The load distribution and deformation of pile subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance that is closely related to the ratio of pile diameter to soil modulus $(D/E_s)$ and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load $(R_s/Q)$, in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the coupled load-transfer method. The proposed analytical method that takes into account the soil coupling effect was developed using a modified Mindlin's point load solution. Through comparisons with field case studies, it was found that the proposed method in the present study estimated reasonable load transfer behavior of pile and coupling effects due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.

In this study, the dynamic load transfer function, which is necessary for analyzing a pile installed by a vibro hammer, was determined by comparing the results of the analyses and instrumented tests. The static load transfer function was modeled by the Ramberg-Osgood model through an analytical method before determining the dynamic load transfer curve. The parameters of the Ramberg-Osgood model were correlated with the N value of the standard penetration test and average values of the correlation coefficient were 0.97 for the shaft load transfer and 0.98 for the base load transfer. The dynamic load transfer function was simulated using the modified Ramberg-Osgood model. The results showed that there were little differences in the characteristics of dynamic load transfer between the results of the measurement and prediction.
Shear load transfer characteristics of rock-socketed drilled shafts were analyzed. The constant normal stiffness (CNS) direct shear tests were performed to identify the major influencing factors of shaft resistance, i.e., unconfined compressive strength, borehole roughness, normal stiffness, initial confining stress, and material properties. Based on the CNS tests, shear load transfer function of drilled shafts in rocks is proposed using borehole roughness and the geological strength index (GSI), which indicates discontinuity and surface condition of rock mass in Hoek-Brown criterion (1997). The proposed load-transfer function was verified by the load test results of seven rock-socketed drilled test shafts subjected to axial loads. Through comparisons of the results of load tests, it is found that the load-transfer function by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurements, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer of drilled shafts.

Technique for analyzing pile installed by vibratory pile driver was developed and results of analysis obtained from variation of bias weight were studied. It can be seen from load transfer curve for dynamic skin friction that load transfer curve shift to downward as bias weight increases. Shape of load transfer curve for dynamic skin friction becomes closer to shape of coil as the bias weight decreases. Magnitudes of toe resistances were not affected by the bias weight. Shape of load transfer curve for dynamic toe resistance shows the similar tendency as the load transfer curve for skin friction exhibits. Vertical displacement increases as the bias weight increases and the shape of vertical displacement with time shows more distinct shape of wave.
The residual stress on drilled shafts is often neglected. Neglect of the existence of locked-in loads in the shaft is the main reason for conclusions of instrumented tests which suggest that shaft resistance is smaller when the shaft is loaded in tension than when it is loaded in compression. A few researchers studied the residual stress and mentioned that the residual stress is influenced by either the physical expansion/contraction of concrete during the curing or site stratigraphy. In this study, field measurements of residual stress on test shafts were conducted and the factors influencing the residual stress were figured out.
In this study, the analysis of load transition of PHC pile was performed with the static load test, which was driven in deep soft clay layer of MyungJi site in the western area of Pusan. The results of test showed that the range of unit side resistance of pile in sand layer were $7.4t/m^2$ to $23.3t/m^2$ and $6.4t/m^2$ in the soft clay layer, while the unit base resistance was $955t/m^2$ in dense silty sand layer. To select the most reasonable static bearing capacity formular, the field measured values are compared with the calculated ones from the suggested various formular. In the case of side resistance in sand layer, the suggest formular in the Structural Foundation Design Manual by KGS was most reasonable, while in clay layer Railroad Design Manual.
In this study, the load transfer characteristics of the base and skin of drilled shafts were analyzed and the load sharing ratio was calculated by performing a load transfer large-scale model test and three-dimensional numerical analysis considering the similarity of drilled shafts, which is the design target. From the linear behavior of drilled shafts shown in the large-scale model test and 3D numerical analysis results, the skin load transition curve for the design conditions of this study was proposed by Baquelin et al., and the base load transition curve was proposed by Baquelin et al. For the horizontal load transition curve, the formula proposed by Reese et al. was confirmed to be appropriate. The test value was slightly larger than the numerical analysis value for the axial load at the rock socketing, but the load sharing ratio at the rock socketing increased, on average, about 27.8% as the vertical load increased. The analysis value of the vertical settlement of the pile head under the vertical load was evaluated to be slightly smaller than the test value, and the maximum vertical settlement of the pile head in the model test and analysis maximum vertical load was 10.6 mm in the test value and 10.0 mm in the analysis value, and the maximum vertical settlement value at the base of the pile was found to be a test value of 2.0 mm and an analysis value of 1.9 mm. The horizontal displacement at the head of the column (ground surface) and the head of the pile during the horizontal load was found to agree relatively well with the test value and the analysis value. As a result of the model soil test, the horizontal load measured at the maximum horizontal displacement of 38.0 mm was evaluated to be 24,713 kN, and the horizontal load in the numerical analysis was evaluated to be 26,073 kN.
Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) is a soft-ground improvement technique used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of soils. In this study, laboratory tests and 3-D finite element analysis were peformed to investigate the characteristics of load transfer in SCP with an emphasis on free-strain behavior of piles with low replacement ratios in the range of 30 to $50\%$. Through these focused tests and numerical analyses, we proposed a simplified method to analyze the load transfer characteristics of SCP in soft ground. Moreover, it was shown that estimated normal stresses in SCP using the proposed method were in a reasonable agreement with actual values.
Geosynthetic-reinforced and Pile-supported (GRPS) embankment method is widely used to construct structures on soft ground due to restraining residual settlement and their rapid construction. However, effect of cyclic loading has not been established although some countries suggest design methods through many studies. In this paper, cyclic loading tests were conducted to analyze dynamic load transfer characteristics of pile-supported embankment reinforced with geosynthetics. A series of 3 case full scale model tests which were non-reinforced, one-layer-reinforced, two-layer reinforced with geosynthetics were performed on piled embankments. In these series of tests, the height of embankment and pile spacing were selected according to EBGEO (2010) standard in Germany. As a result of the vertical load parts on the pile and on the geosynthetic reinforcement measured separately, cyclic loads transferred by only arching effect decreased with strength geosynthetic-reinforced case. However, final loads on the pile showed no differences among the cases. These results conflict with previous studies that reinforcement with geosynthetics increases transfer load concentrated on piles. In addition, it is observed that the load transferred to pile decreases at the beginning of cycle number due to reduction of arching effected by cyclic loading. Based on these results, transferred mechanism for cyclic load on GRPS system has been presented.
