  • This study estimate the adequate replacement rate of retirement income by income brackets and suggests roles of pension and non-pension income sources to achieve it for each income bracket. Priori research focused on elderly poverty; however, there has been little discussion about an adequate income level for retirement. We calculate an adequate income replacement rate separately for the poor, middle, and high income group as well as the average level of replacement rate for all groups. We also investigate the gap between the adequate income replacement rates and realized rates, and propose roles for each income source to curtail the gap. It is essential to recognize that the adequate income for retirement is unable to be met only by an annuity. To emove the gap, it is vital to utilize non-pension income although annuity is a primary source for retirement. Especially, the public and private pension plays a role to overcome poverty and live affluent in retirement, respectively.

  • This study aimed to assess trends in the prevalence, treatment, and control of diabetes according to the socio-economic level in Korean adults aged ${\geq}30$ years, using the 2007-2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Socio-economic status was assessed based on the household income. Multivariable logistic regression and predictive margins were used to evaluate the adjusted proportion of diabetes prevalence, awareness, treatment, and adequate glycemic control. During 2007-2017, the socio-economic inequalities on diabetes prevalence were observed in both men and women. However, the gradient of inequality increased only in men (p for interaction=0.034). Diabetes awareness, treatment, and control did not show socio-economic inequalities or increasing gradients in both sexes. Monitoring of these trends should be continued, and further research on effective interventions is needed.

  • Purpose: This study examined the dietary behavior, health status and nutrient intake by considering the level of household income of elderly people using data obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES VII) 2018. Methods: The study subjects were 1,355 elderly people over 65 years old (558 men, 797 women). Based on their household income, participants were classified into three groups: low-income, middle-income, and high-income. The variables consisted of general characteristics, dietary behavior, health status, health related behavior, and dietary intakes. Dietary data were estimated by the 24-hour dietary recall. Results: In men, the low-income group encompassed older, less educated, less employed, and living with family of first generation. However, in women, there were no differences in employment by the level of income, and women living alone had lower income than subjects living with family. Elderly men in the high-income group had a significantly higher level of nutrient intake (energy, protein, fat, phosphorous, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin C). Men in the low-income group consumed a significantly lower intake of fruits, seaweeds and eggs, including total food. Women in the low-income group had significantly less intake of protein, fat, calcium, phosphorous, iron, vitamin A, riboflavin, and niacin whereas women in the high-income group had significantly higher intake of sugar & sweet, eggs, and beverages, including total food. Conclusion: These results suggest that the level of household income is an important factor that influences food and nutrient intake in the Korean elderly. The socioeconomic status needs to be considered differently among elderly men and women when implementing food assistant programs and designing nutrition education programs.

  • This study aims to identify factors to affect cancer screening utilization and differences in cancer screening by household income. This research selected 3,393 adults aged ${\geq}40years$ among surveyees from the 6th(2014) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We analyzed state of cancer screening utilization according to general characteristics, life style, health status, income level using descriptive statistics. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the factors associated with cancer screening utilization. In result, cancer screening rate was significantly different according to household income. And the significant factors associated with cancer screening utilization were sex, age, marital status, education level, economic activity, private insurance, smoking, presence or absence of high physical activity, number of chronic diseases, and household income. This indicates that the effective cancer screening program on the low household income, chronic disease patients is needed, suitable for digital age. We believe that these results will be used positively for the equity of cancer screening utilization, providing the basic materials for the further research on the establishment of the health-related policy.

  • The aim of this study was to help disease management and prevention by analyzing the effects of income and education levels on the health of cardio-cerebrovascular patients. Using the raw data of 2010-2011 Korea Health & Nutrition Examination Survey, the correlations of health behaviors, general (socio-demographic) characteristics, body measurements, and blood test results of 3,687 cardio-cerebrovascular patients aged 30 or older were analyzed based on their income and education levels. The results suggested that lower income and education levels were correlated with a high prevalence of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. In addition, the OR values (95% CI) of current smoking were 0.71 (0.52-0.96) for patients with a high-income and 0.41 (0.29-0.58) for those with a high level of education, showing a strong correlation between lower levels of income and education and current smoking, which is related to health deterioration. In terms of one-month drinking and high risk drinking, the OR values (95% CI) of the patients with a high income were 1.55(1.22-1.95) and 1.42(1.11-1.82), respectively. Drinking was more prevalent among high-income patients but had no correlation with the education level. The practice of walking had no significant correlation with both income and education levels. Therefore, it is imperative to emphasize the importance of temperance to high-income patients, and the importance of quitting smoking to low-income patients, as well as to provide institutional support.

  • In this study, we analyzed the effect of the income level of cancer, stroke, and myocardial infarction on mortality by using National Health Insurance Service(NHIS) Cohort 2.0 DB. Patients who newly developed the disease in 2007 were observed till 2015. The analysis used the Cox probability proportional risk model and the competing risk model. The income level used information at the time of the onset of the disease in 2007, categorized into low / mid / high. The results showed that there were differences in the risks of death and secondary disease in patients with cancer, stroke, or myocardial infarction according to the income level. In addition to the need for a social safety net to lower the incidence of early deaths in low-income families, it seems necessary to continue to strengthen universal protection for serious diseases similar to the current policy.

  • This study aims to propose an optimal asset allocation that minimizes the risk of insufficient realized replacement rates compared to the OECD average replacement rate. To do this, we set the shortfall risk of replacement rates and calculates an asset allocation plan to minimize this risk based on the period of enrollment, the income level and additional contribution. We consider stocks and deposits as investment assets, using Monte Carlo simulation with a GBM model to generate return distributions for stocks. Our result show that, for individuals with a enrollment period of less than 30 years, participants should invest a minimum of 70-80% of their funds in risky assets to minimize the shortfall risk. However, the proportion of funds that need to be invested in risky assets declines significantly when participants contribute an additional premiums. This effect is particularly pronounced among low-income individuals. Therefore, to achieve OECD average replacement rates, the government needs to incentivize participants to invest more in risky assets, while also providing policies to encourage additional contributions, especially for the low-income population.

  • In this study, the author utilizes longitudinal data of the recent 12 years to verify whether the absolute versus relative income of old age has a significant effect on their life satisfaction of life. The findings of this study show that there is a significant difference in life satisfaction of old age according to respondents' relative income of three reference groups based on their asset quintile and residental area and education. In the correlation analysis using the cross-sectional data, the absolute and relative income level was closely related to the life satisfaction. In the panel regression analysis using the 12 years longitudinal data from the Korea National Labour Panel dataset, the income level of counterparts in those reference groups appeared highly significant in determining the level of life satisfaction of the elderly. However, some demographic variables such as age and marital status did not have a statistically significant effect in the long-term perspective. The income of reference groups in terms of asset levels, education and region as well as their own past life satisfaction level had a significant effect on the elders' life satisfaction determination. These results suggest that the relative income hypothesis in terms of life satisfaction among the elderly is more valid than the previous absolute income hypothesis.
