  • study deals with the reliability assesment for the 5-year phases of a suspension bridge construction in Korea. The main objectives of this study are; (1) the evaluation of the reliability of a suspension bridge by considering an ultimate limit state for the fracture of main cable wires, (2) the determination of the critical phases among 28 construction stages for the deck erection, and (3) the evaluation of the reliability of the limit state for the erection control during construction stages. The research and the design of the suspension bridge have been focused on the state of construction mainly based on empirical data. Based on the recent survey of the distribution of accidents in Korean railways, over 80% of the accidents related to the uncertainties in human error, planning, design, materials and loads during construction have ben reported before the completion of construction. While many researches have evaluated the safety of bridges, the uncertainties in the construction phases have not been well treated in a guidelines or a specifications. An improved adaptive response surface method is used for the risk assessment in the construction phases of the target suspension bridge.

  • The paper presents a reliability-based method that can capture the impact of uncertainty of seismic loadings. The proposed method incorporates probabilistic concepts into the classical limit equilibrium and the Newmark-type deformation techniques. The risk of damage is then computed by Monte Carlo simulation. Random process and RMS hazard method are introduced to produce seismic motions and also to use them in the seismic slope analyses. The geotechnical variability and sampling errors are also considered. The results of reliability analyses indicate that in a highly seismically active region, characterization of earthquake hazard is the more critical factor, and characterization of soil properties has a relatively small effect on the computed risk of slope failure and excessive slope deformations. The results can be applicable to both circular and non-circular slip surface failure modes.

  • In this paper, an individual blade control (IBC) methodology is applied to find the best input scenario for vibratory hub loads reduction of XH-59A co-axial rotorcraft in high speed flight. A comprehensive aeromechanics analysis code CAMRAD II is employed to analyze the aircraft. A parametric study is conducted for optimum IBC inputs leading to the maximum vibration reduction. Numerical results demonstrate that up to 50% reduction in the hub vibration index is obtained for an IBC input at 3/rev frequency with the amplitude and phase angle of 0.5 deg. and 300 deg., respectively. The upper rotor exhibits as much as 6% more vibration reduction as compared to that of the lower rotor due to a clean inflow characteristic of the rotor. It is found that further vibration reduction gain is reached for IBC inputs with advancing-side only control. The hub vibration becomes reduced by up to 17% in reference to that with full rotor disk control. It is noted that the additional gain is obtained with significantly less power input with the advancing-side only control.

  • This paper deals with a development of combined seismic methods, based on the application of Televiewer and seismic tomography, for the quantitative assessment of reclaimed body or dam at seashores in our county. The underground structure of reclaimed dam is very complex, mainly due to the unexpected exchange of rock fragments with the marine silty mud in conjunction with S.C.P. (Sand Compaction Pile) foundation, so that for several reasons only the use of Televiewer and seismic tomography for general application might not lead to a desirable resolution. Kinds of upgraded measuring and evaluation techniques for that are needed. For examples, a novel strategy for capturing the returning impulses from the outer side of casing plastic pipe is desired to be developed. For the tomograhy, one should be being more focussed on the study of raw data based on the wave propagation theory. In this paper, it is shown that such multidisciplinary approaches can be, by attempting to compare and jointly interpret the results from two methods, much efficient for understanding the reclaimed dam structure.

  • An efficient and accurate hybrid reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper to quantify the risk of an axially loaded single pile considering pile-soil interaction behavior and uncertainties in various design variables. The proposed method intelligently integrates the concepts of the response surface method, the finite difference method, the first-order reliability method, and the iterative linear interpolation scheme. The load transfer method is incorporated into the finite difference method for the deterministic analysis of a single pile-soil system. The uncertainties associated with load conditions, material and section properties of a pile and soil properties are explicitly considered. The risk corresponding to both serviceability limit state and strength limit state of the pile and soil is estimated. Applicability, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method in the safety assessment of a realistic pile-soil system subjected to axial loads are verified by comparing it with the results of the Monte Carlo simulation technique.

  • This paper mainly deals with the analysis of probabilistic characteristics of the disturbed function proposed to predict dynamic behavior of Geosynthetic-soil interface as the lining and cover systems used in waste landfills. Calibration and statistical property estimation of the parameters in the disturbed function model were first performed using many experimental data obtained from a new multi-purpose interface apparatus (M-PIA). In order to analyze the effect due to changes in chemical degradation and normal loads condition, probabilistic properties such as mean, coefficient of variation and distribution type of the disturbed function were evaluated using both the LHS method known to be a very efficient sampling scheme and the estimated statistical property of A and Z. As a result, variation of the disturbed function is found to range approximately from 10~28% according to the level of ${\xi}_D$ and Weibull appears to be the most adequate distribution type at almost all levels of ${\xi}_D$. It is concluded that a probabilistic safety assessment method for Geosynthetic-soil interface considering uncertainty in shear strength can be developed by utilizing probabilistic properties of the disturbed function obtained in this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the critical strengthening ratio of concrete railroad bridge strengthened with NSM using CFRP plate. The railroad bridge is usually under vibration and impact in service state. Therefore, it is important that the effective strengthening performance must be exhibited under the service loading is acted. To widely apply the NSM method for the concrete railroad bridge in field, it needs that reasonable strengthening parameter such as strengthening ratio has to be investigated and evaluated when the strengthening design is conducted. In this study, to suggest more reasonable strengthening ratio, material and geometrical uncertainty was considered and applied by Monte Carlo Simulation (MSC) technique. Lastly, the critical strengthening ratio of concrete railroad bridge strengthened with NSM using CFRP plate was evaluated by using the limit state function with the target reliability index.

  • Reliability analysis of jacket type offshore wind turbine (OWT) support structure under extreme ocean environmental loads was performed. Limit state function (LSF) of OWF support structure is defined by using structural dynamic response at mud-line. Then, the dynamic response is expressed as the static response multiplied by dynamic response factor (DRF). Probabilistic distribution of DRF is found from response time history under design significant wave load. Band limited beta distribution is used for internal friction angle of ground soil. Wind load is obtained in the form of thrust force from commercial code called GH_Bladed and then, applied to tower hub as random load. In a numerical example, the response surface method (RSM) is used to express LSF of jacket type support structure for 5MW OWF. Reliability index is found using first order reliability method (FORM).

  • Stress distributions dependent on fiber arrangements are studied using the two-dimensional representative volume element (RVE) model for uni-directionally continuous fiber-reinforced composites subjected to transverse tensile loading. It is easily expected that the stresses around the fibers are concentrated mainly due to the stiffness mismatch between the fiber and matrix materials. In this presentation, it is shown that the stresses are not always increased although the distance between two fibers is shortened. The 2D RVE models, originally having a regular hexagonal fiber array, is utilized to study the effect of the fiber locations on the stress distributions. As the central fiber is relocated, the stress distributions around the fiber are obtained through finite element analysis. It is found that the stresses around the fiber are strongly dependent on the fiber distance as well as the angle between the loading direction and the line connecting two fibers.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete frame subjected to cyclic lateral load and to provide result for developing improved seismic design criteria. A computer program named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. The strength increase of concrete due to the lateral confining reinforcement has been taken into account to model the confined concrete. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected local discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete frame subjected to cyclic lateral load is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.
