  • A previous record of Coleosporium phellodendri on Zanthoxylum ailanthoides in Korea by Korean researchers was regarded as C. zanthoxyli by foreign scientists without further studies. To clarify the identity of a Coleosporium species occurring on Z. ailanthoides in Korea, we examined the morphological characteristics of eight materials and analyzed the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S large subunit (LSU) rDNA regions of three representative specimens which were collected in Korea and deposited in the Mycological Herbarium at Korea University (Seoul, Korea). All specimens collected in Korea were morphologically and molecularly determined to be C. zanthoxyli. Therefore, this is the first confirmed report on the presence of C. zanthoxyli on Z. ailanthoides in Korea.

  • This study analyzes whether Income Contingent Loan achieves the policy goal of reducing the burden on higher education expenses with the emphasis on the repayment structure of the loan system and suggest ways to improve the incumbent policy. The study found that the voluntary repayment amount of the loan is much higher than the mandatory repayment amount. Therefore, various policy improvement measures are needed to activate the original purpose of the loan. We proposes improvements to the repayment, such as diversification of the repayment base rate, introduction of the loan integration, and analysis of loan default probability. In addition, this study has policy and academic implications in that it has suggested policy improvement measures by analyzing various overseas cases.

  • Phytochemicals in fruits, vegetables, cereals, and nuts, advertised as "antioxidants", combat undesirable effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body. These undesirable effects include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders. Although ROS were initially considered to be primarily damaging agents, ROS have been discovered to play a role in signaling immune and other physiological responses in recent years. Several studies have demonstrated that ROS act as essential signaling molecules to promote metabolic health. Therefore, the overall advantage of the interference of ROS signals by antioxidants could be questionable. Future research is required to understand the implications of the application of phytochemicals in functional foods and supplements for health benefits on ROS levels in the body. This study describes the new roles of ROS and hormesis of various phytochemicals to provide a possible research guideline to food and nutrition scientists.

  • Nakron School of the ruling Noron Party in late Joseon Dynasty was at the helm of state with Neo-Confucian ideology and it came out of being obsessed with conventional 'spiritual' aspects and changed both political and academic atmosphere with interests in 'matters.' The power leading such a change was scholars in Seoksil Seowon (石室書院) which centered around Kim Won-Haeng (金元行). However, except for few progressive scholars-Bukhak scholars (北學論者), most of Nakron scholars secretly acknowledged the actuality of Qing Dynasty but they failed to get out of old Neo-Confucian traditions. It was difficult for them to accept Bukhak theory which jeopardized the existence of administration. They sought plans both to keep Neo-Confucian traditions and Sinocentrism in Joseon and to reach the cultural level of Qing Dynasty and in that process, they recognized restoration of the statecraft study (經世學) summarized on Seongridaejeon as an alternative. Hwang Yun-Seok is a representative Neo-Confucian scholar in such response of Nakron. He rediscovered value of the science of xiangshu in the Neo-Confucian category and highlighted importance of Seongridaejeon yet again.

  • This paper examines the standard codes (Gangnyung: 綱領), basis of the study of Chunchu in Chunchuhak tradition during Chosun dynasty, through Park Sechae's Chunchubopyeon. The author aims to uncover the common awareness of, or an agreed view of, Chunchu among scholars of Chosun dynasty. Since Chunchubopyeon represents the Neo-Confucian understanding of Chunchu, it can be argued that the Gangnyung section of this book contained the standard codes which formed the basis of Chunchu studies. Of five key themes in Gangnyung, this paper addresses two in detail, and . The first argues that Chunchu is the grand principle of governing the world; a living law which drives the reality. The second theme, through a detailed recording of Chunchu, examines the grand principle of Chunchu. When studies after the present paper address the remaining themes in Gangnyung, it is expected that an access to the general characteristics or features of Chunchuhak during Chosun dynasty will be granted.

  • This paper studies Zhu Xi's critical comprehension about the theories of gewu zhizhi of senior Confucian scholars, focusing on the Daxue Zhangju, Daxue huowen, and Daxue huowen yulei of Zhuzi yulei. Zhu Xi described in depth the theory of gewu zhizhi of Sima Guang, disciples of the Cheng Yi(Lu Dalin, Xie Liangzuo, Yin Ch'un, Yang Shi), scholars of Hu-Xing province(Hu An-guo, Hu hong), Li Dong in the Daxue huowen and Daxue huowen yulei, by his understanding through a criticism of the theory of gewu zhizh, thereby formulating a theory of gewu zhizhi on the basis of Cheng Yi's theory. Through this criticism of senior Confucian scholars, Zhu Xi explained that the theory of gewu zhizhi was departed from a positive affirmation of things. Zhu Xi claimed that the crux of gewu zhizhi was a thorough understanding like a sudden release achieved by accumulating Li of things. This plan of Zhu Xi with respect to "Supplementary Chapter on the Gewu Zhizhi" showed that the theory of gewu zhizhi which was set up by himself corresponded to the theory of Cheng Yi's, and it was based on the Confucian tradition firmly.

  • This paper aims for a study on the theory that mind is Li(principle). The method of research is laid emphasis on searching for the historical development of the perception Theory in late Cho-Sun. First of all, I investigated a meaning of the perception theories of Ho-Rak school, that were criticized in the Cho-Sun academic world. The next, I investigated the theory of Li-ju-Ki-ja that was raised by Yi Sang Jung. He thought that Li is supervisor and Ki is assistance. And he put a construction on the Perception Theories of Toegye school. Yi Jin sang's theory of perception is the result of criticism against Ho-Rak school, and a fresh and in-depth construction of Yi Sang Jung's perception theory. His viewpoint was contradiction to the theory of Sim si Ki(the theory that Mind is made of Ki). And he rediscovered the human conscience that was born endowed from Heaven.

  • Didier Éribon's dialogue with Ernst Gombrich, first published in 1991 in France, stands as a curious example of interpreting a scientific mind into a popular narrative. On the occasion of its brand new translation in Korean, this essay examines the encounter of two different languages, that of scholarly art history and the other, of "entretien". Éribon's previous interviews with Georges Dumézil and Claude Lévi-Strauss have already shown the perfect use of dialogue that interprets in simple words some currents of European thoughts of 20th century at its highest level. The double identity found in the extraordinary profile of the author of The Story of Art should help us deal with this particular form of dialogue in depth, and expect another possibility of explaining and reconstructing academia.
