  • This study proposes a bridge evaluation system for indivisible permit vehicles such as hydraulic cranes. The permit loads for the bridge evaluation are divided into three categories: routine permit loads, special permit 1 loads, and special permit 2 loads. Routine permit and special permit 1 vehicles are allowed to cross a bridge with normal traffic. For these two permits, the standard lane model in the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code was adopted to consider normal traffic in the same lane. Special permit 2 vehicles are assumed to cross a bridge without other traffic. Structural analyses of two prestressed-beam bridges and two steel box girder bridges were conducted for the proposed permit loads. The rating factors of the four bridges for all permit loads were calculated as sufficiently large values for the moment and shear force so that crossing the bridges can be permitted. A reliability assessment of the bridges was performed to identify the reliability levels for the permit vehicles. It was confirmed that the reliability level of the minimum required strength obtained by the load-resistance factors yields the target reliability index of the design code for the permit vehicles.

  • This paper concerns the effect of lining interface adherence on the lining's load carrying capacity. A series of reduced scale laboratory tests and finite element anlayses were carried out with the aim of gaining insight into the effect of shotcrete lining adherence on the load carrying capacity of double shell lining. The results indicated among other things that the load carrying capacity of a double shell tunnel is significantly affected by the adherence between layers. Also revealed was that for cases with low lining layer adherence stress concentration may occur due to relative movement between the lining layers with this trend being more pronounced with increasing tunnel cover depth. Practical implications from the results of this study are discussed in great detail.

  • This paper concentrates on the nonlinear analysis of the reinforced concrete flexural members under cyclic loading. To develop a nonlinear material model, concrete is treated as an orthotropic nonlinear material and steel is modeled as an elasto-plastic material. The models for hysteresis behavior with stiffness degradation in compression and for crack opening and closing in tension are included. The finite element computer program for the nonlinear analysis of RC flexural members under cyclic loading is developed. The accuracy and reliabihty of the numerical procedure IS demonstrated by the FEM analysis and test results of underreinforced concrete beams.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze lateral displacement behavior of clay layers in case of the banking in soft ground through model tests. Seven model tests varying with thickness of soft clay and loading velocity are performed to correlate between ground heaving and loading velocity. In case of low loading velocity, vertical settlement below loading plate and small ground heaving are obviously observed. In case of the high loading velocity, it is shown that both soil displacement at the end of a loading plate and surface heaving are large. In addition, the calculated displacements show good agreement with three cases of field measurements in clay with high moisture contents so that we can predict the range of heaving area and the amount of heaving.

  • A series of model tests were performed to investigate the soil arching effect in embankments supported by piles with geosynthetics. In the model tests, model piles with isolated cap were inserted through the holes in a steel plate, which could be operated up and down. Then geosynthetics was laid on the pile caps below sand fills. The settlement of soft ground was simulated by lowering the plate. As the plate was lowered, the soil arching was mobilized in the embankments. The deformation of both the sand fills and geosynthetics were captured by camera. Also the loads acting on pile cap and the tensile strain of geosynthetics were monitored by data logging system. Model tests showed that the embankment loads transferred on pile cap by soil arching Increased rapidly with settlement of the soft ground. In case of the absence of geosynthetics, the loads acting on pile caps dropped to residual value after peak value, whereas loads on pile caps gradually increased until constant value in case of geosynthetic-reinforced. This illustrated that reinforcing with the geosynthetics has a good effect to restrain the settlement of embankments. Also, the deformation shape of geosynthetics between pile caps was circular. The embankment loads transferred on pile caps can be estimated by considering both soil arching and tensile strain of geosynthetics in embankments supported by piles with geosynthetics.

