  • The thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) are commonly used to measure and record the expose of individuals to ionization radiation. Design and performance test results of a newly developed TL and OSL measurement system are presented in this paper. For this purpose, the temperature of the TL material can be controlled precisely in the range of $1{\sim}1.5^{\circ}C$ by using high-frequency (35 kHz) heating system. This high-frequency power supply was made of transformer with ferrite core. For optical stimulation, we have completed an optimal combination of the filters with the arrangement of GG420 filter for filtering the stimulating light source and a UG11 filter at the detecting window (PMT). By using a high luminance blue LED (Luxeon V), sufficient luminous intensity could be obtained for optical stimulation. By using various control boards, the TL/OSL reader device was successfully interfaced with a personal computer. A software based on LabView program (National Instruments, Inc.) was also developed to control the TL/OSL reader system. In this study, a multi-functional TL/OSL dosimeter was developed and the performance testing of the system was carried out to confirm its reliability and reproducibility.

  • In this paper, we proposed novel photonic bandgap(PBG) structure using EGP(Elevated Ground Plane) and via in ceramic substrate of microstrip line. From analysis result, the proposed PBG structure is reduced 52.5% at size and increased 45 % at bandwidth compared to typical planar PBG structure. It is also reduced 32 % at size and improved more than 8 dB at power loss compared to typical multilayer DGS(Defected Ground Structure). The proposed PBG structure also can be used bandstop and lowpass filter and it will be useful for small microwave integrated circuit and module development.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated High-Tc Superconducting (HTS) microstrip bandpass filters using Stepped Impedance Resonators(SIR) and studied on their characteristics. The $high-T_c$ superconducting $Y_1Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ epitaxial films were deposited by Pulse Laser Deposition (PLD) system on MgO. The fabricated filters were designed so as to operate in Ku band with central frequency 17.25 GHz, bandwidth 2.896% and ripple 0.01 dB. These filters were composed of parallel coupled microstrip SIR of which impedance ratio (K) are 0.5, 1.5. In the measured response, HTS filters had showed insertion loss below -0.5 dB. For comparison with normal conducting filter, we fabricated the Au counterpart that consists of the resonators as K=1.5 in the same dimension and measured performance of the Au filter. In comparison, HTS filter designed optimally got superior response to gold conterpart.

  • Air and soil are being contaminated by the environmental pollution as a result of climate change and urbanization, resulting in water pollution reaching serious levels. In this studies, we investigated the use of antimicrobial copper for the removal of biological pollutants from water system. Specifically, we tested its effects against E. coli, B. subtilis, S. aureus, K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa. Made a sphere shape having a diameter of 2cm using a strip-shaped copper wire of 0.5g, 1g and 2g. And then, to confirm the antimicrobial activities, each copper ball was equipped in the broth which inoculated each pathogens. The results showed that bacterial growth of the five test bacteria was inhibited by more than 99% after reaction with a 0.5 g copper ball for at least 20 minutes. Based on the these results, if perform the further experiment such cytotoxicity, it is expected that will be enough to be used as a filter for water quality purification. The developed technique is expected to be widely applied in various industries.

  • This paper presents how to design and implement a very compact, cost effective and broad band receiver module for IEEE 802.16 FWA(Fixed Wireless Access) in the 40 GHz band. The presented receiver module is fabricated in a multi-layer LTCC(Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic) technology with cavity process to achieve excellent electrical performances. The receiver consists of two MMICs, low noise amplifier and sub-harmonic mixer, an embedded image rejection filter and an IF amplifier. CB-CPW, stripline, several bond wires and various transitions to connect each element are optimally designed to keep transmission loss low and module compact in size. The LTCC is composed of 6 layers of Dupont DP-943 with relative permittivity of 7.1. The thickness of each layer is 100 um. The implemented module is $20{\times}7.5{\times}1.5\;mm^3$ in size and shows an overall noise figure of 4.8 dB, an overall down conversion gain of 19.83 dB, input P1 dB of -22.8 dBm and image rejection value of 36.6 dBc. Furthermore, experimental results demonstrate that the receiver module is suitable for detection of Digital TV signal transmitted after up-conversion of $560\~590\;MHz$ band to 40 GHz.
