  • In this study, non-load-carrying fillet welded joints fabricated using EH grade-steel are evaluated with the structural stress approach. The thickness effect was investigated by a study on welded steel joints with thickness ranging from 25 to 80mm. As-welded joint for main plate thickness of 25 to 80mm, the fatigue strength is reduced gradually. On the other hand, in case of main plate thickness of 25 to 80mm, the structural stress concentration factor increases gradually. As a result, for structural stress approach, thickness effect is not required for correction. Based on these results, a new evaluation fillet welded joint for fatigue design purposes has been proposed FAT 125.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the principal factor controlling transverse residual stress at the weldment for joining unit hull blocks. In order to do it, the comprehensive FE analyses were carried out to evaluate the effect of distance between fillet and butt weldments, stiffener span and in-plane restraint degree on the amount and distribution of transverse residual stress in way of the weldments between unit hull blocks. In accordance with FEA results, principal factor controlling the amount of transverse residual stress at the weldments was identified as in-plane restraint degree of butt weldment for unit blocks. The effect of other variables on the transverse residual stress was very small relatively.

  • It was attempted to improve seam-tracking performance by applying a new arc-sensing algorithm for FCAW(flux-cored arc welding) process in fillet joints. For this study the authors have introduced three different weight factors: $\circled1$ arc currents at the weaving end are more weighted, $\circled2$ arc currents are evenly weighted along the weaving, and $\circled3$ arc currents at the weaving center are more weighted. To evaluate the 3 factors the values of signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio has been measured. The values were obtained for various welding conditions with different gaps in horizontal and vertical fillet joints. The test results showed that the S/N ratio of the 1st case was highest which resulted in the best of seam tracking performance. In addition, the comparison between the seam tracking performance in horizontal fillet joints and that in vertical ones has been done, and the result showed that tracking performance in vertical joints was relatively better than that in horizontal joints.

  • In Korea Gas Corporation, as one of the pipeline repairing methods, damaged pipelines are sometimes treated with a temporally employment of split sleeve. On conducting the repair process, circumferential fillet and longitudinal groove welding usually must be included. For the case of groove welding, a considerable amount of R&D have been carried out related to property changes, while few study on the property change in fillet welding has been conducted. In this paper, so as to confirm the specification of fillet welding in terms of safety and reliability, properties changed by fillet welding were investigated for two welding processes. Qualifying tests such as reviewing macrostructure and nick-break tests were performed according to API 1104 and ASME section IX. In addition, tensile properties and hardness were evaluated according to KS B0841 and BS 4515. The fillet weld prepared by the qualified procedure showed melting depth of 0.8∼1.3mm and heat affected zone of 2.8∼3.4mm length. No crack and lack of penetration were observed. And the results of hardness and nick-break tests satisfied code requirements. The area crossed by fillet and groove welding line was found to have minimal tensile strength.

  • In GMA(Gas Metal Arc)Welding, the weld size that is a locally melted area of a workpiece is one of the most important considerations in determining the strength of a welded structure. Variations in the weld power and the welding heat flux may affect the weld pool formation and ultimately the size of the weld. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the weld size requires a precise analysis of the weld thermal cycle. In this study, a model which can estimate the weld bead geometry and a method for thermal analysis, including the model, are suggested. In order to analyze the weld bead geometry, a mathematical model was developed with transformed coordinates to apply to the horizontal fillet joints. A heat flow analysis was performed with a two dimensional finite element model that was adopted for computing the base metal melting zone. The reliability of the proposed model and the thermal analysis was evaluated through experiments, and the results showed that the proposed model was very effective for predicting the weld bead shape and good correspondence in melting zone of the base metal.

  • GMA welding process is a production process to improve productivity for the provision of higher welding quality of material. These includes numerous process variables that could affect welding quality, productivity and cost savings. Recently, the welding part of construction equipment had frequent failure of major components in the welding part of each subsidiary material due to shock which is very poor according to the welding part. Therefore, the implementation of sound welding procedure is the most decisive factor for the reliability of construction machinery. The data generated through experiments conducted in this study has validated its effectiveness for the optimization of bead geometry and process variables is presented. The criteria to control the process parameters, to achieve a good bead geometry. This study has developed mathematical models and algorithms to predict or control the bead geometry in GMA fillet welding process.

  • The block assembly of ship consists of a certain type of heat processes such as cutting, bending, welding, residual stress relaxation and fairing. The residual deformation due to welding is inevitable at each assembly stage. The geometric inaccuracy caused by the welding deformation tends to preclude the introduction of automation and mechanization and needs the additional man-hours for the adjusting work at the following assembly stage. To overcome this problem, a distortion control method should be applied. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an accurate prediction method which can explicitly account for the influence of various factors on the welding deformation. The validity of the prediction method must be also clarified through experiments. This paper proposes a simplified analysis method to predict the welding deformation of panel block structure. For this purpose, a simple prediction model for fillet welding deformations has been derived based on numerical and experimental results through the regression analysis. On the basis of these results, the simplified analysis method has been applied to some examples to show its validity.

  • Austenitic stainless steels have excellent corrosion resistance, durability and fire resistance. Especially, since STS304L among austenitic types is a low-carbon variation of STS304 and has excellent intergranular corrosion resistance, it can often be used under the welded condition without heat treatment after field welding. This paper investigated ultimate behaviors such as ultimate strength and weld metal fracture mechanism of STS304L fillet-welded connections with TIG(tungsten inert gas) welding through test results. Main variables of specimens are weld length and welding direction against loading. Fracture of specimens are classified into three modes(tensile fracture, shear fracture and block shear fracture). Ultimate strengths were compared according to the welding direction and weld length and TFW series with transverse fillet weld had the highest strength compared with other types(LFW series with longitudinal fillet weld and FW series with all round weld). It is known that current design specifications such as KBC 2016 and AISC2010 underestimated the strength of TFW and LFW specimens and provided unconservative estimates for FW specimens. Finally, strength equations were proposed considering material properties of STS 304L material.

  • Pipe welding is used in various ranges such as civil engineering and ship building engineering. Until now, many technicians work for pipe welding manually under harmful, dangerous and difficult conditions. So it is necessary to install automation process. For automation pipe welding, relation between welding parameters & bead shape should be considered. Using this relation, bead shape could be expected from welding parameters. FCAW was used in this study. Instead of pipe workpiece, fillet joint plate is used, which were inclined 0,45,90,135,180 degree. By analyzing between welding parameters (current, welding speed, voltage) and bead shape parameters with non-linear multiple regression, bead shape parameters could be expected. Piecewise Cubic Hermite Interpolation was used to expect smooth curved bead shape with bead shape parameters. From these processes, bead shape could be expected from welding parameters.

  • In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the fillet weld which was done over the tack weld. This method used the response surface analysis in which the leg length and the reinforcement height were chosen as the quality variables of the weld bead profile. The overall desirability function, which was combined desirability function fur the two quality variables, was employed as the objective function for getting the optimal welding condition. In the experiments, the target values of the leg length and the reinforcement height are 6m and zero respectively for the horizontal fillet weld of 10mm thickness mild steel. The optimal welding conditions could predict the weld bead profile(leg length and reinforcement height) as 6.00mm and 0.19mm without tack weld and 6.00mm and 0.48mm with tack weld. from a series of welding test, it was revealed that a uniform weld bead can be obtained by adopting the optimal welding condition which was determined according to the method proposed.
