  • Three legume fossils collected from the Miocene Duho Formation of Yeonil Group in the northern Pohang Beach, Gyeongsangbug-do, Korea were described as Albizia miokalkora Hu and Chaney. This species has only appearing in the Miocene floras of Korea, China and Japan until present. It has wide distribution from warm temperate to subtropical-tropical regions but, the diversity of the species of Albizia is not so high. It is considered that the fossil Albizia miokalkora Hu and Chaney might have adapted to the warm climate such as warm temperate climate and subtropical to tropical climate.

  • Plaintive Cuckoo (Cacomantis merulinus) is a small cuckoo species in Family Cuculidae that is mainly distributed in the Oriental Region. On May 1. 2016, one juvenile Plaintive Cuckoo was found at Somaemuldo Island, Korea ($34^{\circ}37^{\prime}38.73^{{\prime}{\prime}}N$ $128^{\circ}33^{\prime}0.44^{{\prime}{\prime}}E$). The bird was identified as C. merulinus by its morphological traits, especially primary projection, the shape of bars on tertials, and pale supercilium. These characteristics were distinctive from other similar small cuckoos in genus Cacomantis and Cuculus, during the field observation and examination of photographs. This record is the first of this species in Korea, and the northernmost record of this species.

  • The 'Imjin System' (or Rimjin System) was established in 1962 as a new stratigraphic unit separated from the Upper Paleozoic Pyeongan System based on the discovery of brachiopods and echinoderms of possible Devonian age. Subsequent discoveries of the Middle Devonian charophytes confirmed the Devonian age of the system. The Imjin System is distributed in the Imjingang Belt between the Pyongnam Basin and the Gyeonggi Massif, spans from the eastern areas including Cholwon-gun of the Gangwon Province, Gumchon-gun, Phanmun-gun, and Tosan-gun of the Hwanghaebuk Province, to the western areas of Gangryong-gun and Ongjin-gun of the Hwanghaenam Province, and includes the Yeoncheon Group (metamorphic complex) to the south. Unlike the lower Paleozoic strata in the Pyongnam Basin which solely produce marine invertebrate fossils, the Imjin System yields diverse non-marine plant and algal fossils. Brachiopods of the system are similar to those from the Devonian of the South China Block and include taxa endemic to the platform, implying a close paleogeographic affinity to the South China Block. The Imjin System is generally considered as of Middle to Late Devonian in age, although there have been suggestions that the system is of the Middle Devonian to Carboniferous in age. North Korean workers postulated that the Imjin System was deposited in the current geographic position, where the "Imjin Sea" (an extension of the South China Platform) was located during the Devonian. The Imjin System displays strong local variations in stratigraphy and its thickness. It has recently been reported that the strata are repeated and overturned by thrust faults in many exposures. The Yeoncheon Group a southward extension of the Imjin System, also experienced intense tight folding and contractional deformation. Northward decrease in metamorphic grade within the system suggests that the northern part of the Gyeonggi Massif and the Imjingang Belt are probably an extension of the Dabie-Sulu Belt between the South China and Sino-Korean blocks, and the Imjin System is an remnant of accretion resulted from the collision between the two blocks. In order to understand tectonic evolution and Paleozoic paleogeography of eastern Asia, further studies on stratigraphic, sedimentologic and tectonic evolution of the Imjin System involving scientists from the two Koreas are urgently needed.

  • We applied gemological analytical approaches on Aquamarine from the Gilgit-Baltistan of Northern Areas, Pakistan. The standard gemological testing indicates that they are consistent with general characteristics of natural aquamarines. We have identified the inclusions of Tantalite-Mn by Raman analysis. It indicates that they occurs in association with the veins of Be-rich coarse pegmatite. And the results of chemical analyses, infrared absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy indicate that $H_2O$ molecules in channel mostly exist in Type-I and a little Type-II with low alkali ion. The comparison of relative peak intensity of FT-IR analysis can be used for prediction of $Na_2O$ content within not only emerald but also aquamarine.

