A study on the Stream Piracy at Subunchi in Jangsu-Gun, Jeonlabuk-Do, Korea (전북 장수군 수분치의 하천쟁탈에 관한 연구)

  • Stream piracy is one of the dynamic geomorphic processes in the mountainous area. If many stream piracies were concentrated in a certain region, the concentrated distribution of those might reflects the geological structure and tectonic movements of that region. In this study, the stream piracies identified in the lower areas between the Chiri and the Deokyoo mountainous areas were analyzed in relation with the tectonic line from Kwangju to Pohang and the so-called Hansan Mountains. The stream piracy at the Subunchi occurred between the lower-altitude, higher-gradient upper reach of the Seomjin-River flowing on the lower-level basin and the higher-altitude, lower-gradient upper reach of the Geum-River flowing on the higher-level basin. The geomorphic evidences concerning the stream piracy and the human responses to the headward erosion might be found in the vicinity of stream piracy site. Together with the Deunbongsaem(the source fountain of Geum-River), the Subunchi at which the geomorphic processes of stream piracy could be identified in a small area will be a good site for the geography education as well as the geo-tourism.

  • 대병분지는 경남 합천군 대병면에 소재한 소규모의 산간분지이다. 분지 바닥의 고도는 약 250m이며, 남쪽과 서쪽은 높은 산지로 연결되나 북쪽과 동쪽은 황강 본류와 지류의 계곡과 급경사를 이루고 있어 고원 상의 지형을 이루고 있다. 분지 내에는 3곳에서 곡중분수계가 나타난다. 이 중 하나는 하천쟁탈로 형성된 풍극 상에 위치하는 것으로 판단되는데, 이를 증명할 지형학적 증거로는 다음과 같다. (중략)

Study on Types and Distributional Properties of Abandoned Channels in Korea (우리나라의 구하도 유형과 분포 특성)

  • The types, distributional and shape properties of abandoned channels in Korea are classified and examined. There are 409 abandoned channels in Korea and they can be classified into the 6 types such as the incised meander cutoff, stream piracy, distributary, artificial incised meander neck-cutoff, channel straightening of free meander and distributary streams. The abandoned channels by incised meander neck-cutoff showing the most frequency with 266, have the topographical properties of high altitude and steep relief and frequently distribute in Gangwon and Gyeonbuk Province and in the upper reaches of main stream of Nakdong-River, and Dal-River and Pyeongchang-River, tributaries of Namhan-River. The most frequency areas of abandoned channels by distributary, channel straightening of free meander and distributary streams are the lower reaches of Namhan-River and main stream in the lower reaches of Nakdong-River, Mangyeong-River and Yeongsan-River, and Geumho-River, respectively. The abandoned channles by incised meandering neck-cutoff and stream piracy are relatively used as farmlands or forests due to the high altitude and relative altitude from the river bed.

Drainage Derangement and Revision by the Formation of Cheolwon-Pyeonggang Lava Plateau in Chugaryeong Rift Valley, Central Korea (추가령 열곡의 철원-평강 용암대지 형성에 따른 하계망 혼란과 재편성)

  • In Chugaryeong rift valley, lava plateau formation by the fissure eruption had vanished original landforms and effected on drainage derangement and revision. 4 rivers including Namdae-cheon, Bukhan-gang, Imjin-gang and Hantan-gang watersheds have shared Cheolwon-Pyeonggang lava plateau, that is, ownerless watershed. Main agency of the dividing process are central-eruption volcanic peaks such as Orisan(453m) and 680 Peak. Especially, Orisan has played the role of divide point for 4 watersheds. In the lower-relief plateau zone, complex drainage system have caused continually river capture between neighboring watersheds. In more elevated range slope, river capture have proceeded to headward erosion. Hydrogeomorphologically, lava-filled valley has initiated decrease of the original size of flood plain, maybe, causing higher capability of inundation by heavy rains, and then more active dissection of lava plateau layer.

