Hydrographic Observations around Korean Peninsula: Past, Present and Future (한반도 주변의 해양관측:과거, 현재, 미래)

  • 한반도 주변의 정규적인 해양관측 효시는 1910년대로부터 시작된다. 1915년 6월부 터 원산, 부산 등 12개 항구의 중앙부에서 10일 간격으로 해양관측이 시작되었으며, 1916년 7월부터는 거문도 해야 어청도 등 10개 등대관측소에서 연안정지관측을 역일로 시작했고, 1917년 5월부터 정선해양관측이 이루어 졌는데 이들은 총독부 수산과에서 수산시험조사사업의 일환으로 수행되었고 1921년부터 총독부수산 시험장에서 이들을 더욱 발전다. 1930년대에는 정선해양관측이 매월 초순 각 도별로 수항되어 가장 훌륭 한 관측결과가 생산되었다. 1961년부터는 항구관측을 폐지하고 연안정지관측과 정선해 양관측만 이루어 지고 있으며 해양조사선을 20여개로 수정하여 2개월마다 조사에 임하 고 있다. 이들은 기본적으로 해양생물자원의 경제적 획득에 목적을 두고 있으나 자료 를 널리 공개하여 전세계의 어느 해양연구자들도 이용할 수 있도록 하고 있다. 1960년 부터는 우리 나라 연안의 조석관측도 연속적으로 수행되고 있다. 1990년 현재 21개 정 선해양관측자료와 42개의 연안정지관측자료, 매일의 표면수온분포도 21개의 평균해면 자료가 공개적으로 이용가능하다. 앞으로 유명한 연구소일수록 해양관측자료를 공개하 여 공동이용할 수 있어야 하며 해양관측의 활성화를 위해 첫째 해양관측기구를 소모품 으로 취급할 것이 요구되고, 둘째 관측선 요원의 정당한 처우가 이루어져야 하며, 셋 째 세계적인 해양조사 사업은 국가기관에서 더욱 성실히 수행될 수 있도록 여건을 조 성할 필요가 있다. 과거에는 어업활동을 위해 해양조사가 현재에는 기후변동연구에 중 요한 자료로도 이용되고 있으므로 우리는 우리주변의 해양관측을 미래학문의 기초자료 로 끊임없이 수행해야 할 중차대한 임무를 지니고 있다.는 대체로 Weddell Sea쪽에서 남동쪽으로 가면서 증가하며, 영 양염 농도가 낮은 얼음 녹은 물의 유입이 얼룩소 a의 농도를 감소시키는 것으로 사료 된다.되어, 경기만에서 출현하는 식물플랑크톤이 서해 중동부 연안수역에서 출현하는 식물 플랑크톤보다 상대적으로 낮은 광에 적응되어 있었다. the most important in the global optimum analysis because small variation of it results in the large change of the objective function, the sum of squares of deviations of the observed and computed groundwater levels. 본 논문에서는 가파른 산사면에서 산사태의 발생을 예측하기 위한 수문학적 인 지하수 흐름 모델을 개발하였다. 이 모델은 물리적인 개념에 기본하였으며, Lumped-parameter를 이용하였다. 개발된 지하수 흐름 모델은 두 모델을 조합하여 구성되어 있으며, 비포화대 흐름을 위해서는 수정된 abcd 모델을, 포화대 흐름에 대해서는 시간 지체 효과를 고려할 수 있는 선형 저수지 모델을 이용하였다. 지하수 흐름 모델은 토층의 두께, 산사면의 경사각, 포화투수계수, 잠재 증발산 량과 같은 불확실한 상수들과 a, b, c, 그리고 K와 같은 자유모델변수들을 가진다. 자유모델변수들은 유입-유출 자료들로부터 평가할 수 있으며, 이를 위해서 본 논문에서는 Gauss-Newton 방법을 이용한 Bard 알고리즘을 사용하였다. 서울 구로구 시흥동 산사태 발생 지역의 산사면에 대하여 개발된 모델을 적용하여 예제 해석을 수행함으로써, 지하수 흐름 모델이 산사태 발생 예측을 위하여 이용할 수 있음을 입증하였다.

