The solidification/stabilization mechanism of each cementious material was investigated. It was found that when $C_3$S was hydrated , the Pb element could be transferred to the insoluble Ca[Pb(OH)$_3$.$H_2O$]$_2$and the Cr element to the CaCr $O_4$$H_2O$. The addition of heavy metal tends to delay the hydration until initial 7 days. The Pb element as also delayed the hydration and the Cr element was substituted for the ettringite. On the occasion of the hydration of $C_4$$A_3$$S^{S}$, the Pb and Cr ions were solidified/stabilized by the substitution into the ettringite and/or monosulfate. Leaching of the Pb, Cr and Zn elements in the solidified material was extremely little, indicating that heavy metals were effectively solidified/stabilized in the hydrated cementious materials. Solidification/stabilization of heavy metal ions in the industrial wastes such as the STS, BF and COREX sludge was investigated. In case of the mixing ratio of cement and slag was 3 : 7, leaching of hazardous heavy metal ions was very little, indications that the solidification and stabilization was very successful.l.

In this study, fundamental properties of cement were reviewed to apply high fineness cement at low temperature environment. The classified high fineness cement has large proportion of particles below $10{\mu}m$ which affects early hydration: an overall reaction of cement hydration faster. As a result of using high fineness cement, setting time of concrete was reduced and compressive strength was higher than OPC at all ages. Especially, compressive strength was more than double its value compared with OPC after three days curing in low temperature. Faster reaction and higher heat of hydration was verified by calorimetry early and maximum heat of hydration was analyzed by adiabatic temperature raising test. The analysis of this study confirmed that high fineness cement can be suitable to be used in low temperature environment.
When calcium sulfoaluminate-based expansive cement was hydrated, ettringite and monosulfate were mainly formed. The crack of hardened cement was prevented by compensating drying shrinkage due to formation of the above hydrates. In order to study the hydration properties of calcium sulfoaluminate-based expanding cement, 3CaOㆍ3Al$_2$O$_3$ㆍCaSO$_4$(C$_4$A$_3$S) was prepared by chemical synthesis, and then the hydration of $C_4$A$_3$S-Ca(OH)$_2$-CaSO$_4$.$2H_2O$-C$_3$A system_was characterized. Good $C_4$A$_3$S phase was prepared at $1300^{\circ}C$ by chemical synthesis, and the main hydration product of $C_4$A$_3$S-Ca(OH)$_2$-CaSO$_4$.2$H_2O$ system was ettringite. In the case of hydration $C_4$A$_3$S-Ca(OH)$_2$-CaSO$_4$ㆍ 2$H_2O$-C$_3$A system, ettringite was formed in the early period and it was transformed into monosulfate while consumed gypsum.

This study aims to obtain technical data for improvement of utilization of Blast Furnace Slag(BFS), recycled aggregate in the future by complementing fundamental problems of BFS such as manifestation of initial strength and excessive alkali quantity as well as weakness of recycled fine aggregate through manufacturing of recycled fine aggregate mortar using BFS. The recycled aggregate includes the cement paste hardened as the surface and the type of the aggregate, which contains plenty of calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$) as well as the unhydrated cement. Accordingly, the objectives of this study are to inspect the manufacturing the recycled fine aggregate mortar used with blast furnace slag, to consider the effects of the recycled aggregate on the strength development of ground granulated blast furnace slag, and then to acquire the technical data to take into consideration the further usages of the recycled aggregate and blast furnace slag. In eluted ions from recycled aggregate, it showed that there were natrium($Na^+$) and kalium($K^+$), expected to be flown out of unhydrated cement, as well as calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$). Application of this water to mix cement mortar with ground granulated blast furnace slag was observed to expedite hydration as calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$) and unhydrated cement component were expressed to give stimuli effects on ground granulated blast furnace slag. The results of the experiment show that the recycled aggregate mixed with blast furnace slag has comparatively higher hydration activity in 7 day than the mortar not mixed with one in 3 day mortar does, causing the calcium hydroxide in the recycled fine aggregate to work on as a stimulus to the hydration of ground granulated blast furnace slag.

