Safety Assessment of Double Skin Hull Structure against Ultimate Bending and Fatigue Strength (이중선각구조 선박의 최종굽힘강도와 피로강도에 대한 안전성 평가)

  • In this paper presented is the reliability analysis of a double skinned hull structure against the ultimate bending moment and fatigue strength under longitudinal bending. The ultimate bending strength is obtained through the beam-column approach in which the load-end shortening curves(stress-strain curves) of stiffened plates under mini-axial compression are derived using the concept of plastic hinge collapse. The fatigue damage only is considered as fatigue failure for which the Miner's damage rule is employed. Assessed are fatigue reliability for the possible joint types found at deck structure. Also included is the reliability analysis of a series system of which elements are ultimate and fatigue failure.

Improvement of Fatigue Model of Concrete Pavement Slabs Using Environmental Loading (환경하중을 이용하는 콘크리트 포장 슬래브 피로모형의 개선)

  • Concrete slab curls and warps due to the uneven distribution of temperature and moisture and as the result, internal stress develops within the slab. Therefore, environmental loads must be considered in addition to the traffic loads to predict the lifespan of the concrete pavement more accurately. The strength of the concrete slab is gradually decreases to a certain level at which fatigue cracking is generated by the repetitive traffic and environmental loadings. In this study, a new fatigue regression model was developed based on the results from previously performed studies. To verify the model, another laboratory flexural fatigue test program which was not used in the model development, was conducted and compared with the predictions of other existing models. Each fatigue model was applied to analysis logic of cumulative fatigue damage of concrete pavement developed in the study. The sensitivity of cumulative fatigue damage calculated by each model was analyzed for the design factors such as slab thickness, joint spacing, complex modulus of subgrade reaction and the load transfer at joints. As the result, the model developed in this study could reflect environmental loading more reasonably by improving other existing models which consider R, minimum/maximum stress ratio.

  • 지진하중에 의한 콘크리트의 손상 및 파괴의 적절한 평가를 위한 많은 연구가 수행되고 있지만 현재까지 손상을 당한 부재의 잔여강도를 예측할 수 있는 적절한 손상 모델이 없는 실정이다. 본 논문은 콘크리트의 손상에 관한 기본적인 현상들을 면밀히 조사 연구한 후 콘크리트의 low-cycle 피로현상을 해석모델링하여 반복하중 하에서의 손상모델을 제안하였다. 제안된 모델은 콘크리트가 파괴에 도달할 시 싸이클 수 대신에 부재의 흡수에너지 능력을 주요변수로 택하였다. 특히 본 손상모델으 정확성은 기 제안한바 있는 반복하중 작용시의 콘크리트 부재의 해석적인 이력모델[3]을 사용하여 예증하였다.

  • The MEPDG(Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide) developed based on the AASHTO Design Guide helps engineers find optimal alternatives by using traffic volume, climate, material property, and pavement structure as its input parameters. However, because technical problems were found in the MEPDG, efforts to improve the program by settling the problems have been continued. Meanwhile, another mechanistic-empirical design program has been developed by the KPRP(Korea Pavement Research Program) in Korea. To develop and improve the Korean design program reasonably, it is necessary to analyze the MEPDG and then compare programs each other. For concrete pavement, fatigue cracking is predicted by using very complicated logic different from other performance indicators. Therefore, in this paper, transfer functions of the fatigue cracking used in the version of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.1 of the MEPDG were analyzed. Sensitivity of the input parameters to the cumulative fatigue damage was compared to each other by the MEPDG version and KPRP.

Fatigue Analysis for Newly Installed Blade Antenna of Aging Aircraft (노후 항공기 신규 블레이드 타입 안테나 장착에 따른 피로 해석 연구)

  • In this study, as a part of the aging aircraft performance improvement project for which no design information is provided, a new type of blade antenna is installed on the main part of the aging aircraft, and the method of proving the fatigue life of the main part of the aircraft is reviewed and summarized. There are various methods to prove fatigue life according to the manufacturer and aircraft design conditions. The fatigue life prediction and damage tolerance range of the relevant site were obtained through related regulations and industry examples. From these results, the fatigue life of newly installed antennas around the main parts of the aging aircraft was evaluated and the maintenance period and criteria were set according to the damage tolerance.

  • Impedance based monitoring technique was investigated to evaluate the damage occurring in wind turbine blade. In this study, PVDF film piezo sensors were patched on the 10 kW wind turbine blade, and impedance was measured over the frequency range of 1~200 MHz under fatigue loading. With applying fatigue loads on the blade, change in maximum deflection of the blade and local strain values could be obtained from the strain gages attached on the blade, and difference of the impedance signatures was also observed. From these data, it could be found that local damage or geometrical change in the blade structure happened. To quantitatively compare the impedance signature patterns, a statistical algorithm, scalar damage metric M was used. It was calculated from the impedance signatures considering fatigue loads and location of the sensors. The metric values were compared to correlate the metrics with damage in the blade.

  • The effects of re-peening on the fatigue damaged material are studied in this paper. The effects of re-peening process on surface hardness, surface roughness, surface compressive residual stress, and fatigue life are investigated. The results can be summarized in brief as follows: The depth of hardening layer was increased by re-peening process. There is no large variation of the surface roughness by re-peening process. The compressive residual stress of shot-peened specimen decreases under the fatigue loading and then increases again by re-peening process. Re-peening process increases the fatigue lifo of shot-peened and fatigue damaged specimen. The increase of fatigue lift under high stress level is much higher than under low stress level.

  • A FEM-based analytical approach was used to evaluate the multiaxial high cycle fatigue damage of an automotive sub-frame. Elastic Multi Body Simulation (MBS) has been applied in order to determine the multiaxial load histories. The stresses due to these loads have been given by FE computation. These results have been used as the input for the multiaxial fatigue analysis. For the assessment of multiaxial high cycle fatigue damage, the signed von Mises, the signed Tresca, the absolute maximum principal stress and critical plane methods have been employed. In addition, the biaxiality ratio, a$\sub$e/, the absolute maximum principal stress, $\sigma$$\sub$p/ and the angle, $\phi$$\sub$P/, between $\sigma$$\sub$1/ and the local x-axis, have been calculated to evaluate the stress state at each node.

  • Metal fatigue is an important aging mechanism that material characteristics can be deteriorated when even a small load is applied repeatedly. An accurate fatigue evaluation is very important for component structural integrity and reliability. In the design stage of a nuclear power plant, the fatigue evaluations of the Class 1 components have to be performed. However, operating experience shows that the design evaluation can be very conservative due to conservatism in the transient severity and number of occurrence. Therefore, the fatigue monitoring system has been considered as a practical mean to ensure safe operation of the nuclear power plants. The fatigue monitoring system can quantify accumulated fatigue damage up to date for various plant conditions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the fatigue monitoring procedure and to introduce the fatigue monitoring program developed by the authors. The feasibility of the fatigue monitoring program is demonstrated by comparing with the actual operating data and finite element analysis results.
