  • More than 100 bridges in Korea have been annually collapsed or badly damaged by the scouring around bridge piers, particularly in the flood season. To prevent from such a tragedy, the fundamental study on the bridge scouring is required, which is essential not only to estimate the scour depth with reliability but to take it into consideration in its design. However, it is not easy to find out the physical scour mechanism since many factors on the scour are coupled with. Moreover, there exists none of the measured data sufficiently for the primary research on the bridge scour depths. In this study the field measurements are carried out to provide the fundamental data for the research and the design. Scouring depth, pier width, flow depth, and the approaching velocity and degree of pier nose are measured broadly in small and medium streams. From these measurements the present situation on bridge scours can be understood and some of important factors to affect the stability of bridges are analyzed.

  • Excavation works on stream beds have been done for various reasons including aggregate collection, sediment dredging, bridge constructions, or laying pipes under the ground. These activities may cause significant loadings of SS (suspended solids) resulting in water pollution and other detrimental effects to the surrounding environment. This research investigates application potential of a fickian diffustion model, derived from two dimensional advection-diffusion equation through some simplifying assumptions, as a planning tool for the estimation of SS loadings from excavation works and evaluation fo pollution prevention measures in case that sophisticated numerical simulation models are not applicable due to various practical reasons. Through a case study of the Juncheon stream in the Donghae City on the Kangwondo Province, this study demonstrates applicability of the fickian diffustion model as a practical method for the preliminary estimation of Ss loadings from excavation works and evaluation of performance of fabrics made of synthetic fiber for the reduction of downstream SS concentration with deficient field data.

  • Geology and terrain of Imha basin has a very weak characteristics to soil erosion, so much soil particles flow into Imha reservoir and bring about high density turbid water when it rains a lot. Especially, since the agricultural area of Imha basin is mainly located in river boundary, Imha reservoir has suffered from turbid water by soil erosion. Therefore, it is important to estimate the influence of soil erosion to establish efficient management of water-pollutant buffering zone for the reduction of turbid water. By applying GIS-based RUSLE model, this study can acquire 12.23% that is the ratio of soil erosion in water-pollutant buffering zone and is higher than area-ratio (9.95%) of water-pollutant buffering zone. This is why the area-ratio of agricultural district (27.24%) in water-pollutant buffering zone is higher than the area-ratio of agricultural district (14.96%) in Imha basin. Also as the result of soil erosion in sub-basin, Daegok basin shows highest soil erosion in water-pollutant buffering zone, second is Banbyeon_10 basin and last is Seosi basin.

  • Water quality in the longitudinal and cross section was measured and analyzed at Dal stream. The change of water quality was compared with the change of discharge at the important points. When discharge was increased by rainfall, the concentration of BOD was decreased and the concentrations of TN and TP were increased. The correlation coefficient of BOD, TN, TP showed large with the water velocity and depth in the Case 2 that discharge was increased. Rainfall had much influenced in water quality because of moving the nonpoint source to the channel. Water velocity was analyzed by numerical model(Surface water Modeling System). Velocity was comparatively fast in the upstream that had a steep slope and narrow channel. The characteristics of pollution transfer was simulated in 2-dimensional channel, the pollution diffused rapidly to the center of flow in the main channel. Flow had much influenced in diffusion of pollution.

  • 2-D and 3-D resistivity surveys were carried out at the Deok-In2 levee during the period of arid and rainy seasons to assess the waterproof effectiveness of sheet pile and grouting sections and detect the location of pipings. Inverted resistivity sections clearly indicated the boundaries of sheet pile and grouting sections and the locations of pipings observed at the ground surface. Besides, GPR survey was carried out to verify the rear cavity of culvert in levee which is thought to be the major cause of levee breakdown, But the quality of GPR data was very poor due to the steel reinforcements buried in the culvert. Because it is not easy to apply various geophysical surveys upon concrete structures, newly designed hydraulic response test was proposed to assess the continuity of rear cavity of culvert in this study.

  • Hydraulic and hydrological flood routing methods are commonly used to analyze temporal and spatial flood influences of flood wave through a river reach. Hydrological flood routing method has relatively more simple and reasonable performance accuracy compared to the hydraulic method. Storage constant used in Muskingum method widely applied in hydrological flood routing is very similar to the travel time. Focusing on this point, in this study, we estimate the travel time from HEC-RAS results to estimate storage constant, and develop a non-linear regression equation for the travel time using reach length, channel slope, and discharge. The estimated flow by Muskingum model with storage constant of nonlinear equation is compared with the flow calculated by applying the HEC-RAS 1-D unsteady flow simulation. In addition, this study examines the effect on the weighting factor changes and interval reach divisions; peak discharge increases with the bigger weighting factor, and RMSE decreases with the fragmented division.

  • Natural river channels usually have a deep section and one or two floodplains, which is called a compound channel. As the general method in the compound channel overestimates the discharge capacity, the momentum transfer due to interaction between the main channel flow and flow over its floodplain must be considered. Scale model experiments are performed for the rectangular main channel with an asymmetrical floodplain. Firstly, velocities are measured at various section grids. Secondary, boundary shear stresses are calculated from velocity distributions. Lastly, in order to determine the apparent shear force, the shear stress distributions are integrated along the wetted perimeter for the full cross-section and equated to the total weight force in the flow direction. The hydraulic characteristics in a compound channel are closely examined with the scales of length, velocity, boundary shear stress, and apparent shear force which are described with the various relationships.

  • Data were collected in Lake Daecheong from March 1997 to October 2002 and used to understand an annual change of water environmental factors and trophic states. The surface water temperature was ranged from $3.2^{\circ}C$ to $33.1^{\circ}C$ In the middle of February, water temperature was the lowest. Turbidity was ranged from 0.1 to 203.5 NTU, but the values of above 30 NTU were only measured at site 1. The total mean values of COD and Chl a were $3.6{\pm}1.4\;mg\;O_2\;L^{-1}$, $9.3{\pm}12.8\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$respectively. The concentrations of TP and TN were ranged from 0.14 to 5.09 mg N $L^{-1}$, 1 to $247\;{\mu}g\;P\;L^{-1}$ respectively. The total mean value of TN/TP ratio was $98.7{\pm}56.2$. The trophic states were ranged from mesotrophic to eutrophic in Lake Daecheong.