  • Recently many studies have been published on application of immediate loaded implants. However, the immediate loading protocol has not been well documented. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the stress distribution between bone-implant interfaces and the effect of implant length in the anterior maxilla using 3 dimensional finite element analyses. The diameter 4.0 mm threaded type implants with different length(8.5 mm, 10.0 mm, 11.5 mm, 13.0 mm, 15.0 mm) were used in this study. The bone quality of anterior maxillary bone block was assumed to D3 bone. Bone-implant interfaces of immediately loaded implant were constructed using a contact element for simulating the non osseointegration status. For simplification of all the processing procedures, all of the material assumed to be homogenous, isotropic, and linearly elastic. The 178 N of static force was applied on the middle of the palatoincisal line angle of the abutment with $120^{\circ}$ angle to the long axis of abutment. Maximum von Mises stress were concentrated on the labial cortical bone of the implant neck area, especially at the cortical-cancellous bone interfaces. Compared the different length, highest peak stress value was observed at the 8.5 mm implants and the results indicated a tendency towards favorable stress distribution on the bone, when the length was increased. Presence of cortical bone was very important to immediate loading, and it appears that implants of a length more than 13 mm are preferable for immediate loading at the anterior maxilla.

  • The thesis is for gust factor needing when calculate the wind resistance design. For the gust factor, to the membrane structural model, carry through the wind tunnel test and the static load test. Therefore, at first through the tensile test of the fabric material, designate the material of the membrane structural model. Then, to saddle, wave, arch and point four kinds of basic shape membrane structural models, carry on the wind tunnel test, determine their dynamic load and distortion on lateral direction. Finally, according to distort situation of the membrane structure in the wind tunnel test, carry on the static load experiment outside of the wind tunnel, calculate static load which corresponding with distort. According to dynamic load and the static load, figure out gust factor of these kinds of basic membrane structure.

  • Load transfer efficiency (LTE) reflects the structural performance of doweled and undoweled joints of Jointed Concrete Pavement (JCP). A 3-dimensional (3-D) model of JCP was built using ABAQUS software in this study. Three concrete slabs were placed on bonded sublayers composed of a base and subgrade. Spring elements were used to connect the adjacent slabs at joints. Different spring constants were input to the model to simulate different joint stiffness of the concrete pavement. The LTE of the joint increased with an increase of the spring constant. The effects of material properties and geometric shape on the behavior of JCP were analyzed using different elastic modulus and thickness of the slab and base in the modeling. The results showed the elastic modulus of the subgrade affected the behavior of the slab and LTE more than that of the base and the thickness of the slab and base. The effects of a negative temperature gradient on the behavior of the slab and LTE were more than that of positive and zero temperature gradients. Joints with low stiffness were more sensitive to the temperature gradient of the slab.

  • In this study, we constructed a database by collecting field pullout test data of the soil nailing using pressurized grouting, and suggested a method to estimate the ultimate pullout resistance using nonlinear regression analysis to overcome the problems of ultimate pullout resistance estimation using graphical methods. The load-displacement curve estimated by nonlinear regression showed a very high correlation with the field pullout test data. Estimated ultimate pullout load by nonlinear regression method was average 29% higher than estimated ultimate pullout load using previous graphical method. A sigmoidal growth model was found to be the best-fitting nonlinear regression model against rapid pullout failure. Further, an asymptotic regression model was found to be the best fit against progressive nail pullout. The unit ultimate skin friction suggested in this research reflected in the domestic geotechnical characteristics and the specifications of the pressurized grouting method. This research is expected to contribute towards establishing an independent design standard for the soil nailing by providing solutions to the problems that occur when using design charts based on foreign research.

  • Suction anchors are used for floating structures because they have advantages in installation and stability. Recently, the demand for floating structures requiring low allowable displacement has increased. Thus, it is strongly suggested that the displacement of the suction anchor be evaluated. However, conventional studies regarding suction anchors have concentrated on the capacity of the anchor, and research on the displacement of the anchor is limited. In particular, rotation is the primary behavior of a suction anchor subjected to an inclined load, and related information has been insufficient. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to investigate the rotation behavior of a suction anchor via centrifuge model tests. The experimental parameters are the inclination of the pull-out load, anchor dimensions, and aspect ratio. The rotation values of suction anchors were compared using a series of load-rotation curves. The results show that the inclination of the load has a dominant influence on the rotation behavior of the suction anchor.