Novel Mutation and Genetic Variation of the KIT Gene in Korean Wild Boars(Sus scrofa coreanus) (한반도 멧돼지 KIT 유전자의 유전적 변이와 신규 돌연변이)

  • KIT encodes a mast/stem cell growth factor receptor and is known as a possible candidate gene responsible for dominant white coat color in mammals. To investigate the genetic variation of KIT gene in Korean wild boars(Sus scrofa coreanus), we carried out PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing for three exons(exons 17, 19, and 20) and intron 19 of the KIT gene in Korean wild boars. PCR-RFLP results using NlaⅢ restriction enzyme in the breakpoint region between exon 17 and intron 17 and AciⅠ restriction enzyme in exon 19 indicate that Korean wild boars did not have previously identified white coat color related splicing mutation and missense mutation, respectively. These results also indicate matings between Korean wild boars could not give white coat color offsprings. We also found new SNPs in exons 19(C2661T) and 20(A2760G). Of these, the SNP in exon 20 is a missense mutation which might induce the change of amino acid iso-leucine to valine. However, no relationship was identified with this missense mutation and coat color. In this study, breed specific new SNPs were identified in exons 19, 20 and intron 19 and these results will give important information for genetic variation of porcine KIT gene.

Vegetation Disturbance of Korea during the Pre-Chosun Dynasty Period (조선시대 이전의 식생 간섭사)

  • Vegetation disturbance history of the Korean Peninsula from the Palaeolithic Age to the Koryo Dynasty (1392) has reconstructed by the use of various data sources. Active vegetation disturbance, which has begun during the Neolithic Age, seems to be more widespread on lowland and coastal areas in the early stages, but later expanded into inland areas. The ploughing of a field and the selective cutting of certain trees, such as oak trees, nettle trees and pine trees are noticeable, and eventually caused deforestation during the Bronze Age. The use of iron tools of the Iron Age has enabled the forest clearing to develope the dry fields. During the Three Kingdoms period (BC 57∼AD 918) extensive deforestation has maintained for the development of cultivated fields, as well as other activities, such as timber, lumbering, production of iron farm implement, ploughing by cattle. The encouragement of disafforestation on mountain slope and creation of terraced field during the Koryo Dynasty (918∼1392) has caused the deforestation over the country, along with the consumption of large amount of wood and timber for fire-wood, ship-building, mining, xylography and so on.

A Regional Study on the Korean Toilet Culture (韓國 통시(뒷간) 文化의 地域的 硏究)

  • According to cultural diffusion route, the Korean toilet culture could be classified as southern culture and northern culture, In Cheju Island the toilet is located on the stone fence of swine. The native people of Cheju Island name it as TONGSHI. And Southern culture could be diffused from South Sea to Cheju Island by the sea current. Around Mt.Chiri area, the greater part of traditional toilets are on the upper floor in the barn, and pigs are on the bottom floor under the toilet. This type of toilet would be the northern culture of the toilet, which would be diffused from continent of Asia to Korean Peninsula. Residents of these areas also name this toilet as TONGSHI. The Korean word "TONGSHI" means a toilet on the pig fence. Traditional toilet culture in Korea differs from regions and residents. We can find dry-closets in Seon-am Temple and Song-kawng Temple. This high floor dry-closet type would be effected by Buddhism. In the reclaimed land and islands of west sea we could not find the old traditional toilets.l toilets.

