  • Soil plasticity models for cyclic and dynamic loads are essential in non-linear numerical analysis of geotechnical structures. While a single yield surface model shows a linear behavior for cyclic loads, J2-bounding surface plasticity model with zero elastic region can effectively simulate a nonlinearity of the ground response with the same material properties. The radius of the yield surface inside the boundary surface converged to 0 to make the elastic region disappear, and plastic hardening modulus and dilatancy define plastic strain increment. This paper presents the stress-strain incremental equation of the developed model, and derives plastic hardening modulus for the hyperbolic model. The comparative analyses of the triaxial compression test and the shallow foundation under the cyclic load can show stable numerical convergence, consistency with the theoretical solution, and hysteresis behavior. In addition, plastic hardening modulus for the modified hyperbolic function is presented, and a methodology to estimate model variables conforming 1D equivalent linear model is proposed for numerical modeling of the multi-dimensional behavior of the ground.

  • This research was processed on morphological and physical characteristics of 'Yongdong' cultivar nuts. (1)Morphological properties of 'Yongdong' cultivar nuts were significantly different from the control, native species, in respect of all properties. (2) 'Yongdong' cultivar nuts showed higher figures than the native species on 9 items of morphological properties (kernel weight, size, length and width of pad on suture and etc.), whereas other 6 items (height of pad on suture, thickness of shell and septem, fragment numbers of isolated kernel, roundness index, and etc.) showed lower figures than those of the control. (3) In physical properties of the nut shells, 'Yongdong' cultivar was superior to the control at all items with the exception of compressive prove distance. Accordingly, it was also verified as effective cultivar of shelled walnut with suture line direction applied the minimum strength. (4) 'Yongdong' cultivar, 21.9 kg, was approximately twice lower than the control, 42.6 kg, on maximum compressive weight. It was demonstrated that the 'Yongdong' cultivar characterized by easily crushing shell by small strength was great in cracking properties. (5) On the study of yield strength, the native species being twice higher than 'Yongdong' cultivar showed the properties of the small elasticity and the shell hardness. While, the suture line of 'Yongdong' cultivar having the lowest yield strength 15.6 kg and 16.0 kg was identified the shell crushed easily. (6) The movement distance of the compressive prove of 'Yongdong' cultivar, 4.2 mm, was longer than that of the control, 2.7 mm. Subsequently, it means that the amount of loss possibly occurring to distribution process was not great, whereby productive value was high. (7) The compressive strength of the suture line of 'Yongdong' cultivar, $9.1kg/cm^2$, was much lower than total average of that $12.4kg/cm^2$. It was also statistically different with other properties. (8)The hardness examination by the compressive position revealed that the suture line of 'Yongdong' cultivar, $149.8kg/cm^2$, was lowest in contrast with the control, $300.9kg/cm^2$.

  • The span deflection among the monitoring items of bridge measurement system in real time is representative behaviour and important index of superstructure condition. the limit of span deflection in Standard Specifications for Highway Bridge in Korea has been applied to the method that is making the management-criteria for span deflection in bridge measurement system. But the limit concern mainly serviceability of divers. So it is difficult to find the safety factor of the limit from the viewpoint of bridge safety. This study estimated the safety factor of the limit of span-deflection in Standard Specifications for Highway Bridge in Korea from the viewpoint of bridge safety by the indoor structural test.

  • This study estimated ultimate load by the determination methods based on ultimate load, yield load and settlement using experimental data from static load tests that applied load to driven piles used in sandy grounds at home and overseas until failure appeared markedly. Estimated ultimate load was normalized with actually measured failure load, and was compared among the determination methods according to the characteristics of pile. In addition, I have identified to the determination methods suitable for estimating ultimate load, and reevaluated the safety factor when determining allowable load. From the results of this study were drawn conclusions as follows. Among ultimate loads estimated by the ultimate-load-based determination methods, the value interpreted by Chin's method tended to overestimate actual measurements, and B. Hansen 80% standard and the stability plot method were considered most reliable as their results were closest to actual measurements. According to the results of this study, in calculating the allowable load, if the safety factor to be applied to failing load obtained by the method of determining extreme load is converted to the safety factor applied to the Standards for Structure Foundation Design, a value larger than 3.0 should be applied except the B. Hansen 90% method, and a value larger than 2.0 should be applied in the methods of determining yield load. In addition, if the safety factor to be applied to load obtained by the settlement standard is converted based on safety factor 3.0 for extreme load, a value smaller than 3.0 should be applied to the total settlement standard and the net settlement standard.

