Performance Evaluation and Improvement of Operational Aviation Turbulence Prediction Model for Middle- and Upper- Levels (중·상층 항공난류 예측모델의 성능 평가와 개선)

  • Aviation turbulence, caused by atmospheric eddies, is a disruptive phenomenon that leads to abrupt aircraft movements during flight. To minimize the damages caused by such aviation turbulence, the Aviation Meteorological Office provides turbulence information through the Korea aviation Turbulence Guidance (KTG) and the Global-Korean aviation Turbulence Guidance (GKTG). In this study, we evaluated the performance of the KTG and GKTG models by comparing the in-situ EDR observation data and the generated aviation turbulence prediction data collected from the mid-level Korean Peninsula region from January 2019 to December 2021. Through objective validation, we confirmed the level of prediction performance and proposed improvement measures based on it. As a result of the improvements, the KTG model showed minimal difference in performance before and after the changes, while the GKTG model exhibited an increase of TSS after the improvements.

  • In support of the National ATM Reformation and Enhancement Plan (NARAE), a trajectory-based aviation weather service is under development through the NARAE-Weather project. Specifically, weather data presented in a standardized digital format facilitates the seamless integration of digital weather data with air traffic information. Thus, this paper introduces an approach that entails structuring numerical model data to integrate aviation weather information and flight trajectory data. The extraction results using structurally transformed data showed superior performance compared to the results extracted from the original data in terms of performance, and this research is poised to enhance the safety and efficiency of airline operations.

  • 정지궤도 상에서 기상 관측 임무를 수행하고 있는 주요 기상위성의 관측 데이터의 전송 및 분배 시스템의 구성 현황 및 주요 전송 파라미터를 분석하고 현재 개발되고 있는 통신해양기상위성의 관측 데이터 전송 시스템 구성 및 채널별 주요 전송 파라미터를 제시한다. 제한된 기상 주파수 전송 대역에 대해 갈수록 고성능화 되어가는 기상 센서에 따른 대용량 기상관측 데이터 전송 및 분배를 위한 전송 방법 및 주파수 대역의 변경, 지상망 및 상업용 위성 통신망의 활용방안을 살펴본다.

  • 통신해양기상위성은 기상관측, 해양관측 및 통신방송의 3가지 임무를 수행하는 정지궤도 복합임무 위성이다. 위성본체는 기존의 화성탐사선(Mars Express) 위성의 구조를 확장하여 새로 개발한 구조체에 기존의 E3000 통신위성 버스에 사용하였던 전기전자 부품 및 추진계를 사용한다. 3축제어 위성으로서 태양전지판은 한 쪽에만 부착되어 있으며, 반대쪽에는 종래의 기상위성이 모멘트 균형을 위하여 갖고 있었던 솔라세일(solar sail)을 갖고 있지 않다. 기상탑재체는 미국의 아이티티(ITT)가 제작 공급하고, 해양탑재체는 이에이디에스 아스트리움(EADS Astrium)사와 항공우주연구원이 공동으로 개발하며, 통신 탑재체는 전자통신연구원에서 개발한다. 지상국은 항공우주연구원이, 관제시스템은 전자통신연구원이 개발을 담당하고 있다. 개발의 전 과정이 해외협력 개발로 이루어진다. 설계는 프랑스의 뚤르즈 소재 이에이디에스 아스트리움(EADS Astrium)사에서 한국 기술진의 참여 하에 이루어지며, 조립 및 시험은 항공우주연구원의 시설을 이용하여 한국에서 이루어진다. 발사준비도 공동으로 수행하고, 발사 후 전이궤도운영은 아스트리움사의 지상국을 사용하여 수행하여 목표궤도에 진입시킨 후 항공우주연구원의 지상국에서 궤도 내 시험(in-orbit-test)를 완료한 후 위성을 인도 받는다.

  • Student pilots receiving flight education are inexperienced in piloting and situation judgment skills and are greatly affected by various factors such as psychological, physical, and environmental factors. In particular, one of the most influential factors in the flight education of student pilots is the weather conditions. Unlike large aircraft used in the air transportation business, small aircraft used for flight education have a great impact on education, such as flight restrictions depending on weather conditions, psychological pressure in severe weather, and deterioration of student skills. Therefore, in this study, the meteorological characteristics of meteorological factors that have a great influence on small aircraft were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, an efficient and safe training operation method was suggested to a professional pilot aviation training organization through the adjustment of the training period for the season, the increase in aircraft operation rate, and a safe solo flight plan considering the weather.

  • The Prime objectives of this study are to identify and analyze possible solutions and select a solution for the specification and operation plan of the meteorological purpose aircraft in Korea. Infrastructure like meteorological purpose aircraft and aircraft operating systems should be set up and their efficient plan must be established to improve meteorological technic in Korea. As a result of the study, we have found that the turboprop engine powered aircraft is the most suitable to initial model for the meteorological purpose aircraft. It was found that the indirect operation method might be the best solution, also. The results of this study may be useful to make decision for selecting specification and operation of the meteorological purpose aircraft.

  • Korean aviation Turbulenc Guidance (KTG) system is developed using the operational unified model (UM) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and pilot reports (PIREPs) over East Asia. The KTG system comprised of twenty turbulence diagnostics that represent various turbulence potentials and have the best forecasting skills, which are combined into a single ensemble-averaged index, namely KTG, at upper-(above FL250) and mid-(below FL250) levels. It is found that the overall performance of the KTG is higher than those produced from the one single best index, and satisfies the minimum criteria (80% accuracy) that the system is operationally useful in aviation industry.

Analysis of low level cloud prediction in the KMA Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System(LDAPS) (기상청 국지예보모델의 저고도 구름 예측 분석)

  • Clouds are an important factor in aircraft flight. In particular, a significant impact on small aircraft flying at low altitude. Therefore, we have verified and characterized the low level cloud prediction data of the Unified Model(UM) - based Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System(LDAPS) operated by KMA in order to develop cloud forecasting service and contents important for safety of low-altitude aircraft flight. As a result of the low level cloud test for seven airports in Korea, a high correlation coefficient of 0.4 ~ 0.7 was obtained for 0-36 leading time. Also, we found that the prediction performance does not decrease as the lead time increases. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that model-based forecasting data for low-altitude aviation meteorology services can be produced.
