  • The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of a VR(virtual reality)-based biology class on both the cognitive and affective domains by developing and applying a VR-based biology program for 6th-grade elementary school students. For this research, we developed a VR teaching material about 'digestion' reflecting virtual reality characteristics and one hundred five students in an elementary school in an urban area participated in this study and took three VR-based lessons. To examine the cognitive effects of a VR-based biology class, the study subjects were divided into two groups. The experimental group was composed of 50 individuals who participated in VR-based biology lessons, while 55 students of a control group learned through general lessons. We collected data using drawing tasks for measuring students' modeling performance level from these groups and analyzed the cognitive effect of VR-based instruction. We also recorded 21 interviews of students after the intervention, which were transcribed to verify the students' perception of cognitive and affective effects. The key results are as follows: First, we demonstrated the possibility of applying a VR program reflecting VR characteristics (manipulation, multi-sensory, and interaction). Second, we found out that a VR-based biology class significantly enhances higher levels of thinking (spatial, abstract, and reflective thinking). Third, we examined students' perceptions on this program and came to the conclusion that VR characteristics positively affected cognitive and affective domains. This study may be able to contribute to offering guidelines on how to apply VR-programs to future science education effectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare characteristics of students lived in volcanic region or not while observing the igneous rocks basalt and granite. For the study we recruited 68 fifth-grade students in Jeju Island, 29 fifthgrade students in Ulleung Island and 61 fifth-grade students in inland area area. This study was conducted as follows: After observing of granite and basalt, the students wrote observations. At the end of observation they also wrote all knowledges about granite and basalt except for the observations. The results are as follows: First, igneous rocks observations did not show a statistically significant difference between regional characteristics variables. Second, the amount of knowledge that students knew about granite and basalt except for the observation facts also did not show significant differences. Third, in the results of qualitative analysis for knowledges about granite and basalt except for the observation facts, many students knew about the igneous origin and about the substance but there were few statements that reflected the characteristics of the location. This results will provide a meaningful implication that the science class must consist of the use a various examples associated with a real-life.

  • On the basis of Sternberg's the theory of mental self-government, this study investigated the differences in students' thinking styles between gifted and average students and the differences in teachers' thinking styles by school quality (gifted school/ average school), sex, professional teaching experience (as measured by duration), and subject of teaching. The subjects were consisted of 191 gifted high school freshmen, 245 average high school freshmen, and 73 teachers. The results of this study were as follows: First, there were statistical differences in many of thinking styles between gifted and average student school. Gifted students scored higher on the legislative, executive, judicial, global, and hierarchic, internal thinking styles. Second, there were no differences in teachers' thinking styles by school quality (gifted school/ average school). Third, teachers with more professional teaching experience (as measured by duration) tended to score higher on the executive, local, and conservative thinking styles. Fourth, there were no differences in teachers' thinking styles by sex and by subject of teaching. To conclude, the thinking styles of students and teachers can play an important role in teaching and learning in schools. Therefore, we need the cognition of thinking styles of students and teachers for the ideal gifted identification and instructional procedures.

  • In this study, we analyzed the perceptions of elementary school students about science learning and lab safety in the affective, behavioral, and cognitive domains. With respect to science learning, students indicated liking science classes more than average, being good at scientific inquiry more than average, and having more scientific knowledge than average. Compared with before the COVID-19 pandemic, student confidence in retaining scientific knowledge had decreased markedly. Of the eight student types in the students' awareness levels about affective·behavioral·cognitive domain, the HHH type-the most ideal-was also the most distributed. Students' preferred science class methods were experimental (72.7%) and nature inquiry classes (23.2%); science knowledge classes were ranked a distant third (4.1%). Preferred class locations were the science lab (58.1%) and different places from time to time (34.4%); the classroom was ranked last (7.5%). With respect to lab safety, most elementary school students did not have experimental classes, but more than half reported understanding how to use experimental equipment. Most students recognized the need to wear safety equipment in the lab. They were not only well aware of the associated physical protection functions, but also of the affective and psychological effects. Most students also recognized that first aid education is necessary, but only 31.5% reported understanding first aid methods. Based on those results, the implications for science learning and lab safety in school are discussed.

  • This study compared the characteristics of scientific emoticons made by general and science-gifted elementary students. To do this, fifth graders (n=53) at a general elementary school in Gyeonggi province and fifth graders (n=35) at a gifted science education institute in Seoul were selected. Scientific emoticons written by the students were compared according to the number and types. Analysis of the results reveal that the science-gifted students made more scientific emoticons than the general students for thirty minutes. In the comparison of the types of scientific emoticons, there were some similarities and significant differences between general students and science-gifted students. Overall, however, it was found that science-gifted students made more various types of scientific emoticons than general students in 'form' aspects (e.g., generative form of text, descriptive form of text, and expressive form of image) and 'information' aspects (e.g., emotion, construction level, excess of curriculum level, scientific disciplines, and use of scientific knowledge) of the texts and the images in the scientific emoticons. The scientific emoticons made by general and science-gifted elementary students included very few misconceptions. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
