Faced with the rich variety of materials available, it is often a challenging task for language teachers to select the most suitable coursebook. It is required that they carry out a detailed and comprehensive analysis of coursebooks and evaluate them with a set of criteria to guide the process. 32 Korean teachers took part in the primary KSL textbook evaluation that aimed to identify improvement areas. They used a pro-forma specified with 51 criteria. The teachers' responses to the questions in the pro-forma were statistically analyzed to draw implications for material evaluation. The findings of the analysis suggest that the KSL textbook for primary multicultural students need to be improved at the internal and external levels. Implications are discussed with focus on material evaluation and development, and KSL teacher professional development by helping them gain good and useful insights into the nature of the textbook, and sensitizing them to features to look for in teaching and learning materials.

  • This study aims to analyze through the integrated textbooks whether writing tasks are designed to be successful in cultivating students' writing abilities in the general-purpose Korean language education. First, we established the concept and the components of the writing task based on the definitions mentioned in previous research. The analysis of the types of writing tasks revealed "free writing" and "imitation and writing" to be the most frequent types of writing tasks in both textbooks. The textbooks have only twenty-one subjects in common. And most instructions provide only themes and genres, excluding the purpose, form, quantity, and time necessary for the article or for comprehending the instructions. In these tasks, the reading passages are most often explanatory text. The scoring criteria and time were not provided for the evaluation criteria and other factors. Therefore it became necessary to express the components of the writing task as explicitly and concretely as possible to improve learners' performances.

  • This study surveyed the recognition on the Korean education for specific purposes targeting student-teachers majoring Korean language education in a Cyber University located in Seoul. 50 among 57 students taking the class participated in this survey. The participants were the students-teachers interested in Korean education for the mission purposes and took the class during the second term in 2020. At the end of the term they participated in this survey. 6 items were objective and 4 items were narrative. Among the narrative ones, one was excluded from analysis. The objective items were investigated by descriptive statics and the narrative items were analyzed with qualitative approach. As a result, most of the participants preferred the combined textbooks with others such as the ones for general and mission purposes rather than the bibles only. They had positive opinions on using the bibles, but proposed that the bibles themselves are not the best choice for improving communicative competence and the text combination is the better choice because of the difficulty of the bibles, the lack of teachers' competence, and the learners' needs. However, while taking this class, they became to be aware of the possibilities of the bibles as textbooks, to possess the concern about the mission areas, to consider the possibilities of application and the educational methods in it, and to reflect the ways for self development. This study suggested several points as follows: the development of diverse textbooks according to situations and learners, two directions of teacher education and the cooperative works, and the necessities of the related departments and classes with mission purposes.

Furthermore, it examined how the language activities in the textbooks were shown from the four dimensions such as the knowledge of language structure, the process knowledge, the context knowledge, and the content knowledge; in particular, it focused on the content knowledge. It found out the results as follows. The rationales in structuring the chapters were not consistent with inner structures and contents. All the four writing knowledges were applied to each textbook; however, the emphasis and the proportion were different in each textbook. Also, it pointed out the textbook which contains diverse activities to be able to help the learners form the content knowledge and this sort of textbook is more effective from the perspective of social constructivism. Based on those results, it discussed several points which can be considered in the development and the selection of Korean writing textbooks later.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze phonetic items such as the phonemic system, phonological rules, and pronunciation descriptions and notations incorporated in the textbooks. Based on our analysis results, we point out the problems related to pronunciation education, and suggest directions for improvement. First, the presentation order of consonants and vowels in the phonological systems sections of each textbook was different. We recommend that a standard for consonant and vowel presentation order should be prepared, but that this standard should take into consideration the specific purpose of the textbook; the learning strategies and goals, as well as the possibility of teaching and learning. Second, similar to phonemic systems, the presentation order of phonological rules was different for each textbook. To create a standard order for phonological rules, we have to standardize the order of presentation of rules and determine which rules should be presented. Furthermore, when describing phonological rules, the content should be described in common and essential terms as much as possible without the use of jargon. Third, in other matters of pronunciation, there were problems such as examples for pronunciation and lack of exercises. Regarding this, we propose to provide sentences or dialogues as examples for pronunciation, and to link these to various activities and other language functions for pronunciation practice.

This is the important part of Korean language education that needs to be guided by married immigrant women. Based on this, 130 Chinese characters idioms in Korean language education and textbook development centered on married immigrant women were selected and catalogue edited in four stages. It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as a reference for Korean language education research and textbook development for married immigrant women in the future.

  • This study is to form develops an effective teaching method centered on the Korean "symbol adverb + predicate" type, helping Chinese students to learn Korean to communicate more accurately when expressing detailed complex feelings and various emotions.Manyforeignlanguage learners try to memorize individual words when they acquire the new vocabulary, this may lead to a problematic in that they cannot use Korean vocabulary accurately and naturally because they do not value the combination of vocabulary words. Since symbolic adverbs are not used in isolation and being frequently used with certain vocabulary words, it is more effective to teach them in the form of instruct learners using "symbol adverb + predicate" forms rather than individual vocabulary words. Accordingly, this research considers a particular vocabulary following symbolic adverbs or vocabulary groups with common semantic qualities that could be frequently introduced. Seven Korean language textbooks used by university in domestic Korea and China are compared and analyzed to reveal the aspects of differences in the use of descriptive words after symbolic adverbs. Finally, based on the textbook analysis results, the government propose a plan to improve the Korean "symbol adverb + predicate" type for Chinese learners. However, this study was limit to being unable to present specific educational measures for Chinese learners in the form of "symbol adverb + predicate". This is expected to complement the limitations of this study in subsequent studies, and lead to more specific discussions.

In this study, we have the IPA of the Korean language textbooks from the total of 158 surveys that were collected from teachers who teach Korean at King Sejong Institute and overseas university. The survey conducted about the Korean textbooks regarding the following questionnaires: 1) integrated and separated textbooks, 2) textbooks by learners' variables, 3) teaching materials by media type, 4) supplementary teaching materials, 5) diffusion and support of textbooks. The result of this survey found that supporting for the separated textbooks is needed, and there is a high demand for localized textbooks considering local characteristics. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that King Sejong Institute has a high demand for textbooks that can be downloaded from the web despite most of institutes are highly satisfied with paper textbooks. For the supplementary textbooks, it was found that vocabulary learning materials were needed for the King Sejong school students and additional reading materials for overseas college learners needed to be developed. We also found that it is necessary to support not only the development of textbooks but also smooth and efficient diffusion.