Downscaling GPM Precipitation Using Finer-scale MODIS Based Optical Image in Korean Peninsula (MODIS 광학 영상 자료를 통한 한반도 GPM 강우 자료의 상세화 기법)

  • Precipitation is closely related to various hydrometeorological phenomena, such as runoff and evapotranspiration. In Korean Peninsula, observing rainfall intensity using weather radar and rain gauge network is dominating due to their accurate, intuitive and precise detecting power. However,since these methods are not suitable at ungauged regions, rainfall detection using satellite is required. Satellite-based rainfall data has coarse spatial resolution (10 km, 25 km), and has a limited range of usage due to its reliability of data. The aim of this study is to obtain finer scale precipitation. Especially, to make the applicability of satellite higher at ungauged regions, 10 km satellite-based rainfall data was downscaled to 1 km data using MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) based cloud property. Downscaled precipitation was verified in urban region, which has complex topographical and environmental characteristics. Correlation coefficient was similar in summer (+0), decreased in spring (-0.08) and autumn (-0.01), and increased in winter (+0.04) season compared to Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) based precipitation. Downscaling without calibration using in situ data could be useful in areas where rain gauge system is not sufficient or ground observations are rarely available.

Lead Isotope Analysis of Bronze Artefacts Excavated from Inyongsaji Site (납동위원소비 분석을 활용한 인용사지 출토 청동기의 원료 산지 연구)

  • Chemical and Pb isotope analysis were performed in order to determine the origin of bronze artefacts excavated from the Inyongsaji site in South Korea. The result of ICP-MS shows that they are tin bronzes in which lead was not intentionally added during production. Pb isotope data analyzed by TIMS are plotted in the southern region of Korea and China of the distribution map drawn by Mabuchi(1985). On the other hand, the identical isotope data are plotted in the Taebaek basin and the Olcheon metamorphic belt correspondent to zone2 and zone3 respectively. It is believed that the isotope data on the tin bronzes which have very low lead content can be used to trace the origin of copper ore rather than those of either lead or tin ore. Pb istope analysis allows diverse interpretation as it can be applied to any object containing trace amounts of lead. In addition, accumulation of isotope data as well as further studies will improve reliability of the provenance studies.

Plant Phenology of Threatened species for Climate change in Sub-alpine zone of Korea - Especially on the Summit Area of Mt. Deogyusan - (한반도 아고산지대내 기후변화 취약식물종의 식물계절성 변화 연구 - 덕유산 정상 지역을 중심으로 -)

  • We investigated the plant phenology on the threatened species for climate change in the summit area of Mt. Deogyusan which is a representative sub-alpine zone in Korea. We had performed the monitoring survey of plant phenology on 38 species including 20 trees and 18 herbs from May 2009 to November 2010. The investigated phenological charateristics were five dates for leafing, flowering, floral abscission, autumn leaf colors and leaf abscission on each plant species in sub-alpine region. The climate data were measured from November 2009 to December 2010. The range of temperature was from 30.4 to -$20.3^{\circ}C$ at Hyangjeokbong to Jungbong region, and the relative humidity was 100% to 3.4%. The leafing dates in 2010 were similar to 2009 or were 6-20 days delayed in most of the investigated species except Veratrum oxysepalum and Sanguisorba hakusanensis which showed 8 days earlier leafing dates in 2010. The biggest difference among phenological characters was found in flowering dates. The flowering dates of early Spring blooming species such as Heloniopsis koreana, Rhododendron yedoense for. poukhanense and Viola orientalis showed 13-20 days earlier in 2010, and the several summer flowering species as Viburnum opulus var. calvescens, Smilacina japonica and Bupleurum longeradiatum showed 6-10 days delay in 2010. The dates for floral abscission and autumn leaf colors in 2010 were delayed about 10-18 days, and leaf abscission dates were similar to 2009. The effects of climate change on the phenology for the threatened species in sub-alpine zones of Korea are occuring especially on flowering, floral abscission and autumn leaf colors.