  • A general analysis method is proposed for analysis of the superposed structures with geometric and material nonlinearities. It is presumed that no friction occurs between structures. It utilizes a shell element for the geometric and material nonlinearities and imposes various deformation constraints for the contact and interaction between structures. To show the reliability and effectiveness of this method, superposed cantilevers for which exact solutions can be obtained and holddown spring assemblies which are now used in PWR reactors are chosen as analysis models. The results of analyses were compared with exact solution in the case of cantilevers and with test results in the case of holddown spring assemblies. The analysis results obtained by this method showed good agreement with the reference values.

  • A fully coupled effective stress dynamic analysis procedure for modeling seismic liquefaction on slope is presented. An elasto-plastic formulation is used for the constitutive model UBCSAND in which the yield loci are radial lines of constant stress ratio and the flow rule is non-associated. This is incorporated into the 2D version of Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) by modifying the existing Mohr-Coulomb model. This numerical procedure is used to simulate centrifuge test data from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). UBCSAND is first calibrated to cyclic direct simple shear tests performed on Nevada sand. Both pre- and post-liquefaction behaviour is captured. The centrifuge test is then modeled and the predicted accelerations, excess porewater pressures, and displacements are compared with the measurements. The results are shown to be in general agreement. The procedure is currently being used in the design of liquefaction remediation measures for a number of dam, bridge, tunnel, and pipeline projects in Western Canada.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of CFT Column to H-Beam Endplate Connections with penetrated H/T bolts under monotonic loading. The object of this study is to estimate accurately the effect about the thickness of endplate and the arrangement of H/T bolts which was not got a grip on the results reported in the previous paper. Main parameters are the thickness of endplates (12mm, 16mm) and the arrangemement of H/T bolts (EP1, EP2, EP3 Type). The experimental results compared and analysed. 1) The specimens were classified by Bjorhovde's and EC3's method. 2) A formula to predict the ultimate moment of connection was derived based on the T-stub model, and theoretical value $(_tM_u)$ computed by the formula corresponded to the experimental value $(_eM_u)$.

  • In performing the reliability analysis for predicting the settlement with time of alluvial clay layer at Kobe airport, the uncertainties of geotechnical properties were examined based on the stochastic and probabilistic theory. By using Terzaghi's consolidation theory as the objective function, the failure probability was normalized based on AFOSM method. As the result of reliability analysis, the occurrence probabilities for the cases of the target settlement of ${\pm}10%,\;{\pm}25%$ of the total settlement from the deterministic analysis were 30~50%, 60%~90%, respectively. Considering that the variation coefficients of input variable are almost similar as those of past researches, the acceptable error range of the total settlement would be expected in the range of 10% of the predicted total settlement. As the result of sensitivity analysis, the factors which affect significantly on the settlement analysis were the uncertainties of the compression coefficient Cc, the pre-consolidation stress Pc, and the prediction model employed. Accordingly, it is very important for the reliable prediction with high reliability to obtain reliable soil properties such as Cc and Pc by performing laboratory tests in which the in-situ stress and strain conditions are properly simulated.

  • Estimation of tensile properties measurement uncertainty of material was carried out. Sources of uncertainty affecting the measurement of tensile properties were classified and analyzed. The models for uncertainty evaluation of measurands to be determined from tensile test, such as elastic modulus, yield strength and tensile strength, were suggested and derived from the mathematical relations, corresponding to the respective measurands, and the measuring quantities by calculating each sensitivity coefficient of the quantities. Based on these models, the uncertainty of the tensile properties was evaluated from the experimental data of SUS316LN determined according to ISO 6892.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of superstructure considering several factors such as change of pile rigidity, soil characteristics, and the constraint condition of support. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Pile-rigidity computed by the rotating deformed plane method is continuously varied up to approximately 5D(D=diameter of pile) below the ground level. This result is consistent with the previous study$^{(12)}$, in which the pile deformation occurs at approximately $3{\sim}6$ times of pile diameter from the ground level. 2. For bridge structure-pile system, analytical results of internal forces and deformations show different values for modified pile rigidity and unchanged pile rigidity. 3. Detaild analysis considering modified pile rigidity is required for the long-span bridge design with structure pile system.