Formative Ages and Processes by Types of Natural Abandoned Channels in Korea (우리나라 자연 구하도의 유형별 형성시기와 형성과정)

  • The formative ages and processes of five natural abandoned channels in three types in Korea are studied. The former meandering channel in Seongsandong, Uljin-gun was abandoned due to the neck-cutoff of incised meander, Wangpi River in approximately 2.5~2.6ka and the abandoned channel in Bulyeong Temple, Uljin-gun was formed by the neck-cutoff of Wangpi River in approximately 90ka. Deduced from these results, it is judged to favorable for formation of abandoned channels by incised meander cutoff in interglacial or interstadial stages that had a better condition for meander cutoff because of active lateral erosion. Due to the corrosion of limestone joints in the underground of ridges between Hwangji River and Cheolam River, the channel in Gumumso, Taebaek-si was abandoned by the stream piracy connecting and combining the rivers into a limestone cave in approximately 40ka and higher lower reaches of Dong River than Banbyeon River in Seonbawi, Yeongyang-gun was turned to the abandoned channel throughout the stream piracy between the rivers in approximately 1.4ka. During Last Glacial Maximum in Jangcheon-ri, Chungju-si, Namhan River was divided into the eastern and western tributaries due to the alluvial island in approximately 10ka and then the western tributary was abandoned recently.

Geomorphological Processes and Changes of Waterfalls formed by Channel Avulsion (하도 변위에 의한 폭포의 형성과 변화)

  • The waterfall can be formed by difference between the height of up and down part in new channel, is formed by channel avulsion that rapidly changing of river channel course. This study described types and processes of waterfalls by channel avulsion, and analyzed rates and factors of waterfall recession, on object to 7 waterfalls in South Korea. Bulyeong falls at Uljin-gun, Yongchu falls at Yeongdeok-gun, Jikyeon falls at Yanggu-gun and Gwangpum falls at Uljin-gun are formed by natural incised meander cutoff. Samhyeongje falls at Taebaek-si and Guryong falls are formed by river capture processes, and Palbong falls at Chungju-si is formed by artificial channel cutting for farm land secured. The locations of waterfalls gradually moved to upstream over time by head erosion. The recession rates were measured by 3~4m/ka on Bulyeong falls, Yongchu falls, Jikyeon falls and Samhyeongje falls, to estimate of formation age. Recession rates of these 4 waterfalls were analyzed that have clearly positive correlations with drainage area, precipitation, corrosion and weathering capability of bedrock, and initial height of waterfall.

River Terraces and Geomorphic Development of Subi Basin, Yeongyang (하안단구와 수비분지의 지형발달)

  • Subi basin is located at the crestline of Taebaek mountains. This paper aims to elucidate the geomorphic development of Subi basin through the analysis of river terraces built in Wangpi-cheon and Banbyeon-cheon. Wangpi-cheon flows northeastward from Subi basin, and Banbyeon-cheon flows southward at the west of Subi basin. Absolute age of terrace is measured by means of OSL methodology, long profile of Wangpi-cheon is made up with 10m interval contour line, and the elevation above river bed of high terraces is measured at the end part of terrace. The results are as follow: Firstly, high river terraces of Subi basin, Wangpi-cheon and Banbyeon-cheon are formed about 40 kyr(MIS 3) being interstadial stage of last glacial period. Secondly, the elevation above river bed of high terraces of Wangpi-cheon and Banbyeon-cheon tends to increase toward upstream. It means that the uplift of Taebaek Mountains influences considerably the formation of their terraces. Thirdly, the elevation above river bed of high terraces at the reach from Seomchon to Suha-ri of Wangpi-cheon tends to decrease toward upstream. This section is captured from Banbyeon-cheon flowing in the opposite direction. River piracy has occurred from the time of formation of Suha-ri high terrace to the time of formation of Hantee wind gap. Finally, for fluvial system of Wangpi-cheon to establish dynamic equilibrium, topographic axis will move toward Banbyeon-cheon.

The Drainage and Irrigation System Developed on the Karstic Uvala: The Case of Kwangduk-ri, Nam-myeon, Jungseon-gun, Kangwon-do (카르스트 우발라에 발달한 수리시설에 관한 연구: 강원도 정선군 남면 광덕리를 사례로)

  • Uvala is one of the geographic features which have been discussed very actively in the field of Karst geomorphology, but most researches in Korea have been staying at the level which uvala were discussed from the viewpoint of the Karst cycle. In this study, the geomorphological characteristics of Kwangduck-ri Uvala will be identified on the basis of the various definitions, and the irrigation systems which have been developed during 250 years will be analysed using a number of data, such as interviews, statistical data, maps, air-photos, especially topographical analysis from GIS. It is concluded that the site of Kwangduck-ri Uvala would have shown the genuine history to adapt and overcome the obstacles of harsh karst environment and to make the stable agricultural and irrigation system in the high plateau karst area.
