In this study, a new concept of ocean transport system, called the mobile harbor serving for a short distance transport of containers with cargo handling cranes between mother containerships and coastal ports, is introduced. Instead of direct berthing a very large containership at the coastal port, Mobile Harbor is moving to the offshore mooring basin with enough water depth condition. Therefore, investigation of the coastal environment, technical condition and limitation of the domestic trade ports for the application of Mobile Harbor, is essential process. To figure out the accessibility of mobile harbor, the environmental conditions, the cargo handling capacity and marine traffic volume and flow pattern has been analyzed with the tools for marine traffic simulation and virtual navigation aids system. The most proper Mobile Harbor mooring areas among trade ports of the south and east coast are selected by analyzing the obtained information and evaluating its application: (1) Under natural environmental conditions such as air and sea weather, three candidate areas are selected such as Masan port, Ulsan port, and Busan(New port) port. (2) Under marine traffic and appropriateness of water facilities, three candidate areas are selected as Mokpo port, Busan(New port) port, and Donghae & Mookho port (3) For a region-based analysis considering handling capacity and the local managed trade ports in vicinity, three candidate areas are selected as Busan region, Yosu & KwangYang region, and Mokpo region. Through this study, the basic guideline for selection of optimum trade port and offshore mooring basin for mothership and Mobile Harbor is recommended. In order to apply the Mobile Harbor to the real water, navigaton aids as the virtual route identification with AIS must be introduced for maritime safety in the vicinity of Mobile Harbor area which berthing and cargo handling is being conducted.

We reviewed foreign evaluation systems based on the macrobenthic and macroalgal communities and developed a system, composed of a set of ecological indices able to evaluate the functionality (FI, Functional Index; estimation of stability and productivity) and maturity (MI, Maturity Index; comparisons with biological parameters of natural reefs) of artificial reefs by comparing the status in the adjacent natural reefs in Korean coastal waters. The evaluation system was applied to natural and artificial reefs/reef-planned areas (natural reefs), established in the 5 marine ranching areas (Bangnyeong-Daechung, Yeonpyung, Taean, Seocheon and Buan) in the west coast of Korea. The FI ranged between 31.6 (Bangnyeong-Daechung) and 72.5% (Buan) and MI did between 53.1 (Seocheon) and 76.9% (Taean) in average. The evaluation of artificial reefs by the two indices, showed the most appropriate status in Taean. The FI between the adjacent artificial and natural reefs were in significant linear relationship ($r^2=0.83$, p=0.01). This indicated the local status of biological community may be critical in determining the functionality of the artificial reefs. We have suggested an integrative but preliminary evaluation system of artificial reefs in this study. The output from the evaluation system may be utilized as a tool for environment/resource managers or policy makers, responsible for effective use of funds and decision making. Given the importance, we need to use the options to enhance and improve the accuracy as follows: (1) continuous validation of the evaluation system and rescaling the criteria of indicators, (2) vigorous utilization of observation and experience through the application and data accumulation and (3) development and testing of brand-new indicators.
The survey was done in order to find what kinds of birds visit Taeanhaean National Park during breeding season, where we fixed up 10 coastal areas and islands within the National Park. Three groups concurrently performed the field research from 5th to 9th of July in 2009. Total 58 species and 7,323 individuals were recorded in Taeanhaean National Park. 48 species including 6,187 individuals were observed in coastal areas and 33 species including 1,136 individuals in island areas. The most dominant species in the National Park are Larus crassirostris which accounts for 60% of the birds inhabiting there, and they seem to have been bred in the islands near the National Park. The birds observed only around the coastal areas include Anas poecilorhyncha, Fulica atra, Egretta intermedia and the others which consist of 25 species and amount to 318 individuals, and the birds found exclusively in island areas include Phalacrocorax filamentosus, Apus pacificus¸ Locustella pleskei and other birds, which consist of 10 species and the number of those individuals observed was 308. The inhabited islands areas such as Gauido were characterized by high ratio of waterbird population, which seems to be correlated with the factors such as the extent of island, the richness of water resources, and the diversity of habitats. Based on the data collected during the research and other data from the previous observations, the kinds of dominant species remain nearly unchanged. And in spite of the oil spill accident in 2007, the increase in the number of waterbirds compared to 2004 may be the evidence that the area is recovering from the environmental pollution. At present, the tidal power plants are being built or scheduled to be built and large-scale reclamation is also under way. What is worse, those areas are seeing the increase of pension construction, which is likely to be the potential cause of damage and disturbance against some key habitats for the waterbirds. Therefore, it is a major priority that we build the bird information system to efficiently manage the knowledge-based asset collected from bird-watching groups and to better monitor the areas that need enhanced database through which the National Park can be appropriately administered.

