A Study of Range Resolving Performance for Airborne Radar Based on Signal Processing and Tracking Algorithm (신호처리 및 추적 알고리즘을 고려한 항공기탑재 레이다 거리 분해 성능 검증)

  • Range resolution is the ability to distinguish different targets placed in same angular direction but at different distances from the radar. Normally, Range resolution requirement is defined as the width of transmitting pulse. The width of transmitting pulse does not mean the ability to distinguish two different targets. Range resolution performance to detect and track targets separately depends on the signal processing and tracking algorithm not only the width of transmitting pulse. This paper analyzes the processing steps in algorithms to affect the range resolution performance and verifies the results by roof-lab ground test using beacon signal. As a result, to track targets with the same angular position separately, it is desirable to have larger range difference than plot-track association test gate.

  • The small tracking radar targets the target in a real-time, fast-moving, fast-moving target against aircraft with a large RCS that is maneuvering at low speed and a small RCS aircraft maneuvering at high speed (fighters, drones, helicopters, etc.) It is a pulsed radar that detects and tracks.   • In this paper, the design method and algorithms of the signal processor for a multipurpose radar system are analyzed. The signal processor, operating at the two modes-collision avoidance mode and weather mode, has 4 steps of ADC, NCI, STC, CFAR. Several algorithms of NCI and CFAR are analyzed and the optimal design is proposed to the system. CVI and CMLD algorithm have good performance in decreasing the false alarm rate and increasing detection probability, Regarding processor computational capacity, K=12 for CVI, M=16~20, Ko=M-4 for CMLD is suggested. CVI processing needs much time, two or more processors need to be allocated to CVI. So, for the system with four processors, two processors should be allocated to VID of NCI with ADC input and CFAR with STC, and two processors are should be allocated to CVI.

  • NCTR(Non-Cooperative Target Recognition) refers to the function of radar to identify target on its own without support from other systems such as ELINT(ELectronic INTelligence). ISAR(Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) image is one of the representative methods of NCTR, but it is difficult to automatically classify the target without an identification database due to the significant changes in the image depending on the target's maneuver and location. In this study, we discuss how to build an identification database using simulation and deep-learning technique even when actual images are insufficient. To simulate ISAR images changing with various radar operating environment, A model that generates and learns images through the process named 'Perfect scattering image,' 'Lost scattering image' and 'JEM noise added image' is proposed. And the learning outcomes of this model show that not only simulation images of similar shapes but also actual ISAR images that were first entered can be classified.

  • 군사장비에 대한 EMI문제는 2차 세계대전 이후 전자장비에 대한 의존도가 높아짐에 따라 크게 변화하였다. 2차 세계대전 초기에는 주로 항공기의 엔진점화장치에서 발생되는 3~30MHz 대역의 무선주 파수간섭(RFI)이 통신장비에 문제가 되었으며 간섭현상도 그다지 심각하지 않았다. 그러나 전자공학의 급 속한 발전에 따라 고성능 통신장비 및 레이다가 등장하였으며 각종 전자장비도 고출력화, 고밀도화됨에 따 라 장비자체에서 방사되는 전자파잡음의 세기가 증가하게 되었다. 이에 반해 체계(System)탑재 전자장비 들이 점차 마이크로프로세서화 됨에 따라 제어신호의 수준은 더 낮아져서 전자파간섭에 더욱 취약하게 되 었다. 또한 현대의 전장(Battle Field)은 수많은 전기/전자장비가 동시에 운용됨에 따라 발생되는 전자파로 인해 더욱 복잡한 전자파환경이 형성된다.

Development of Deburring System for Aircraft Components (Membrane 제거를 위한 전용 시스템 개발)

  • This paper is on the development of a system for removing membranes which is designed exclusively for aircraft components. Membrane removal solution is a most critical issue in aerospace industries since a method of manufacturing the components tends to be changed from fabrication of many parts to cutting into one body. The cutting method inevitably produces a huge amount of chips and then membranes remain in the body. The membrane removal process, as a result, becomes an important issue since it is directly related to productivity. We tried to develop a new machine which will replace the conventional method that uses a handy tool. The machine has been designed for a cutting tool set to follow the unique shape of the slot in the body by a cam follower and cut the membrane automatically. The design has been checked by structural analysis: stress and vibration analysis. A prototype test has been finished. This paper summarizes a series of development process of the deburring machine and some design issues are discussed.

  • This paper is concerned with an interrogator capable of constructing a interrogation scenario for acquiring active airspace to the intruding aircraft into the surveillance area of the MLAT system. In the MLAT system, the interrogator is an important device used to carry out the interrogation towards the aircraft within the surveillance airspace in the appropriate surveillance scenario. Unlike a conventional SSR's interrogation methods that interrogate for airplanes flying within a certain range, the MLAT system requires a interrogation system that can actively interrogate from remote to near range, or according to operational scenarios, for aircraft intruding into the surveillance range. The interrogator implemented in this paper can be used for interrogating and monitoring aircraft within each surveillance airspace using whisper-shout algorithm according to varying output power based on the actual operation distance.

  • This paper presents a method to overcome the problem of increasing elevation estimation error when estimating elevation in a multipath situation with radar. A multipath situation means that radar reception signals reflected from the same target come from multiple paths. In non-multipath, the monopulse method is accurate. For the opposite case, the least square error method is accurate. In multipath situation and when the elevation angle is very low, a singular occurs where the least square error estimate diverges. This singular was identified based on the propagation factor, and monopulse and least square error estimation methods were selectively used. As a result, we succeeded in increasing the accuracy of elevation estimation. MATLAB simulations were performed to verify the method proposed in this paper.

Target Recognition Method of DTV-Based Passive Radar Using Multi-Channel Combining Method (다중 채널 융합 기법을 이용한 DTV 기반 수동형 레이다의 표적 인식 방법)

  • In this paper, we proposed airborne target recognition using multi-channel combining method in DTV-based passive radar. By combining multi-channel signals, we obtained the HRRP with sufficient range resolution. HRRP was obtained by AR method or zero-padding. From the obtained HRRP, we extracted scattering centers by CLEAN algorithm using the gradient descent. We extracted feature vectors and performed target recognition after training neural network using the extracted feature vectors. To verify performance of proposed methods, we assumed frequency bands of three broadcasting transmitters operated in Korea(Mt. Gwan-ak, Mt. Yong-moon, Kyeon-wol-ak) and used full scale 3D CAD model of four targets. Also we compared the target recognition performance of the proposed method with that of using only single-channel of three broadcasting transmitters. As a result, proposed methods showed better performance than using only single-channel at three broadcasting transmitters.

  • If two signals with the same single-tone frequency and differing phases impinge simultaneously on an antenna at slightly differing angles, then a large error in the angle estimation might occur if the phase difference is either $0^{\circ}$ or $180^{\circ}$. This phenomenon might arise with an airborne fire-control radar, which has a relatively small bandwidth, for a low-flying target over the sea or terrain surface. In this paper, we show that the $Cram{\acute{e}}r$-Rao lower bound for such a target can be significantly lowered with the use of two frequencies.
