  • This article described the development of transparent antimicrobial oxo-biodegradable (AOB) film with the function of enhanced freshness of food by employing oxo-biodegradable masterbatch (MB) and antimicrobial MB together with organic metal salt, organic acid, or unsaturated fatty acid. Antibacterial test of the AOB film with the different contents of the antimicrobial MB resulted in the significant freshness extension of plum. Tensile strength and elongation rate of the AOB films before UV treatment were similar to those of polyethylene films used as control. The reduced mechanical properties of AOB film after UV treatment (340 nm) suggested that the AOB film could be degraded by oxo biodegradation. The developed AOB films can effectively prevent decomposition of food by providing antibacterial function and preserving freshness.

  • To enhance antibiotic function of plastic containers, many methods have been applied. Most of the methods utilize antibiotic properties of antibiotic substances such as silver containing chemicals. Sometimes antibiotic substances are used without long term stability test as food container additives. Basically, this kind of methods is not safe since it is based on the antibiotic properties of the material itself and hence direct contact between food and container additives is unavoidable to obtain antibiotic effect. In this paper, a new concept of information templation was applied to make food containers with antibiotic function. It has been known recently that water memorize informations and this information could be tempelated to other materials through appropriate methods. One of the participating company developed this method to template informations onto plastic materials. Food containers were produced using this plastic chips and experimental results showed that antibiotic functional information temptation method is effective for practical application. Results and discussions are reported in this paper.

  • Paeonia lactiflora Pall. was extracted with water and the Paeonia lactiflora Pall. extract (PLE) was tested for antimicrobial activities against Corynebacterium xerosis, Candida albicans, Listeria monocytogenes and Pseudomonas syringae. PLE showed pronounced antimicrobial effects at concentrations at or above 50 ${\mu}g$/mL. The activities were stable at $100^{\circ}C$ and over the pH range of 3-11. PLE may serve as a natural antimicrobial agent in food preservation. It is suggested that hydrophillic components in the extract synergistically perturb microbial membrane functions.

  • This study was performed to develop antimicrobial films using polyvinyl alcohol and methyl cellulose. Methyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol films plasticized with PEG(polyethylene glycol) were prepared by solvent casting process under addition of 0.025~1.0 wt% ampicillin and 0.1~1.0 wt% streptomycin as an antimicrobial agent. The mechanical properties of prepared films were examined by universal testing machine(UTM). Tensile strength of methyl cellulose films was 15.44~21.70 $N/mm^2$. Tensile strength of PVA(15 wt%) film was 20.2~51.5 $N/mm^2$, and the tensile strength of the antimicrobial films were decreased linearly with increasing the antibiotic loading amount up to 1 wt%. Antimicrobial activities of PVA and methyl cellulose films containing ampicillin and streptomycin through the disc diffusion test for the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The antimicrobial activity of methyl cellulose films and PVA containing ampicillin were higher than that of containing streptomycin methyl cellulose films. The results indicate the films may be a proper materials for antimicrobial packing applications.

  • Pinus rigida Miller leaf extract (PRLE) showed antimicrobial activity remarkably against food pathogenic and spoilage bacteria at concentrations of $100{\sim}250{\mu}g/mL$. Alcohol-soluble PRLE had higher antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and E-coli than any other-soluble PRLE such as butanol, ethyl acetate, ether and water. As PRLE concentration increased alcohol-soluble PRLE increased the remarkable inhibitory zone of microbial growth on the microbial media. PRLE showed good stability against temperature and pH in the range of $40{\sim}150^{\circ}C$ and $4{\sim}11$, respectively. This may indicate that PRLE can be a potential anti-microbial agent for industrial application. In addition, SEM of Listeria monocytogenes suggested that it antimicrobial component would perturb the functions of microbial cell membranes synergistically. In the feeding experiment the formaldehyde content in the serum of formalin-fed and PRLE-treated me decreased remarkably due to the lysis of formaldehyde and the rate of hemoglobin biosynthesis was recovered to the orignal state within a short breeding time.

  • Melaleuca alternifolia contains terpineol-4, cineol, sesquiterpenes etc., and has a germicidal effect and skin moisturizing effect. It also has the characteristics of relieving acne inflammation, treating dandruff, relieving pain, and relieving depression. In this study, an antimicrobial substance extracted from tea tree using an organic solvent (methanol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate) and hydrothermal extraction method. And confirmed the antimicrobial activity of each extract. In order to verify the antimicrobial activity, nine pathogenic bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Vibrio parahaemolyticus) were used. The antimicrobial activity of each extracts were confirmed by the commonly used disc diffusion method. The results showed that the fraction extracts of ethyl acetate and methanol had antimicrobial effects against V. parahaemolyticus and S. aureus. Using these results, we confirmed the antimicrobial activity of each fraction extracts and hot water extracts against V. parahaemolyticus. After the treat of samples, we confirmed at over 99.9 % of antimicrobial activity. In case of antifungal activities, we confirmed of preservation effect during over 45 hours. Based on the results of this research, further studies will be conducted to confirm the possibility of development as a new antimicrobial agent.

  • A new series of ligands N-[(benzoylamino)-thioxomethyl]-amino acid (HL) were synthesized by reaction of benzoylisothiocyanate with various amino acids namely aspartic acid [BATA] (1), glutamic acid [BATG] (2), methionine [BATM] (3), leucine [BATL] (4), and tryptophan [BATT] (5). The ligands were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectra. Some transition metal complexes ($ML_2$) for these ligands (6-8) were prepared; [M=Cu(II), Co(II), or Ni(II)], and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and $^1H$ NMR spectra. Antibacterial study showed that all the ligands have no antibacterial activity, whereas ($ML_2$) complexes; [M = Cu(II), Co(II), or Ni(II)] have antibacterial activity towards (Gram -ive) Escherichia (NCTC5933) and (Gram +ive) Staphylococcus (NCTC6571) and have no toxicity on (BALB/C) Albino mice.