The process of constructing coastal digital elevation model(DEM), for the 3 dimensional analysis, is composed by abstracting land layers for land elevation and water depth, reprojecting UTM, relocating geographical grid, and interpolating works. The geomorphic set of shallow sea, including tidal current, tidal zone deposition, and water depth distribution, was analyzed by eye search of Landsat TM image, masking of land zone, band combination and regression analysis. Some horizontal differences, between combined DEM and surveyed data of shallow sea, was corrected for analysis. Analyzed geomorphic elements are stream channel, alluvial fan, coastal terrace, tidal current. and shallow sea bank. Results of analysis present that transported fluvial materials influence tidal sedimentation, especially from Gahwacheon river, for the role of artificial draining flooding waters from Jinyang Reservoir, almost in the summer season. In the coastal area with less tidal current, more fine materials are deposited. The influence of currental deposition are higher on small pockets with west coast of well developed terraces. The lower skirt of alluvial fans developed into the tidal zone of shallow sea. Small pocket type bays are closed by coastal current, and less influenced from tidal deposition. The bank of Jinju Bay are developed originally from submerging of remnant erosional mountain ranges, and play on the role of trapping fine materials.

As coastal erosion is increasing sharply because of sudden changes in the natural environment and increases in artificial development, the problem of coastal erosion become an important issue, socially and economically. To building the data which needed to grasp the situation and find a solution, we need the monitoring system for long-term. In this study, we analyzed the coastal topography and land cover changes in the Haeundae Beach during 60 years. The Haeundae Beach is the most famous beach in the country and coastal erosion are going on. First, we analyzed the change of coastal topography by calculated the coastline and area of the beach using aerial photos during 60 years. We extracted the coastline by digitized on aerial photo and corrected the height of tide level using sounding and GPS survey data. And we computed the area of beach and analyzed the change of area during 60 years. Second, we analyzed the change of land cover using landcover map. We made the detailed landcover map by on-screen digitizing and estimated the soil loss for the area nearby Haeundae Beach. As a result, we could see that the coastline get nearer to land and the area of beach has been reduced in general. We think that interception of sand supply by the development is the artificial cause of coastal erosion. The result of this study would be useful in long-term coastal monitoring and to analyze the cause of coastal environment change. We expect that the result is available on the coastal information system.
Seabird distribution in the East Sea was studied from April to May 2007 using line transect counts. We observed a total of 1,379 individuals of 23 species including 14 species of seabird. The overall seabird sighting rate was 2.5 birds $km^{-2}$. The Streaked shearwater(Calonectris leucomelas)(74.5%) was the numerically dominant species. Ancient murrelets(Synthliboramphus antiquus)(8.3%), red-throated divers(Gavia stellata)(5.0%), common terns(Sterna hirundo)(2.1%), Pacific divers(Gavia pacifica)(2.0%), and black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris)(1.1%) were also frequently observed. The sightings of seabirds was highest between $36^{\circ}N$ and $37^{\circ}N$ of the coastal area of the Korean peninsular. However, the index of species diversity(H') was higher between $35^{\circ}N$ and $36^{\circ}N$. The sighting rates of most observed species decreased with distance from the coastline. The distribution patterns of Streaked shearwater were linked to the variation in the distribution pattern of minke whales(Balaenoptera acutorostrata). Also, spatial segregation was found in the distributions of the two species of divers(Gavia spp.).

