an GOES-9 image.

Meteorological phenomena are observed by the Korea Meteorological Administration in a variety of ways (e.g., surface, upper-air, marine, ocean, and aviation). However, there are limits to the meteorological observation of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) that greatly affects human life. In particular, observations using a sonde or aircraft require significant observational costs in economic terms. Therefore, the goal of this study was to measure and analyze the meteorological factors of the vertical distribution of the see-land breeze among local meteorological phenomena using meteorological drones. To investigate the spatial distribution of the see-land breeze, a same integrated meteorological sensor was mounted on each drone at three different points (seaside, bottom of mountain, and mountainside), including the Boseong tall tower (BTT) at the Boseong Standard Weather Observatory (BSWO) in the Boseong region. Vertical profile observations for air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and air pressure were conducted up to 400 m every 30 minutes from 1100 LST to 1800 LST on August 4, 2018. The spatial characteristics of meteorological phenomena for temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure were not shown at the four points. Strong winds (~8 m s-1) were observed from the midpoint (~100 m) at strong solar radiation hour, and in the afternoon the wind direction changed from the upper layer at the inland area to the west wind. It is expected that the analysis results of the lower atmospheric layer observed using the meteorological drone may help to improve the weather forecast more accurately.
Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite(COMS) for the hybrid mission of meteorological observation, ocean monitoring, and telecommunication service is planned to be launched onto Geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) in 2008 according to the korea national space program, For the development of the meteorological payload of COMS, imager, the characteristics of Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) for GEO meteorological imager is investigated and the theoretical MTF limit is analyzed for each spectral channel of the imager in the both cases of a currently operating GEO instrument technology and an advanced GEO instrument technology under development. This study shows that MTF value can be considerably low in the infrared channels with longer wavelength than 10㎛ due to diffraction effect so that the MTF performance of long wavelength infrared channels should be paid attention to for the development of the imager.