In this study, Neutralized red mud(LRM+S) at a pH of 6-8 was prepared by adding sulfuric acid to liquefied red mud(LRM) at a pH of 10~12. After adding LRM and LRM+S to the cement paste, the hydration heat, compressive strength, and hydration products were examined. The observed accumulated hydration heat revealed that the calorific value of the cement paste with LRM was low and its and peak was delayed when compared with that of plain cement paste(referred to as Plain), whereas the calorific value of the cement paste with LRM+S was similar to that of Plain. At the age of 28 days, the compressive strength of the cement paste with 20% LRM was 55% of the strength of Plain. Using X-ray diffraction, it was determined that the cement paste with 20% LRM exhibited a Ca(OH)2 peak after 3 days, whereas the cement paste with 20% LRM+S and Plain exhibited a Ca(OH)2 peak after an hour. Thus, the strength degradation of cementitious materials was improved by adding neutralized red mud prepared by adjusting the pH of highly alkaline LRM with sulfuric acid.
The hydration characteristics of barley kernels with various polishing yields were investigated at temperatures of $20-60^{\circ}C$ and their sorption kinetics were studied. The moisture gain in initial stage of hydration was directly proportional to square root of hydration time and there was a break point at the moisture gain of 0.45-0.55g $H_2O/g$ solid. The hydration rate was great in order of polishing yield of 50, 70, 95, 90 and 100%, and increased with increasing hydration temperature. The diffusivity of water into barley kernels followed Arrhenius equation, and the activation energies in hydration reaction of polished barley were ranged from 6.9 to 9.5 Kcal/mole and that of non-polished one was 11.6Kcal/mole.
This paper describes the methods to propose the optimal material properties and construction steps that prevent cracks due to the thermal stresses induced by the hydration heat under the construction of the concrete underpass structures. To achieve the goal of this study, the heat transfer theories were employed and the three-dimensional finite element model of the underpass structure was developed and used for the structural analyses. If the volume of the concrete member that is placed at one time is significantly large, the member is assumed to be the mass concrete and is easy to induce cracks. In order to minimize the cracks during the construction, two different methods can be utilized: one is to arrange the construction steps optimally and the other is to change the materials to reduce the probability of the crack occurrence. In this study, the analyses were performed by considering the changes in material properties with time, the characteristics of the hydration heat generation for cements and admixtures, the volume of the concrete placement at one time, and the environmental conditions.
Geomembrane, compacted clay liner, and geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) are widely used to prevent leachate from leaking to adjacent geo-environment at a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill. Interface shear strength between GCL and geomembrane installed at a landfill side slope is important properties for the safe design of side liner or final cover systems. The interface shear strength between two geosynthetics was estimated by a large direct shear test in this study. The shear strength was evaluated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The effects of normal stress, hydration or dry condition, and a hydration method were investigated. The test results show that the interface shear strength and shear behavior varied depending up on the level of normal stress, the type of geosynthetic combinations, and a hydration method. When GCLs were sheared after being hydrated under 6kPa loading, the results were consistent with those published by other researchers. Summaries of friction angles, normal stress and hydration condition is presented. These friction angles could be used as a reference value at a site where similar geosynthetics are installed.
In this work, the hydration behaviour of portland cement pastes containing fly ash, blast-furnace slag and silica fume is investigated by Impedance Spectroscopy(IS). As fly ash or blast-furnace slag was added to portland cement, the values of R$_{t(s+1)}$ and R$_{t(s+1)}$ were decreased in the early hydration period. It showed that hydration of cement containing blending components was slower than it of the reference cement paste with the same W/C ratio. However, the cement paste containing silica fume had a large value of R$_{t(s+1)}$ and R$_{t(int)}$due to very rapid pozzolanic reactivity of silica fume in the hydration time. In OPC-fly ash system, a characteristic plateau region appeared between straight-line and semicircle. The plateau region continued to grow in range with the content of fly ash and the hydration time.

In this study, we conducted the kinetic hydration modeling of OPC and the final product according to the substitution ratio of GGBS by using the geochemical code, GEMS, in order to calculate the thermodynamic equilibrium. The thermodynamic data was used by GEMS's 3rd party database, Cemdata18, and the cement hydration model, the Parrot & Killoh model was applied to simulate the hydration process. In OPC modeling, ion concentration of pore solution and hydration products by mass and volume were observed according to time. In the GGBS modeling, as the substitution rate increases, the amount of C-S-H, which contributes the long-term strength, increases, but the amount of Portlandite decreases, which leads to carbonation and steel corrosion. Therefore, it is necessary to establish prevention of some deterioration.