Distribution, vegetation characteristics and assessment of the conservation status of a rare and endemic plant, Coreanomecon hylomeconoides Nakai (희귀·특산식물 매미꽃의 분포와 자생지 식생특성 및 보전 지위 평가)

  • The distribution, vegetation characteristics and an assessment of the conservation status of the Korea endemic species Coreanomecon hylomeconoides Nakai were investigated to collect biological basic data to formulate a conservation strategy. According to the distribution map of C. hylomeconoides based on the literature, specimen information, and local field surveys, natural populations of C. hylomeconoides are intensively distributed in the Southern regions of the peninsula, around Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanan-do. C. hylomeconoides was distributed in the middle and low slope adjacent to a valley. The altitude ranged from 227 m to 744 m, with inclinations of $5-10^{\circ}$. As a result of a vegetation survey within natural populations, a total of 238 taxa were identified from 29 quadrates in 8 natural populations. The importance value of C. hylomeconoides is 25.34% based on the coverage and frequency of the herbaceous layer with in the populations. The species diversity of the occurrence of the species in 8 natural populations was 1.52, while the averages of species evenness and the dominance values were calculated to be 0.83 and 0.17, respectively. As a result of assessing the conservation status through IUCN Red List criteria, C. hylomeconoides was evaluated as Near Threatened (NT). Conservation strategies are also discussed for the sustainable conservation of C. hylomeconoides.

Flora of Dongwol Valley in Mt. Gyeryongsan, National Park (계룡산국립공원 동월계곡일원의 식물상 조사연구)

  • The vascular plants collected from Dongwol Valley in Mt. Gyeryongsan, national park were composed of all 248 taxa including cultivated species, and classified into 1 phylum, 4 classes, 3 subclasses, 34 orders, 84 families, 178 species, 33 varieties and 4 forms. As compared the flora of the commonly distributing species of this region with those of the southern part, the middle part, the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, Jeju-do Island and Ulreung-do Island, the proportion of them were $90.3\%,\;98.0\%,\;79.0\%,\;73.8\%$ and $62.1\%$, respectively. One taxon of the plants distributed only in the southern part, 3 taxa of those in the middle part, 5 taxa of those in the middle-northern part and 23 taxa of those in the middle-southern part were found in this Valley. Natural resource plants were categorized into edible 118 taxa, medicinal 78 taxa, industrial 46 taxa, ornamental 39 taxa, timber 14 taxa and fiber 9 taxa. Four taxa of the Korean endemic plants are distributed in Dongwol Valley. The vegetation of the valley is Quercus and Rhododendron mixed forest, and it belongs to the boundary between the middle part and the southern part in the floral zone of the Korean Peninsula.

3-D Crustal Velocity Tomography in the Central Korean Peninsula (한반도 중부지역의 3차원 속도 모델 토모그래피 연구)

  • A new technique of simultaneons inversion for 3-D seismic velocity structure by using direct, reflected, and refracted waves is applied to the center of the Korean Peninsula including Pyongnam Basin, Kyonggi Massif, Okchon Fold Zone, Taebaeksan Fold Zone, Ryongnam Massif and Kyongsang Basin. Pg, Sg, PmP, SmS, Pn, and Sn arrival times of 32 events with 404 seismic rays are inverted for locations and crustal structure. 5 ($1^{\circ}$ along the latitude)${\times}6$ ($0.5^{\circ}$ along the longitude) ${\times}8$ block (4 km each layer) model was inverted. 3-D seismic crustal velocity tomography including eight sections from the surface to the Moho, eight profiles along latitude and longitude and the Moho depth distribution was determined. The results are as follows: (1) the average velocity and thickness of sediment are 5.15 km/sec and 3-4 km, and the velocity of basement is 6.12 km/sec. (2) the velocities fluctuate strongly in the upper crust, and the velocity distribution of the lower crust under Conrad appears basically horizontal. (3) the average depth of Moho is 29.8 km and velocity is 7.97 km/sec. (4) from the sedimentary depth and velocity, basement thickness and velocity, form of the upper crust, the Moho depth and form of the remarkable crustal velocity differences among Pyongnam Basin, Kyonggi Massif, Okchon Zone, Ryongnam Massif and Kyongsang Basin can be found. (5) The different crustal features of ocean and continent crust are obvious. (6) Some deep index of the Chugaryong Rift Zone can be located from the cross section profiles. (7) We note that there are big anisotropy bodies near north of Seoul and Hongsung in the upper crust, implying that they may be related to the Chugaryong Rift Zone and deep fault systems.
