  • This paper presents an approach for detecting and measuring human skin pigmentation. In the proposed scheme, we extract a skin area by a GMM-EM clustering based skin color model that is estimated from the statistical analysis of training images and remove tiny noises through the morphology processing. A skin area is decomposed into two components of hemoglobin and melanin by an independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm. Then, we calculate the intensities of hemoglobin and melanin by using the projection transformed block coefficient and determine the existence of skin pigmentation according to the global and local distribution of two intensities. Furthermore, we measure the area and density of the detected skin pigmentation. Experimental results verified that our scheme can both detect the skin pigmentation and measure the quantity of that and also our scheme takes less time because of the location histogram.

  • Skin aging is not a disease nor an abnormal phenomenon but a collection of degenerative changes with age, characterized by skin dryness, wrinkle formation, and loss of skin elasticity. The skin wrinkles are caused by either genetically predisposed factors or environmental factors such as UV irradiation or physical/chemical stimulus. The histological manifestations of wrinkles are changes in both amount and integrity of elastic and collagen fibers. Here we report the isolation and characterization of 3 active compounds, prangenidin, 8-hydroxybergapten, and xanthotoxol from Angelica dahurica root. The anti-wrinkle activities of these compounds were also investigated.

  • Currently, teenagers value the beauty of appearance due to the proximity of the media. Therefore, acne on the skin is not a serious disease, but if it is managed incorrectly, it will leave scars and marks on the face, which leads to students' depression, stress and loss of confidence. Therefore, this study analyzed how acne skin afects adolescent's stress, depression and self-esteem and recognized that acne is not a simple skin disease but is closely related to mental health. And three hypotheses were established to be more effective in managing acne skin and to be used as basic data for skin care. As a result, it was found that acne development of junior high school students had an actual effect on stress and depression. Acne skin care is considered to be necessary for mental health, not superficial management.

  • Bacteria were collected from the thumb surface of the twenty young adults that are 20 to 25 years old and cultured on the Luria-Bertani agar. The 16S rDNA of the cultured bacteria was amplified by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and DNA sequence of the PCR products analyzed. Total 14 different bacterial species were identified by comparing their 16S rDNA sequence with the data in genbank. It appears that each individual has 2.5 different bacterial species in average. Staphylococcal species were the most abundant among the identified bacteria and Micrococcus luteus was the second. Staphylococcal species were isolated at similar frequency between male and female donors but Micrococcus luteus was isolated more frequently from female than male donors. The result obtained in this study might be useful in research of dermatic diseases, searching for new drugs for those diseases and development of new cosmetics.

  • This study is intended to research female university students' concern with beauty care, their skin condition, knowledge and treatment comparing the majors with the non-majors in Seoul. This comparative study between them focused on their educational and behavioral differences in beauty care in the same living space, and the results were as follows: The majors' average point on the concern with skin health care was higher than the non-majors(p<.01). There were more combination skin type in the major group, and more dry skin type in the non-major group. Also, there were meaningful differences among the two groups in frequency of double cleansing after makeup, exfoliating, massaging or applying mask packs, using sunscreen(p<.01, p<.001, p<.01, p<.01). Further, intake rates of instant food and moisture were meaningfully different between them(p<.001, p<.05). In addition, the majors more tended to purchase cosmetics efficiently through lots of channels, and showed more active attitude to buy high-price cosmetics with outstanding properties although they have financial burden(p<.001). It was hoped that the results of this study would be used in skin care industry and education area in the future.

  • In this study, we applied 15% glycolic acid peeling agent and 30% glycolic acid peeling agent to the dorsal skin of mice and analyzed the oil content, moisture content, and pH value of the skin before and after test using cutometer. Ultrastructure for changes in the epidermis of mice were observed under a dermoscope and a scanning electron microscope before and after test. When using 15% glycolic acid peeling agent, the changes of moisture content was measured 74.67 AU for the normal control group and 70.21 AU for the experimental group, the oil content was 13.49 mg/$cm^2$ for the normal control group before test and 8.25 mg/$cm^2$ after test, and the pH value was 6.70 and 5.36 before and after test, respectively. When using 30% glycolic acid peeling agent, the moisture content was measured 74.46 AU for the normal control group before test and 53.50 AU for the experimental group after test, the oil content was 13.82mg/$cm^2$ and 5.70 mg/$cm^2$ before and after test, and the pH value was 6.45 and 4.58 before and after test, respectively. As such, it was found that the changes of moisture and oil content on the skin rely on the concentration of peeling agent and the degree of exfoliation of keratin. The surface of stratum corneum of mice with application of 15% glycolic acid peeling agent was relatively smooth and the exposed cellular surface of keratinocyte had some wrinkles. The surface of stratum corneum of mice with application of 30% glycolic acid peeling agent was smooth. No wrinkles were observed under high-resolution scanning electron microscope.

  • The skin is one of the largest organs in our body and participates in many of the human organism's physiological and pathological events. Skin function were known for self-maintenance and self-repair, mechanical and chemical stress protection, protection against UV and environmental pathogenic micro-organisms, production of vitamin D, and social and psychological function through the physical aspect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the variation of biophysical parameters and to find relation with skin biomarkers in different anatomical site and age in Korean women. About 70 healthy volunteers in age range 20 to 49 were participated in this test. Test areas were the forearms and the cheek. Investigation to determine biophysical parameters on human skin, was carried out using various non-invasive methods. For analysis to skin biomarkers, we studied to examine various biomarkers for the quantitative determination of cortisol, fibronectin, keratin-1, 10, and 11, involucrin, and keratin-6 in human face and forearm. And we measured to skin biophysical parameters for skin anatomical site and age difference with non-invasive methods. As results of measuring site, some parameters were have following significant difference, stratum corneum hydration, trans epidermal water loss and skin color (L and a value). As results of age difference, skin colors were had only significant difference with age. For cortisol, keratin-6, fibronectin, keratin-1, 10, 11 contents, there were no significant difference in age and site. However, involucrin level in the cheeks were the highest for age group 30 ~ 39 compared to other age groups. These results suggest that in individual skin condition may explain detailed skin state variation.
