  • Aggregate resources in Korea are expected to run out owing to an increase in development demand and construction investment. Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), extracted from waste concrete, have a lower quality than natural aggregates. However, RCA can produce concrete similar in quality to the normal concrete by aggregate pretreatment, use of admixtures, and quality control. RCA are most suitable for use in precast concrete products such as sidewalk blocks and revetment blocks. Herein, the feasibility of producing revetment blocks using recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), similar in quality to normal concrete, was analyzed. The amount of RCA was varied, and moderate high early strength cement and steam curing were used to produce the concrete test blocks. In the block test, the load resistance characteristics of the blocks were evaluated to determine optimal RAC and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebar compositions. Thus, the variable that reduced the cement content was determined at the same level as that of natural aggregate concrete by the control of steam curing. In the concrete block test, although this depends on the reinforcement ratio, the RAC block exhibited the same or better performance than a normal concrete block. Therefore, the low quality of RCA in RAC is no longer a problem when concrete mixing and curing are controlled and appropriate reinforcement is used.

  • In this study, based on the temperature distribution and the spalling histories those obtained in the companion paper, the thermal stress and moments of underground box structure were estimated. Additionally, the ultimate sectional moment considering with the thermal nonlinearities of material were estimated and the load carrying capacity of underground box structure was also obtained. As results, the load carrying capacity of negative moment part was dominated by thermal moment that come from thermal gradient of the section. However, the load carrying capacity of the positive moment part was rules by the yield stress of rebar that exposed to the high temperature induced spalling phenomena.

  • In this study, a five-story steel frame was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to evaluate the effects of the beam-column connection on the structural behavior. The connections were designed as fully rigid and semi-rigid. The fiber model was used to describe the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and the column, the power model for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection and the three-parameter model for the hysteretic behavior of the steel beam, column, and connection. The structure was idealized as separate 2-D frames and as connected 2-D frames. The peak ground accelerations of four earthquake records were modified in a time-history analysis for the levels of the mean return period and for the maximum base-shear force in a pushover analysis. The top story displacement, base-shear force, story drift, demanded ductility ratio for the semi-rigid connection, maximum bending moment of the column, beam, and connection, and distribution of the plastic hinge were examined in the time-history analysis. The frame with the semi-rigid connection yielded a lower base-shear force, less magnitude, and increasing ratio in the bending moment of the column, beam, and connection than the frame with a fully rigid connection. The TSD connection was deemed to have secured the economy and safety of the sample structure that was subjected to seismic excitation for the Korean design level.

  • A stochchastic analysis procedure of generating floor response spectra for proportionally damped linear systems subject to earthquake loading is presented. Theories of random vibration and mode acceleration method are used in the formulation of governing equations. The structure-oscillator interaction is not considered. It is assumed that the input motions and oscillator responses are stationary Gaussian processes with mean zero. The nonstationary characteristics of earthquake motion are incorporated in the peak factor which is based on Vanmarcke's theory. Floor response spectra for both resonance and non-resonance cases are calculated under the assumption that the peak factors for structure and oscillator are equal to that for ground response spectrum. The validity of this method is demonstrated by comparing the results obtained by proposed method with those by time history analyses. The results obtained by this method are conservative and accurate with tolerable precision. This method saves much computing time compared with time history analysis method.

  • Two acceleration methods, an effective force method (or inertia method) and a large mass method, have been applied for performing time history seismic analysis. The acceleration methods for uncracked structures have been verified via previous studies. However, no study has identified the validity of these acceleration methods for cracked piping. In this study, the validity of the acceleration methods for through-wall cracked piping is assessed via time history implicit dynamic elastic seismic analysis from the viewpoint of linear elastic fracture mechanics. As a result, it is identified that both acceleration methods show the same results for cracked piping if a large mass magnitude and maximum time increment are adequately selected.

  • Reliability analysis of jacket type offshore wind turbine (OWT) support structure under extreme ocean environmental loads was performed. Limit state function (LSF) of OWF support structure is defined by using structural dynamic response at mud-line. Then, the dynamic response is expressed as the static response multiplied by dynamic response factor (DRF). Probabilistic distribution of DRF is found from response time history under design significant wave load. Band limited beta distribution is used for internal friction angle of ground soil. Wind load is obtained in the form of thrust force from commercial code called GH_Bladed and then, applied to tower hub as random load. In a numerical example, the response surface method (RSM) is used to express LSF of jacket type support structure for 5MW OWF. Reliability index is found using first order reliability method (FORM).

  • Various types of external loads can be applied to the tunnel structure. In a shield tunnel, the vibration from the train may affect the behavior of the adjacent ground. In this study, the railway-induced vibration was estimated and applied to the shield tunnel through 3D numerical simulation. The effective stress analysis based on the finite difference method and Finn model was performed to investigate the potential of liquefaction below the tunnel. Furthermore, pore water pressure and displacement were monitored on a time domain; consequently, the liquefaction potential and dynamic response of the shield tunnel were analyzed. Consequently, it is confirmed that the generation of excess pore water pressure by train-induced vibrating load, however, the amount does not meaningfully affect the potential of liquefaction.

  • A three-dimensional time-domain calculation method is of crucial importance in prediction of the motions and wave loads of a ship advancing in a severe irregular sea. The exact solution of the free surface wave-ship interaction problem is very complicated because of the essentially nonlinear boundary conditions. In this paper, an approximate body nonlinear approach based on the three-dimensional time-domain forward-speed free-surface Green function has been presented. The Froude-Krylov force and the hydrostatic restoring force are calculated over the instantaneous wetted surface of the ship while the forces due to the radiation and scattering potentials over the mean wetted surface. The time-domain radiation and scattering potentials have been obtained from a time invariant kernel of integral equations for the potentials which are discretized according to the second-order boundary element method (Hong and Hong 2008). The diffraction impulse-response functions of the Wigley seakeeping model advancing in transient head waves at various Froude numbers have been presented. A simulation of coupled heave-pitch motion of a long rectangular barge advancing in regular head waves of large amplitude has been carried out. Comparisons between the linear and the approximate body nonlinear numerical results of motions and wave loads of the barge at a nonzero Froude number have been made.

  • Many uncertainties affecting to the structural behavior of prestressed concrete (PSC) bridges reinforced with the un bonded external tendons are analyzed on the basis of the analytical method introduced in the companion paper. Many design parameters, which must be considered in design procedure, such as friction slip at the deviators, number of deviators, time-dependent deformations of concrete, relaxation of tendon and influence of loading history in PSC bridges are reviewed, and a lot of valuable results are obtained through this parametric study. In advance, the structural responses according to the external tendon profiles are analyzed to grasp if an optimum tendon profile depends on the applied loading type, and the obtained results show that the most stable structural response is revealed when the locations of deviators are coincident with the loading points.

  • Considering that the weight of a biaxial hollow slab system is not increased with an incremental increase in its thickness, and that the flexural stiffness of a biaxial hollow slab is not significantly lower than that of a general solid slab, there has been a growing need for biaxial hollow slab systems, because long span structures are in great demand. In a long span structure, the problem of vibration of floor slabs frequently occurs, and the dynamic characteristics of a biaxial hollow slab system are quite different from the conventional floor systems. Therefore, in this study, the floor vibration of a biaxial hollow slab system subjected to walking load is investigated in comparison with a conventional floor slab system. For the efficiency of time history analysis, an equivalent plate slab model that can precisely represent the dynamic behavior of a biaxial hollow slab system is used. From the analytical results, it was determined that vibration of a biaxial hollow slab system subjected to walking load is evaluated as "office-level vibration," according to the classifications of the architectural institute of Japan and ANSI.
