  • We have experimentally demonstrated sum-frequency generation (SFG) in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal, using a mode-locked picosecond-pulsed fiber laser and a continuous-wave (CW) diode laser with a narrow linewidth. The mode-locked fiber laser had a center wavelength of 1560.7 nm and a spectral width of 1.1 nm, and the CW diode laser had a center wavelength of 1551.0 nm and a spectral width of 6 MHz. To effectively realize SFG, both of the spatial modes of the two lasers were made to overlap in the PPLN crystal by using a single-mode optical fiber. The pulse-mode SFG with pulsed- and CW-mode lasers was successfully observed in the spectral and time domains. These results are expected to be applicable in various ways, such as optical frequency measurement and high-resolution laser spectroscopy studies using optical frequency combs.

  • In tire presence of incident waves with different frequencies, there are second order sum and difference frequency wave exciting forces due to the nonlinearity of tire incident waves. Although the magnitude of these nonlinear wave forces are small, they act on TLPs at sum and difference frequencies away from those of the incident waves. So, the second order sum and difference frequency waveexciting forces occurring close to tire natural frequencies of TLPs often give greater contributions to high and law frequency resonant responses. Nonlinear motion responses and tension variations in the time domain are analyzed by solving the motion equations with nonlinear wave exciting forces using tire numerical analysismethod. The numerical results of time domain analysis for the nonlinear wave exciting forces on the ISSC TLP in regular waves are compared with the numerical and experimental ones of frequency domain analysis. The results of this comparison confirmed tire validity of the proposed approach.

  • The wavelength converter is considered to be a key element of future dense WDM optical networks. It enables wavelength reuse and resolves contention problem. Moreover, the tunability of the wavelength converter enhance the flexibility of network systems by facilitating reconfigurable dynamic wavelength routing. In order to achieve optically tunable wavelength conversion, we recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated wavelength conversion and tuning based on cascaded sum and difference frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN channel waveguide. • In the presence of incident waves with different frequencies, the second order sum and difference frequency waves due to the nonlinearity of the incident waves come into existence. Although the magnitudes of the forces produced on a Tension Leg Platform(TLP) by these nonlinear waves are small, they act on the TLP at sum and difference frequencies away from those of the incident waves. So, the second order sum and difference frequency wave loads produced close to the natural frequencies of TLPs often give greater contributions to high and low frequency resonant responses. The second order wave exciting forces and moments have been obtained by the method based on direct integration of pressure acting on the submerged surface of a TLP. The components of the second order forces which depend on first order quantities have been evaluated using the three dimensional source distribution method. The numerical results of time domain analysis for the nonlinear wave exciting forces in regular waves are compared with the numerical ones of frequency domain analysis. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.

  • This study was aimed to evaluate the characteristics of impact sound of golf driver according to impact points of its face. In order to get the consistent impact sounds, the apparatus for free golf ball drop was prepared and used. Timed amplitude patterns and maximum spectral peaks of the impact sounds were variant according to the impact points of driver face. As an alternative method of impact sound analysis, cumulative sum of spectral power (cumsum) was used to distinguish between impact sounds according to the impact positions. From the comparison of frequencies representing 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% of cumsum of impact sound, 40% cumsum frequency of the center of driver face was lower than that of the toe and the heel. This finding suggests that the impact sound from the center of driver face has higher spectral power of low frequency component than that of the toe and heel.

• Sum frequency generation was utilized to obtain a yellow laser with the wavelength of 578.4 nm for a probe laser of an Yb lattice clock. The output of an Nd:YAG laser with wavelength of 1319 nm and that of an Yb-fiber laser with wavelength of 1030 nm were passed through a waveguided periodically-poled lithium niobate (WG-PPLN) for sum frequency generation. It is required that the probe laser has a linewidth of the order of 1 Hz to fully resolve the Yb lattice clock transition. Thus, the linewidth of the probe laser was reduced by stabilizing the frequency to a super-cavity. This was made of ULE with a low thermal expansion coefficient, and was mounted on an active vibration-isolation table at the optimal point for the reduced sensitivity to vibration. Also, this was installed in a vacuum chamber, and the temperature was stabilized to 1 mK level. This system was installed in an acoustic enclosure to block acoustic noise. The finesse of the super-cavity was measured to be 380 000 from the photon life time of the cavity.
