  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of explanation in conjunction with gravity and density on students' alternative conceptions for floating and sinking phenomena. The subjects were 140 students of 11th grade in 4 classes of a high school located in Gangwon Province. We divided them in two groups; comparison and experiment. The students of experiment group learned explanation in confection with gravity and density. The students of comparison group learned explanation of pressure as represented in physics textbook. ANCOVAs (analysis of covariance) were conducted using the pretest as a covariance. In items related to characters of matter, 2 items are not significant and only 1 item has significant small effect size (Hedges' g=0.327). In the change of alternative conceptions, there is no meaningful gap between two group. However, in items related to relative weights between object and water, the all items have significant effect sizes (0.286~0.502). In addition, frequency of experiment group's alternative conceptions related to pressure decreases considerably, but comparison group does not. Therefore, the explanation in conjunction with gravity and density suggested in this study can decrease students' alternative conceptions related to floating and sinking phenomena and increase scientific conceptions.

  • The purpose of the present study is to develop and validate an instrument to assess STEM career motivation. We developed 32 items for 7 constructs (i.e. education experience, career value, academic self-efficacy, career self-efficacy, career interest, parents' support, and career motivation) on STEM career motivation based on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT; Lent et al.,1994). 767 first year high school students participated in this study. The items were validated by Messick's framework (1995). In this study, we examined the validity of items in four aspects (i.e. content, substantive, structural and generalizability of validity). Methodologically, we used Rasch analysis, Exploratory factor analysis, confirmative factor analysis based on structural equation modelling. We confirmed that our instrument with 32 items as valid and reliable for measuring the STEM career motivation. In addition, we tested the STEM career motivation model based on SCCT. Our model explained the data well, suggesting that external factors (education experience and parents' support) and cognitive factors (perception of value, self-efficacy and interest) were significantly related to STEM career motivation.

  • The purpose of this study is to indicate the direction of the future university classes in the post-COVID era, comparing and analyzing lecture evaluation of pre and post COVID-19. To this end, 4 yeard data were used from 2018 to 2019 for pre COVID-19 and form 2020 to 2021 data for post COVID-19. The results were as follows. In the case of liberal arts, "assignments" was the word with the highest frequency and degree centrality(DC) regardless of pre and post-COVID-19 In the major, "understanding" appeared as the most important word. The result of the ego network analysis indicated that "video lecture" and "non-face-to-face classes" were difficult and "interaction" between the professor and the students was important. As a results, it is important to reduce the weight of assignments and increase interaction with students in liberal arts classes. In the case of majors, it is necessary to operate face-to-face classes rather than non-face-to-face classes, and to organize the contents of videos without difficulty.

  • This study aims to demonstrate how well SCM analysis, which indicates social cognitive map of categorizing peer subgroups of elementary school students, corresponds with that of teachers. To do this, the subject of this study includes two classes of the 3rd and the 5th grade students in D elementary school in B-gu, Busan city. Over 30 students of each gender in each grade were surveyed with social network questionnaires to collect data. The result of the social network survey was analyzed by SCM 4.0 program to categorize peer subgroups within each class. The categorized peer subgroups were reported to the class teacher. Based on the report, the class teachers observed peer subgroups in classes. After the teachers observed and categorized the students into several peer groups, an analysis was conducted to compare the peer subgrouping by students with that by teachers. The result showed the two were 80% correspondent to each other regardless of gender and grade. If interobserver reliability stays within the range of 80-100%, it is considered reliable. And this leads to the conclusion that peer subgrouping by students' cognition and that by teachers' observation can be regarded quite corresponding. In conclusion, peer subgrouping through SCM is significant when peer subgrouping Korean children, and it appears to be more significant when analyzed considering different variables including gender and grade. Peer subgrouping by girls is shown to be more accurate than that by boys.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest some strategies for integrated science. It also suggests educational strategies through worldview. The directions of most educational policy are based on the deficit model. It is assumed that learners are always lacking in knowledge, and as a result they do not understand properly. However, it is difficult for the public and students to change their attitudes because they do not feel much lacking. For example, the world view of climate change coexists with an optimistic mechanical worldview and an organic and entropy worldview. This study is characterized by the process of expanding awareness of living and fulfillment of knowledge rather than the existing deprivation model. Unconnected knowledge has problems in diversity. It is neither sustainable nor flexible. It is not about eliminating interdisciplinarity but about lowering it. We go into another area with your deep expertise, but we must have a purpose. As a result, not only problem solving but also dynamic feedback of mutual feedback between other domains increases the quality and quantity of knowledge.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the connection between students' errors and prior knowledge as an attempt to design an efficient teaching method in decimal computation. A survey on decimal computations was conducted in two 6th grade elementary school classrooms. Error patterns on decimal computations were analyzed and clinical interviews were conducted with 8 students according to their error patterns. Main errors resulted from the insufficient understanding of prior knowledge such as place value, connection between decimals and fractions, meaning of operations, and computation principles of fractions. In order to help students overcome such obstacles, a teaching experiment was designed in a manner that strengthens a profound understanding of prior knowledge related to decimal computations, and connects such knowledge to actual decimal calculations. This study showed that well-designed lesson plans with base-ten blocks might decrease students' errors by helping them understand decimals and connect their prior knowledge to decimal operations.

  • This study attempted to test whether or not students' collaborative argumentation and explanation activity while using concept mapping did improve understanding on texts. Total of 52 college students participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions. The experiment lasted for two or three weeks and students were tested on comprehension level of a text material that they have studied over the period. As a result, with two independent factors of explanation and collaboration, there was a significant interaction effect without main effects. That is, individual did better when they did have to explain what they were doing. However, this is not the case when students collaborate. Students in the paired condition, they did better when they do not have to explain what they were doing with concept maps. This study showed efficiency with using computerized software does not always guarantee higher understanding on text materials. Instructional contexts and variables, collaboration and explanation, needs to be considered. Collaborating with others and explaining their own learning processes should be carefully designed when they are combined with concept mapping contexts. How to minimize learning obstacles from discussing ideas with others are a critical issue for future research.

  • Learning progressions (LP), which describe how students may develop more sophisticated understanding over a defined period of time, can inform the design of instructional materials and assessment by providing a coherent, systematic measure of what can be regarded as "level appropriate." We developed LPs for the nature of matter for grades K-16. In order to empirically test Korean students, we revised one of the constructs and associated assessment items based on Korean National Science Standards. The assessment was administered to 124 Korean secondary students to measure their knowledge and submicroscopic representations, and to assign them to a level of learning progression for the particle nature of matter. We characterized the level of students' understanding and models of the particle nature of matter, and described how students interpret various representations of atoms and molecules to explain scientific phenomena. The results revealed that students have difficulties in understanding the relationship between the macroscopic and molecular levels of phenomena, even in high school science. Their difficulties may be attributed to a limited understanding of scientific modeling, a lack of understanding of the models used to represent the particle nature of matter, or limited understanding of the structure of matter. This work will inform assessment and curriculum materials development related to the fundamental relationship between macroscopic, observed phenomena and the behavior of atoms and molecules, and can be used to create individualized learning environments. In addition, the results contribute to scientific research literature on learning progressions on the nature of matter.
