This study highlights the importance of securing a logistics hub area by fostering cooperation and friendly relations with China's three northeastern three provinces, which are crucial to the success of the New Northern Policy. In particular, the study aims to analyze current status of trade with these region and freight volume transported by ships and recommend political advice for securing logistics hub and revitalizing maritime transport. As the policy suggestion, this study is to establish a logistics hub by implementing joint port operations, constructing port infrastructure jointly, and operating shipping companies together. Additionally, we propose ways to revitalize the maritime passenger transport business between Korea and China, which involves expanding cultural exchanges and developing content.

  • Geoturism has been discussed from multiple perspectives in geomorphology and geology as well as tourism domain since 2000. As of May 2013, 172 academic papers and reports on Geoturism have been published in domestic journals. Themes of these researches can be categorized into 6 topics: resource development (i.e. natural resource development, cultural resource development, development of geopark), conservation and management, geoturist, local resident participation and public relations marketing, political approaches. Resource development among those topics has been treated the most: development and utilization of important geomorphological and geological landscape resources, storytelling development about cultual resources, contents development for geopark. On the whole, it is significant that geotourism is actively discussed in geography domain such as geomorphology rather than in geology domain. Up to date, those topics have also been treated only in certain academic areas. In the future researches, efforts for the balance among those topics and creating new themes from various research areas is necessary. Moreover, community networking among locals-municipalities-academia is also necessary to increase local participants.

  • This study proposes a strategy to attract visitors by analyzing the justification for hosting the 2027 Summer World University Games in Chungcheong, Korea, as well as by assessing the internal and external factors to promote regional development. Using Environmental Analysis as the diagnostic approach, we focus on strength/opportunity (SO), strength/threat (ST), weakness/opportunity (WO), and weakness/threat (WT) analyses. SO analysis show that a matching strategy of mid- to long-term cooperation among the four cities and provinces in Chungcheong and development of local sports by promoting its linkages to science, and industry offer best strategic use-value. ST analysis shows that optimal infrastructure development and establishment of competition management strategies in preparation for non-face-to-face engagement make balanced regional development possible. WO analysis shows the need for rearrangement and renovation of outdated sports facilities, development of programs linked to convergence sports tourism products, efficient and strategic attraction activities, and promoting sustainable development of bed town cities. WT analysis suggests that the imbalance in regional development due to expansion of sports facilities, insufficient cultural contents in tourism, and tourism demand fluctuation are potential problems. Follow-up studies can focus on deeper analysis of the possibility and attractiveness of hosting the Summer World University Games in Chungcheong, Korea using qualitative methods such as focus group interviews and in-depth interviews with stakeholders and local residents.
