  • In this study, loading tests and a strength evaluation of the bogie frame were conducted to verify the structural safety of the bogie system in an intermodal tram, which runs with cars on a road track. The loads were calculated taking into account the features of the road track with many sharp curves and steep gradients, which are different from the track of conventional railway. They were compared with the loads specified in the previous standard specifications. After the comparison, it was confirmed that the loads acting on the bogie system operating on a road track are slightly different from the specified loads. The specified vertical load of the standard specification for all kinds of trains is conservative, but the specified lateral and longitudinal loads are less than the calculated loads. The application of the actual loads was proven to be reasonable in the development of a new railway system. Based on the defined loads, the bogie frame was fabricated on which strain gauges were attached. It was set on the large loading frame so that the stresses could be measured when loads were applied by hydraulic actuators. After measuring the stresses, it was shown that they were below the allowable stress, which verified the structural safety of the bogie frame.

  • Type A carrier structures that support blocks or equipment gradually deform over time with load changes, reducing the area in contact with the block and changing the load pattern from distributed to concentrated during construction work in the shipyard. This phenomenon has the potential to misrepresent actual service loads. In particular, A carriers are often used by small manufacturers, who often do not have specialized engineering capabilities, necessitating the development of a method for easy calculation of carrier safe working load. This study proposes a quick evaluation method for the long-term safe working load of Type A carriers, to predict the plastic deformation and safety issues resulting from changes in load distribution. Based on the results of finite element analysis (beam and shell modeling) of the centralized load, beam-theory was modified to propose a method for determining the distributed load conditions of the A-carrier. In beam modeling, the theoretical value was multiplied by a correction factor of 0.73 for concentrated loads and 0.69 for distributed loads to obtain a safe working load. For shell modeling, a correction factor of 0.75 can be used for concentrated loads and 0.69 for distributed loads. This study can serve as a basis for improving the safety of shipbuilding, enabling quick and effective decisions for determining safe working loads in actual working environments.

  • Since the Fukushima nuclear accident, several researchers are extensively studying the effect of torsion on the piping systems In nuclear power plants. Piping installations in power plants with a circumferential crack can be operated under combined loading conditions such as bending and torsion. ASME Code provides flaw evaluations for fully plastic fractures using limit load criteria for the structural integrity of the cracked pipes. According to the recent version of Code, combined loadings are provided only for the membrane and bending. Even though actual operating conditions have torsion loading, the methodology for evaluating torsion load is not established. This paper provides the results of limit load analyses by using finite element models for circumferentially cracked pipes under pure bending, pure torsion, and combined bending and torsion with tension. Theoretical limit load solutions based on net-section fully plastic criteria are suggested and verified with the results of finite element analyses.

  • One of the most important factors accounting for the structural capacity of concrete pavement is load transfer efficiency. Load transfer efficiency is affected by slab temperature gradient, construction of dowel bars, degree of aging, and crack width. The purpose of this study is to determine the patterns of load transfer efficiency of concrete pavement; to determine the factors that affect the load transfer efficiency; and to present the proper measuring method of load transfer efficiency. As a result from this study, load transfer efficiency was affected primarily by the average temperature in concrete slab. Load transfer efficiency decreased with decreasing temperature and increasing crack width. For the sections with dowel bars, there were little differences in load transfer efficiency regardless of temperature changes. For the sections without dowel bars, however, there on great losses of load transfer efficiency at low temperatures. For the old pavement, even in the sections with dowel bars, the load transfer efficiency reduced as the temperature dropped For the sections in this study, 1.4% reduction of the load transfer efficiency was observed for each $1^{\circ}C$ drop in the slab temperature.

  • In order to obtain the dynamic response behavior of the rock subjected to blasting loading, a shock-proof high sensitivity impact sensor which can measure high frequency dynamic force and strain events should be adopted. Because the impact sensors which uses quartz and piezoelectric element are costly, generally the strain measurement-based impact (SMI) sensors are applied to high speed loading devices. In this study, dynamic Brazilian tension tests of granitic rocks was conducted using the Nonex Rock Cracker (NRC) reaction driven-high speed loading device which adopts SMI sensors. The dynamic response of the granite specimens were monitored and the intermediate strain rate dependency of Brazilian tensile strengths was discussed.

  • This study was carried out to select proper loading speed for deformation strength ($S_D$) of asphalt mixtures. Kim test using loading head of diameter(40mm) with radius(10mm) was conducted to measure $S_D$ in different loading speed (10mm/min, 30mm/min, 50mm/min, 70mm/min) and wheel tracking test was also conducted. The regression analyses between the So values and WT results were carried out by loading speeds. Higher $S_D$ was observed as increasing loading speed. This means that loading speed is a high influencing factor on $S_D$. The loading speed of 30mm/min was found as an optimum for better correlation with WT results than any other speeds from the regression analysis between $S_D$ and wheel tracking test results. $S_D$ value measured at other loading speed than 30mm/min has to apply the conversion coefficients.

  • When arch ribs are subjected unsymmetrical load, buckling strength Is lower than strength of arch ribs subjected symmetrical load. However, A few study about the buckling strength of arch ribs subjected unsymmetrical load is performed compare with study about arch ribs subjected symmetrical load. Several researchers(Deutch : 1940, Chang : 1973, Harrison : 1982) studied about arch ribs subjected unsymmetrical load and they found that unsymmetrical loading reduces the critical buckling load. But, their results are limited parabolic arch ribs. This paper focuses on circular arch ribs subjected to unsymmetrical loading. The result shows that the ratio of live and dead load length to cause smallest critical buckling load of arch ribs is $0.6{\sim}0.7$ under geometric nonlinear condition and $0.5{\sim}0.6$ under both material and geometrical nonlinear conditions.

  • Civil aviation regulation such as FAR and loads analysis procedure based on this was explained, and loads analysis procedure and results for Smart UAV was presented for application case. For loads analysis, applicable regulations and loads conditions should be prepared in advance, and modeling for aerodynamics, weight, and structure should be performed. Panel method is usually adopted for aircraft loads analysis to obtain aerodynamic loads. In this study, ARGON which is multidisciplinary fixed wing aircraft design software co-developed by KARI and TsAGI was used for loads analysis. ARGON can be utilized for flutter and stress analysis as well as for flight and ground loads analysis. In this paper, flight loads analysis of 4-seater canard airplane was performed with ARGON and that results were presented.

  • This paper presents the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness which represents the influence of the stiffness change such as the addition of elements, the deletion of elements, and/or the partial change of element stiffness. The reanalysis of structure using the equivalent load improves the efficiency very much because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix, which needs a large amount of computation to calculate, is reused in the reanalysis. In this paper, the concept of the equivalent load for the element stiffness is described and some numerical examples are provided to verify it.

  • Excessive thrust acting on the rotor of pump can cause the damage of pump or the decrease of pump lifetime. Therefore, for ensuring the safety of LOX pump of a liquid rocket engine, the thrust of pump rotor is estimated by similarity tests. Axial thrust is indirectly measured by an axial thrust measurement unit positioned outside pump. Radial thrust is calculated based on pressure distribution of volute scroll. As a result, axial and radial thrust are increased when the flowrate of pump decreases. However, both thrusts do not affect the stability of pump rotor since their values are not large.
