  • The IMO has adopted emission standards through Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) that strictly prohibit the use of bunker C oil for vessels. In this study, we have adopted the turret-moored Floating LNG-Bunkering Terminal (FLBT) which is designed to receive the LNG from LNGCs and transfer it to LNG-bunkering shuttles in side-by-side moored condition. Numerical analyses were carried out using the high-order boundary-element method for four vessels at various relative distances. Mean wave drift forces were compared in an operational sea state. A model test was performed in the ocean engineering basin at the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) to verify the safety of the berthing/unberthing operation. In the model test, a jig was designed to simulate tug boats pushing or pulling the bunkering vessels, so that the friction force of the g operation was not affected. Safety depended on the environmental direction, with more stable operation possible if the heading-control function of FLBT is applied to avoid beam-sea conditions.

  • In this study, the resistance test, the vertical static angle of the attack test and VPMM test will be conducted to estimate the maneuverability of underwater vehicles with ahead propeller. The vertical static test will be conducted within the range of -40deg to 40deg, to investigate the cross-flow drag at high incidence angles. The tests will be conducted by dividing the propeller rotation into a case in which the propeller rotates at a specific rpm, and a case in which the propeller rotates naturally, according to the towing speed. Hydrodynamic coefficients of vertical direction will be estimated by the captive model tests. Additionally, the vertical dynamic stability index based on estimated hydrodynamic coefficients will be calculated and the impact of the propeller revolution state on the index will be investigated. The results are expected to be used as reference test data for underwater vehicles with ahead propeller.

  • The 'gate non-stop system utilizing RFID (900MHz)', which is the core of this research, is the system which connects RFID to recognize the vehicle information without stopping when a vehicle (trailer) passes a gate to carry in or out containers in a terminal and automatically provides the container information provided by the terminal for the RFLDU device installed in the vehicle. In order to design and implement this, the RFID technical section uses a UHF band (900MHz) RFID tag and a reader and implements a RFID middleware and an application program for smooth data collection and execution (operation). In addition, the system stability was verified through experiments and operations of the system implemented in this research at real harbors/quays, and based on the verified result, the maximization of vehicle (trailer) and terminal productivity and the reduction of distribution cost are expected.

  • Since the shipbuilding industry is at its peak to assimilate the large volume of orders in recent years, the Floating Dock has been an alternative to the dry dock which takes a certain period of time to build. Hence the use of Floating Dock is steadily increasing. Since the Skid Launching System(SLS) is used in Floating Dock, the balancing of the ship while launching is important and achieved by adjusting the Ballast tank of the Floating Dock. In this paper a Floating Dock Control Simulator for SLS is developed through the on-line interface of VRC(Valve Remote Control), Tank Level & Draft Measuring System and Valve Control algorithm on Simulation Tank Plan.

  • Because there are only a limited number of means of action that are available for the master to pursue in the event of flooding, onboard decision support system has been required. The majority of systems activated during a flooding emergency (such as watertight and semi-watertight doors, bulkhead valves, dewatering pumps etc.) almost exclusively aim to restore a sufficiently high level of subdivision to prevent flooding from spreading through the ship. Even though assuming the flooding scenario is not catastrophic, the use of ballast tanks can be an additional and very effective tool to ensure both prevention of flooding spreading and also improve ship stability. This paper describes an optimization algorithm devised to choose the set of ballast tanks that should be filled in order to achieve an optimal response to a flooding accident.

  • Maritime transport has been occupying the biggest part of the container transportation market. With regard to container terminal management, the planning technology and the space allocation system on the yard are very significant factors to secure the stability of ship and to ensure the reliability of schedules of ship throughout keeping barycenter of vessel by right loading and fast handling of cargoes. The purposes of this paper are to illustrate the existing yard management systems such as Grouping method and Random Grounding method, and then to evaluate and compare the efficiency of yard availability between the existing management system(Grouping method) and Random Grouping which uses the forecasted inbound cargo volume at the gate by Time Base Operation.

  • It is necessary to estimate more accurately the resistance of barge in still water and waves to compute the break load of towline and towing power for safety towing performance. The method proposed by government has calculated the total resistance of barge which is composed of frictional resistance, wave making resistance and air resistance considering the shape of hull and towing speed. However, the added resistance is equally applied with the significant wave height regardless of the type of vessels. In this study, we have carried out the numerical calculation to estimate the added resistance of wigley model in waves and compared with the experiment data to confirm the accuracy of the method. Then the computation was executed for the barge varying shape of the bow. As a result, added resistance of barge was differently occurred i.e. 0.3∼1.1 ton according to encounter angle, 0.4∼1.2 ton according to towing speed and 0.5∼1.1 ton according to shape of bow.

  • QUICKER scheme has several attractive properties. However, under highly convective conditions, it produces overshoots and possibly some oscillations on each side of steps in the dependent variable when the flow is convected at an angle oblique to the grid line. Fortunately, it is possible to modify the QUICKER scheme using non-linear and linear functional relationship. Details of the development of polynomial upwinding scheme are given in this paper, where it is seen that this non-linear scheme has also third order accuracy. This polynomial upwinding scheme is used as the basis for the SHARPER and SMARTER schemes. Another revised scheme was developed by partial modification of QUICKER scheme using CDS and UPWIND schemes(QUICKUP). These revised schemes are tested at the well known bench mark flows, Two-Dimensional Pure Convection Flows in Oblique-Step, Lid Driven Cavity Flows and Buoyancy Driven Cavity Flows. For pure convection oblique step flow test problem, QUICKUP, SMARTER and SHARPER schemes remain absolutely monotonic without overshoot and oscillation. QUICKUP scheme is more accurate than any other scheme in their relative accuracy. In high Reynolds number Lid Driven Cavity Flow, SMARTER and SHARPER schemes retain lower computational cost than QUICKER and QUICKUP schemes, but computed velocity values in the revised schemes produced less predicted values than QUICKER scheme which is strongly effected by overshoot and undershoot values. Also, in Buoyancy Driven Cavity Flow, SMARTER, SHARPER and QUICKUP schemes give acceptable results.

  • Lab scale experiment study was carried out for biological treatment process development in cruise. SBR(Sequence Batch Reactor) process with BM(Beneficial Microorganisms) was investigated for practical application on shipboard sewage treatment. From the results it was suggested that SBR process with BM might be a suitable process for advanced cruise sewage treatment in terms of decrease in T-N and T-P, maintenance of useful microorganisms and control of sludge bulking. By adding BM to SBR system, about 40% of EPS in sludge was increased, about 74% of total nitrogen was reduced and the total phosphorus reduction averaged 75%.