  • In 2008, multiple episodes of large-scale transport of natural airborne particles and anthropogenically affected particles from different sources in the East Asian continent were identified in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite RGB-composite images and the mass concentrations of ground level particulate matters. To analyze the aerosol size distribution during the large-scale transport of atmospheric aerosols, both aerosol optical depth (AOD; proportional to the aerosol total loading in the vertical column) and fine aerosol weighting (FW; fractional contribution of fine aerosol to the total AOD) of Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol products were used over the East Asian region. The six episodes of massive natural airborne particles were observed at Cheongwon, originating from sandstorms in northern China, Mongolia and the loess plateau of China. The $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ stood at 70% and 16% of the total mass concentration of TSP, respectively. However, the mass concentration of $PM_{2.5}$ among TSP increased as high as 23% in the episode in which they were flowing in by way f the industrial area in east China. In the other five episodes of anthropogenically affected particles that flowed into the Korean Peninsula from east China, the mass concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ among TSP reached 82% and 65%, respectively. The average AOD for the large-scale transport of anthropogenically affected particle episodes in the East Asian region was measured at $0.42{\pm}0.17$ compared with AOD ($0.36{\pm}0.13$) for the natural airborne particle episodes. Particularly, the regions covering east China, the Yellow Sea, the Korean Peninsula, and the east Korean sea were characterized by high levels of AOD. The average FW values observed during the event of anthropogenically affected aerosols ($0.63{\pm}0.16$) were moderately higher than those of natural airborne particles ($0.52{\pm}0.13$). This observation suggests that anthropogenically affected particles contribute greatly to the atmospheric aerosols in East Asia.

  • A molecular phylogenetic relationship inferred from mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequence was developed based on analysis of Zacco species distributed in Korea as well as China, Japan and Taiwan. A maximum parsimony (MP) tree showed that Korean Z. temminckii and Z. koreanus formed a monophyletic clade, but the populations of Z. temminckii and Z. koreanus in the 'South Korean Subdistrict' region had genetic similarity with Japanese Z. temminckii. Korean Z. platypus had a closer relationship with Japanese members of the clade than with Chinese Z. platypus, which was more closely related to Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis. The analysis of neighbor joining (NJ) tree may support a hypothesis that the clade of Z. platypus had genetically diverged from the common ancestor of Zacco species comprising Z. koreanus, Z. temminckii, Z. sieboldii and other species; thereafter a cladogenesis of Z. koreanus and Z. temmminckii had occurred from the ancestor of Z. sieboldii. Moreover, the Chinese Z. platypus had diverged far from the Korean Z. platypus and formed a phylogenetic relationship with O. uncirostris amurensis. Therefore, a more detailed study of the taxonomy and systematics of Zacco species in regard to their zoogeographical distributions is needed.

  • Malaria is mainly transmitted by Anopheles sinensis which is dominant species in malaria high-risk area, northern part of Gyeonggi province in Korea. Pyrethroid insecticide is used for malaria vector, An. sinensis in Korea and the previous investigation consistently reported insecticide resistance from the vector. This study investigated insecticide susceptible and resistant alleles from An. sinensis and the status of malaria vector control in malaria high-risk area. For the study, An. sinensis collected from Paju, Gimpo and Ganghwa were sequenced for kdr detection. In Paju, there was no homozygous susceptibility and all of tested samples had homozygous or heterozygous resistance. There were 6.7% for susceptible homozygosity and 93.3% for resistant homozygosity or heterozygosity in Gimpo. Furthermore, the percentages of homozygous susceptibility and homozygous or heterozygous resistance in Ganghwa were 5.7% and 94.3% respectively. The results showed that the frequency of the insecticide resistance from An. sinensis in malaria high-risk area were increased much more than the previous investigation. Hence, this study suggests that malaria vector control programs should have to be prepared for the management of pyrethroid insecticide resistance.

  • In this study, we tried to determine the origin of fine-grained sediments in Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud patch (SEYSM) using principal component analysis coupled with semi-quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis for 4 major clay minerals. We used 51 marine surface sediments from SEYSM and 33 surface sediments of rivers flowing into the Yellow Sea. We made bioplot diagram using R program with principal component 1 and component 2 because the two components might contain about 98% of all data. The content of each clay mineral in the south and north regions of SEYSM are almost similar. In the biplot, SEYSM sediments distribute close to Korean rivers sediments than Huanghe and Changjiang sediments. Based on these results, we suggest that SEYSM is originated from the Korean rivers sediments. The higher accumulation rate in the SEYSM compared to the sediment discharge from neighboring Korean rivers can be explained by erosion and reworking of surface sediments in this area. The principal component analysis can be used for the provenance research of marine sediments around the Korean Peninsula.
