Fin conduction not only enhances heat transfer to the ambient air but also increases tube-to-tube conduction. The latter is known to deteriorate the heat exchanger performance. Heat conduction between neighboring tubes thorough the fin is numerically investigated for accurate performance analysis of plate finned-tube heat exchangers. Governing equations for arbitrary plate fin are solved and the temperature distribution is obtained using the principle of superposition. Analysis is made using finite element method by changing the shapes of fin, the arrangements of tubes and the fin parameter mD. It is found that tube-to-tube conduction is significant when mD is small or the distance between neighboring tubes is small.

As an innovative effort to secure economically viable heat recovery system, various fin shapes for industrial fin-tube heat exchangers have been studied for better performance. In this study, the waste gas heat recovery from four different fin shapes was experimentally performed for heat transfer rate and pressure drop. According to the tested results, the twist and wavy shape fins of rectangular type show the superior performance in terms of Goodness factor and jH/f factor ratio, whereas the circular spiral fin shows the inferior values. Experimental results shows good comparison with the numerical results with a slight discrepancy of 5%, which is quite resonable.
In this study, airside performance of round fin-and-tube heat exchangers are compared with that of the herringbone wave fin-and-tube heat exchangers with an aim to investigate the effect of fin shape on thermal performance. Results show that j factors of the round wave fin are 1.2~22% larger than those of herringbone wave fin. The f factors of the round wave fin are -1.0~29% smaller than those of herringbone wave fin for 1 or 2 row configuration. For 3 row configuration, f factors of the round wave fin are 8.3~23% larger. The reason may be attributed to the reduced recirculation zone in the valley of the fin for round wave fin as compared with that of the herringbone wave fin. For round wave fin, the effect of fin pitch on j and f factor is not significant. In addition, j factors decrease as the number of tube row increases. On the other hand, f factors are independent of the number of tube row. A new correlation was developed based on the present data.

Recent trends in slim air conditioners require heat exchangers of reduced flow depth. In this study, slim louver fin geometry was obtained using predictive correlations. The deduced geometry yielded 10 mm flow depth, 0.9 mm louver pitch, and $35^{\circ}$ louver angle. Samples were made and tests were conducted. The new slim sample yielded 36% higher j factor and 2.3% higher f factor compared with those of the standard sample. This implies that 26% reduction of heat exchanger volume was possible by reducing the flow depth. In addition, the $j/f^{1/3}$ of the slim sample was 55% larger than that of the standard sample. Furthermore, the results are compared with predictions made using existing correlations.

Extensive experiments were carried out to investigate the mass transfer and flow structures around a circular cylinder with annular fins in crossflow. The naphthalene sublimation method was employed to measure the circumferential and longitudinal variations of mass transfer from the circular cylinder between annular fins and H is the height of the fin from the cylinder surface. A remarkable enhancement of mass transfer due to the horseshoe vortices was observed near the corner junction between the annular fin and circular cylinder. The present results indicate that the local circumferential Sherwood number shows the higher values on the front stagnation point. The maximum augmentation of mass transfer rate at the center of cylinder is found near L/H-0.15 due to the separation bubble along the annular fins. The secondary flows, which are the corner vortices V2 and V3 near the end wall of the annular fin, are fairly predicted from the distributions of local Sherwood number in the spanwise direction. The average Sherwood number of overall surface at L/H=0.15 is larger 2.0 times than that of without annualr fins. The correlations of total average mass transfer rate with L/H and Re$_{L}$ can also be obtained.d.
With the wide applications of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, the design of composite joints have become a very important research area because the joints are often the weakest areas in composite structures. This paper presents an analytical study of the stress distributions in mechanically single-fastened and multi-fastened composite laminates. The finite element models which treat the pin and hole contact problem using a contact stress analysis are described. A dimensionless stress concentration factor is used to compare the stress distributions in composite laminates quantitatively In the case of single-pin loaded composite laminate, the effects of stacking sequence, the ratio of a hole diameter and the width of a laminate (W/D ratio), the ratio of hole diameter and distance from edge to hole (E/D ratio), friction coefficient and clamping force are considered. In the case of multi-pin loaded composite laminate, the influence of the number of pins, pitch distance, number of rows, row spacing and hole pattern are considered. The results show that P/D ratio and E/D ratio affect more on stress distributions near the hole boundary than the other factors. In the case of multi-pin loaded composite laminate, the stress concentration in the double column case is better than the other cases of multi-pin loaded composite laminate.

In this study, the characteristics of the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop were numerically analyzed according to the axis ratio (AR), pitch, location of vortex generator, and bump phase of the tube surface about an elliptical fin-tube heat exchanger. The boundary condition for CFD analysis was decided as a tube surface temperature of 348 K and inlet air velocity of 1-5 m/s. RSM 7th turbulent model was chosen as the numerical analysis for the sensitivity level. The analysis results indicated that the AR and transverse pitch decreased whereas the heat transfer coefficient increased. On the other hand, there was little difference in the longitudinal pitch. Furthermore, the heat transfer rate was more favorable when the vortex generator was located in front of the tube. Also, the bump phase of the tube surface indicated that the pressure drop and heat transfer were more favorable with the circle type than with the serrated type.

The fin-tube heat exchanger being used for industrial boiler, radiator, refrigerator has been conducted in various studies to improve it's performance. In this study, the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop was theoretically analyzed according to longitudinal pitch, location of vortex generator, bump phase and number of the tube surface about the plain fin-tube heat exchanger. The boundary condition for the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis applied with the SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model assumed as the tube surface temperature of 333 K, the inlet air temperature of 423-438 K and the inlet air velocity of 1.5~2.1 m/s. The analysis results indicated that the heat transfer coefficient is not affected highly by the longitudinal pitch, and the heat transfer characteristics was more favorable when the vortex generator was located in front of the tube. Also the bump phase of the tube surface indicated that circle type was more appropriate than serrated type and triangle type in the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop, and the sixteen's bump phase of circle type was most favorable.

This paper describes the design optimization of a rotating rectangular channel with staggered arrays of pin-fins by Kriging metamodeling technique. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the height to the diameter of the pin-fins and the ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to the diameter of the pin-fins are chosen as the design variables. The objective function that is a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss related terms with a weighting factor is selected for the optimization. To construct the Kriging model, objective function values at 20 training points generated by Latin hypercube sampling are evaluated by a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis method with the SST turbulence model. The Kriging model predicts the objective function value that agrees well with the value calculated by the RANS analysis at the optimum point. The objective function is reduced by 11% by the optimization of the channel.

In this work the replacement material for magnesium alloy was investigated and an optimized design was suggested for the horizontal fin of a fighter's external fuel tank. For the replacement of magnesium alloy, Aluminum alloy, AL 2034-T351, was selected by considering material properties and its procurement. The strength and fracture toughness properties of AL 2034-T351 are stronger than those of magnesium alloy, but the specific weight of AL 2034-T351 is heavier than that of magnesium alloy by 65%. To meet the allowable limit of C.G. shift in the tank, the design of horizontal fin was optimized by reducing the original shape by 20% and resizing the maximum thickness to 7 mm. From the results of the static and dynamic stress analysis for improving the safety factor of the joint section and the joint hole, the radius of curvature in the aft joint section of the new fin was designed as 8.5mm.
