  • The wind force coefficient of a transmission tower frame shows several characteristics when the section shape, solidity ratio, and wind direction angle are changed. In this study, the wind force characteristics of a transmission tower frame with a basic structure were evaluated using different solidity ratios and wind direction angles in a wind tunnel test. According to the solidity ratio, the size of the structure and the rectangular-frame model of the transmission tower were changed by adding a two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) structure. The transmission tower's rectangular frame was tested by changing the wind direction angle of the 2D-type structure from 0 to $90^{\circ}$ and by changing the wind direction angle of the 3D-type structure from 0 to $45^{\circ}$ Based on the results that were obtained, it can be concluded that the wind force coefficient of a transmission tower frame can be used as preliminary data in deciding the transmission tower's wind load.

  • In this study, the influence of progressive consolidation from the drainage boundary on the subsequent process of consolidation was investigated. Analytical theory and numerical program f3r consolidation of clayey soil were developed based on finite difference method, in which spatial variation of permeability and volume compressibility were implemented. And model ground with normally consolidated clayey soils and a vertical drain at its center were simulated. Various types of soils with different relations between coefficient of volume compressibility and permeability and void ratio were applied. Also numerical simulations based on the properties of the normally consolidated clay at Nakdong River basin and reconstituted kaolinite soil were performed to recognize its practical impact. Consequently, it is found out that retardation of consolidation induced by progressive consolidation is very important to understand consolidation behavior on field conditions and its effect is remarkable at the initial state of consolidation, and increases with plasticity index and applied load.

  • Sand compaction pile (SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which are being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model tests and 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between sand compaction piles and surrounding soft soils. Based on the results obtained, as the area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio increases at the pile point, the settlement decreases, and the relative displacement between column and soil also decreases. It is also found that numerical study is illustrated by good comparison with model test results, and the numerical analysis revealed slip effects which could not be specifically identified in the model tests.

  • In this research stress-strain behavior of composite geocell-soil systems under triaxial condition and the influence of strength due to the presence of geocell were studied. For the research a series of triaxial tests were carried out on sand specimens confined by flexible-walled single rubber cell. The diameter of all rubber cells placed at the center of the soil sample were 50 mm. Three rubber sizes, i.e. 35, 50 and 70 mm height, were applied to the soil specimen and the size of soil specimen was 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height. Three different densities of soil were used for the tests. In general, it was observed that the sand specimen develops an apparent cohesion due to the confinement by the geocell. The magnitude of this cohesion seemed to be dependent to the properties of the geocell material. The test results have shown that the geocell material for this research not only develops the apparent cohesion but also increases the angle of friction whereas geosynthetic material in the references showed only the increase of apparent cohesion. From the application of geocell-soil composites to the hyperbolic model, it was recognized that the determination of the peak strength influences the behavior of the geocell-soil composites.

  • The reliability of hydraulic equipment used in power plants is especially important because failures that occur in the power plant can have a great ripple effect on human lives and financial losses. In this study, specimens using the materials used in the spool and sleeve of hydraulic valves of power plants have been produced, heat-treated, and tested under the precipitation conditions of phosphate ester hydraulic fluid with a variety of conditions. 23 full factorial designs have been applied to evaluate the significance of factors that affect the wear loss of the specimen, specifically, the load, velocity, and temperature. The significance evaluation was performed on the main effects and two-way interactions for wear loss based on the experiment results, and the mathematical equations between the wear loss and the three factors were derived from the analysis results.

  • Conventional total hip joint replacement(THR) surgery requires a long incision and long rehabilitation time. The stem used in THR is inserted into the cancellous bone of the femur where it plays the role of the artificial joint. Minimally invasive surgery(MIS) has been devised to reduce muscle damage to patients. In this study, a mechanical stem was developed on the basis of MISto reduce the incision length through the principle of the gear. The mechanical stem consists of six components. A prototypical model for a mechanical stem was fabricated using an acryl-based polymer, and its workability was confirmed. To actualize the mechanical stem, a three-dimensional Bio-CAD modeling technique was applied. The hip joint area based on computed tomography(CT) was reconstructed. The safety of the mechanical stem by applying more load than the weight of a man under virtual surgery environment conditions was confirmed by finite element analysis.

  • To investigate the safety and stability of a concrete lining, numerous studies have been conducted over the years and several methods have been developed. Most signal processing techniques of NDT have been based on Fourier analysis. However, the application of Fourier analysis to analyze recorded vibrational signal shows results in the frequency domain only, and it is not enough to analyze transient waves precisely. In this study, Wavelet theory was employed for the analysis of non-stationary wave induced by mechanical impact on tunnel concrete lining. The Wavelet transform of transient signals provides a method for mapping the frequency spectrum as a function of time. To verify the availability of Wavelet transform as a time-frequency analysis tool, model experiments have been conducted and the thickness of the concrete lining was estimated based on the proposed theory. From this study, it was found that the contour map by Wavelet transform provides more distinct results than the power spectrum by Fourier transform and it was also found that Wavelet transform was also an effective tool for the analysis of dispersive waves in tunnel concrete linings.

  • The behavior characteristics of underground structures are reported as they are not affected by their dynamic characteristics such as surface structures, but by dynamic characteristics of soil and rock surrounding the underground structures. Therefore, dynamic behavior of surrounding soil and rock dominates the dynamic behavior of the underground structure. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the dynamic response (longitudinal deformation and ovaling deformation) of the underground structure under earthquake loading. The dynamic responses of the underground structures were evaluated with varying earthquake conditions, soil conditions, and structural conditions using conventional closed-form solution of seismic behavior of underground structure. In addition, shaking table tests were conducted to simulate the earthquake loading and the dynamic behavior of the model was analyzed.

  • Abstract By investigating the stress redistribution caused by the preceding cut blasting when applying the pre-splitting method to tunnel round, an attempt was made to find conditions that were favorable for the propagation of cracks in contour holes. The investigation of the direction of minor principal stress in the numerical analysis revealed that the most significant factor affecting the change of the direction was the loading condition, while the core shape, rock type, and tunnel depth seemed to be less important in determining the direction of minor principal stress. Moreover, the number of cracks tended to increase with the increase of deviatoric stress. Through the model test of pre-splitting, it is confirmed that the pre-splitting method taking the stress field into account can reduce the extent of yield zone and has advantage in controlling the direction of crack than the conventional one.

  • In this paper, through the study and consideration of the recently prominent monitoring of cable stayed-bridge, practical but reasonable suggested for the evaluation of the probabilistic safety of the bridges using probable measured data from monitoring measurement system. It is shown in the paper that the live load effects can be evaluated using measured data of cable-stayed bridge and this the realistic probabilistic safety of the cable-stayed bridge could be assessed in term of element reliability and system reliability. As a practical method for the evalution of the system reliability of system cable-stayed bridges partial ETA method is uesd, which can find the critical failure path including combined failure modes of cable, deck and pylon. Compared with the conventional safety analysis method, the propsed approach may be considered as the practical method that shows the considerably actual and reasonable results the system redundancy of the structure.
