  • It is strongly recommended that periodic quality assurance should be carried out in the Gamma Knife that is used in radiosurgery since high radiation is delivered in one session. Since the protocols for Gamma Knife recommended by associations or agencies on quality assurance are absent in Korea, hospitals possessing the Gamma Knife have developed their own protocols. In order to develop a quality assurance protocol suitable for Korea, we reviewed the protocols of the Gamma Knife manufacturer, USA and Japan. we categorized the periodic items into three parts,: radiation dose, mechanical and safety part. The USA recommended and regulated more strict than the manufacturer. Japan recommended the items and frequency based on the USA. In conclusion, we tried to suggest a basic Gamma Knife quality assurance protocol suitable for Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the status of health-related lifestyle according to the degree of disability, length of work, and type of work in massage therapists with visual impairment. A total of 236 visually impaired massage therapists who participated in refresher training in 2015 were participated in this study. Health-related lifestyle in this population was evaluated using validated health-related lifestyle questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed by $x^2$-testing using SPSS version 22.0. There were differences in regular breakfast and snack consumption according to the degree of disability. Massage therapists with shorter length of work more smoked and less consumed breakfast than massage therapists with longer length of work. Lastly, massage therapists who are working at massage parlor were more smoked and less regularly slept, consumed breakfast, and regularly rested than massage therapists who are working in other places. Collectively, degree of disability, length of work, and type of work impact health-related life-style in massage therapists with visual impairment.

  • Although Gamma Knife irradiates much more radiation in a single session than conventional radiotherapy, there were only a few studies to measure absolute dose of a Gamma Knife. Especially, there is no report of application of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) TRS-398 which requires to use a water phantom in radiation measurement to Gamma Knife. In this article, the authors reported results of the experiments to measure the absorbed dose to water of a Gamma Knife Model C using the IAEA TRS-398 protocol. The absorbed dose to water of a Gamma Knife model C was measured using a water phantom under conditions as close as possible to the IAEA TRS-398 protocol. The obtained results were compared with values measured using the plastic phantom provided by the Gamma Knife manufacturer. Two Capintec PR-05P mini-chambers and a PTW UNIDOS electrometer were used in measurements. The absorbed dose to water of a Gamma Knife model C inside the water phantom was 1.38% larger than that of the plastic phantom. The current protocol provided by the manufacturer has an intrinsic error stems from the fact that a plastic phantom is used instead of a water phantom. In conclusion, it is not possible to fully apply IAEA TRS-398 to measurement of absorbed dose of a Gamma Knife. Instead, it can be a practical choice to build a new protocol for Gamma Knife or to provide a conversion factor from a water phantom to the plastic phantom. The conversion factor can be obtained in one or two standard laboratories.

  • The definition of 'critical cancer' in critical insurance(CI) is more insurance meanings than medical meanings. The difference between critical cancer of insurance and critical cancer of medical cancer is made difficult problem to the underwriting of insurer, contractor and medical doctor. The limited factors of underwriting in critical cancer of critical insurance as follows: (1) the limitation factors in the definition of 1st item critical cancer in CI 1) the definition differences of meanings in insurer, contractor, and medical doctor 2) the meanings of "the table of malignance" 3) the definition difference between 'critical cancer' and 'a large of medical expense cancer' (2) the limitation factors in the definition of second item critical cancer in CI 1) The limitation in the change of cancer character 2) The missing malignancy in pathological result due to localized cancer 3) The differences in the test result of hospital (3) the limitation factors in the definition of third item critical cancer in CI. 1) the lower items disobey the higher items 2) clinical malignancy of benign cancer pathologically 3) others: (1) low grade of malignant melanoma (2) early prostate cancer. (3) malignancy related HIV (4) all skin cancer excepted malignant melanoma (5) accepted clinically and a medical certificate by medical doctor as critical cancer of premalignant lesion, carcinoma-in-situ, and borderline cancer.

  • Bruchidius siliquastri Delobel, 2007 belongs to the subfamily Bruchinae (Chrysomelidae) and is supposedly of eastern Asian origin. The species is recently regarded as an invasive species that infests the seeds of the leguminous plant Cercis siliquastrum L. (Fabaceae) in Europe. In Korea, this bruchid species was uploaded and identified by domestic Korean bloggers. However, they did not conduct a precise identification. Authors observed this species on a C. chinensis Bunge planted on the campus of Sunchon National University in the spring of 2022. In this study, we present new ecological data on the bruchid beetle B. siliquastri Delobel from Korea.

  • This study aims to raise awareness of the exposure index according to the Sub-ROI in clinical use by studying the effect of Sub-ROI's change on exposure index and dose during Chest PA examination. In this study, to examine the changes in EI and ESD according to the Sub-ROI setting, the irradiation conditions were set to 120 kVp, 200 mA, 2 mAs, and the SID was fixed to 180cm. Five types of Sub-ROI were used. The average value of EI according to the Sub-ROI's change was 135.58 ± 0.89 in AEC, 100.80 ± 0.80 in VR, 143.43 ± 0.76 in HR, 103.22 ± 0.68 in LS, and 102.79 ± 0.84 in SS. The mean value of ESD was 30.28±0.50 µGy in AEC, 30.16 ± 0.44 µGy in VR, 30.30 ± 0.46 µGy in HR, 30.23 ± 0.46 µGy in LS, and 30.28 ± 0.51 µGy in SS. As a result of this study, based on the AEC mode recommended by the manufacturer, the VR (25.7%), LS (23.9%), and SS (24.2%) modes decreased, and the HR mode increased by 5.7%. However, ESD was not affected by the Sub-ROI's change. Therefore, Sub-ROI may change EI during the Chest PA examination, it is considered that Sub-ROI should be used appropriately when setting protocols in clinical use.

  • Background: This study aimed to establish a strategy to improve the poor working environment and working conditions among long-term healthcare workers in Korea. Methods: A total of 600 questionnaires with which long-term health care workers participated in the targeted base areas of each city and province nationwide were distributed directly and 525 responses were collected and 506 responses were analyzed. Surveys, on-site field visits, and in-depth interviews were also conducted to understand the working environment as well as conditions and establish a strategy for improving the working environment among long-term healthcare workers to understand the demands of working conditions and working conditions. Results: Korean long-term care workers firstly and mostly enumerated their risk factors for ill-health when lifting or moving elderly recipients directly by hand (69.9%), followed by increased physical workload with old beds, tools, and facilities (42.3%) in the workplaces, shortage of manpower (32%), and source of infection (30%). To improve the working environment as well as conditions, Korean long-term care workers considered improving low-wage structures, ergonomic improvements to solve excessive physical loads, and increasing various bonus payments as well as implementing the salary system, positive social awareness, and increasing resting time. Of 506 responses, 92.3% replied that the long-term care insurance system for the elderly should be developed to expand publicization at the national level. Conclusion: This study proposes to improve the low-wage structure of Korean long-term care workers, automation and improvement of facilities, equipment, and tools to eliminate excessive physical loads (beneficiary elderly lifting), and reduction of night labor.