During the winter in February 1998, January and April 1999, interdisciplinary research was conducted in a large area including the South Sea of Korea and northern East China Sea to examine distribution and structure. Water masses identified from the observed data are Warm Water originated from Tsushima Warm Current, Yellow Sea Cold Water (Northern or Central Cold Water) and Korean Southern Sea Cold Water. In the southern Yellow Sea, Warm Water originated from Tsushima Warm Current, flowing into the Cheju Strait after turning around the western Cheju Island, makes a front of '┍' shape, which is bounded by the Yellow Sea Central Cold Water in the southern part of Daeheuksan Island and by the Yellow Sea Northern Cold Water in the eastern part of the Yangtze Bank. This front changes its corner shape and position with strength of the warm water extension toward northwestern Yellow Sea. The position and structure of the fronts off the southwestern tip of the Korean peninsular and near the Yangtze Bank varies with observation period. In the front in the South Sea of Korea, cold coastal water which if formed independently due to local cooling, ,sinks along the sloping bottom. We explained the processes of variations in the distribution and structure of these winter fronts in terms of up-wind and down-wind flow by the seasonal monsoon, heat budget through the sea surface and density difference across the fronts.
Two kinds of carrageenan were extracted from red seaweeds, Tichocarpus crinitus, collected in The Peter the Great Bay of Russia on August, 1996. One is KC1-insoluble carrageenan and another is KC1-soluble carrageenan. The yield of KC1-insoluble carrageenan was 17.15%, which is composed of 18.06% total sulfate, 5.61% protein, 3.51% K+, 0.49% Na+, 1.66% Ca2+, 54.26% galactose, 4.68% xylose, trace of mannose and glucose. The yield of KC1-soluble carrageenan was 3.52%, which is composed of 24.06% total sulfate, 5.2% protein, 5.32% K+, 0.16% Na+, 2.80% Ca2+, 33.54% galactose, 5.48% xylose, 4.32% mannose, trace of glucose. But rhamnose was not detected in both case. FT-IR spectrum showed that the KC1-insoluble carrageenan was kappa-type carrageenan and that KC1-soluble carrageenan was lambda, iota hybrid-type carrageenan. KC1-insoluble carrageenan was very weakly formation the gel compared with KC1-insoluble carrageenan from other red seaweeds. So we investigated viscosity. Both type carrageenan was stable in the temperature until 9$0^{\circ}C$, 1 hr. The viscosity of the solution of KC1-insoluble carrageenan was increased to about two folds by K+, but was not changed by Ca2+. The viscosity of the solution of KC1-soluble carrageenan was reduced by K+ and Ca2+. Both of them was stabilized in alkali but was reduced in comparison with acid conditions. In this study, both carrageenan was expected as thickening agent than gelling agent for food additives.

Physical and acoustic properties of the Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) of Korea were studied by using 10 piston cores. The data were also compared with mudbelt sediments in the South Sea and the East Sea (southeastern inner shelf) of Korea. The sediments were mainly composed of homogeneous silt. Sandy mud and mud were minor components. The major source of sediment in the study area is probably the Keum River. Finegrained sediments discharged from the river are transported southward by coastal current, resulting in a gradual southward increase in porosity and a decrease in wet bulk density and sound velocity. The mean grain size especially appears to be the most important variable to determine the physical properties and velocity. The variations of physical properties with burial depth are dependent more strongly on sediment texture (especially, silt content) than compaction and/or consolidation. Correlations between the physical properties and the sediment texture show slight deviations from those of the East Sea and the South Sea of Korea in spite of similar pattern within the limiting values. This is probably due to the differences in silt contents, sedimentary environments, mineral compositions, and gas contents.
Garolim Bay is not only important fishing ground but also expected area for the tidal power plant. The construction and operation of tidal power plant will make change the ecosystem of this bay. Therefore, the actual fisheries stocks should be precisely understood for the effect estimation and overall utilization of the bay after the construction of the tidal power plant. During the study period from January through December in 1981, forty-six adult fishes species, 3 species of fish egg and 25 fishes larvae species have occurred in the bay. Considering the result on monthly distribution of eggs and larvae, the inner area of the bay seems to be important as nursing ground of larvae spawned at the outside bay in winter, e. g., Ammodytes personatus, and Enedrias sp. This inner bay is also major spawning ground for many species spawning in spring and summer, e. g., Gobiidae, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonica, etc. Taking into consideration the annual mean production for three years($1978{\sim}1980$), there are two major fishing seasons. The one is in May-June for Enedrias larvae stock, and the another in October-November for big eyed herring stock. For the mariculture stocks, short necked clam, oyster and laver are important species. After construction of the tidal power plant, the migratory species, i. e., larvae of Enedrias and Ammodytes personatus, Mugil cephalus, Konosirus punctatus, etc. will be directly damaged by the interuption of migration route. On the otter hand, the change of physico-chemical factors of seawater will also affect the ecosystem of the bay. Consequently, for the overall utilization of the bay after construction, the actual ecosystem including the fisheries stocks, must bs precisely revealed, and the mechanical designs, e. g., sluice position and its demension, should be also considered with these biological characters of the bay.
