The naval structure exposes to environmental vibration of shafted propeller propulsion and engine vibration. The shipboard equipments are developed compliance to MIL-STD-167-1A. For this purpose, vibration fatigue life of shipboard equipment for long lives should be estimate via an analytical approach and vibration test. In this paper, High cycle fatigue strength of cast aluminum alloy A356 using shipboard equipment was evaluated by 14 S-N method. The stress applied on the structure is evaluated by an analytical method(frequency response analysis with sinusoidal input and a fatigue evaluation) to simulate a MIL-STD-167-1A test. The frequency with the maximum equivalent stress is shown by Max. test frequency and the vibration fatigue life of shipboard equipment was estimated by Miner's rule.

Cold and hot-rolled carbon steel sheets are commonly used in railroad cars or commercial vehicles such as the automobile. The sheets used in these applications are mainly fabricated by spot welding, which is a type of electric resistance welding. However, the fatigue strength of a spot-welded joint is lower than that of the base metal because of high stress concentration at the nugget edge of the spot-welded part. In particular, the fatigue strength of the joint is influenced by not only geometrical and mechanical factors but also the welding conditions for the spot-welded joint. Therefore, there is a need for establishing a reasonable criterion for a long-life design for spot-welded structures. In this thesis, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ relation curves have been used to determine a long-life fatigue-design criterion for thin-sheet structures. However, as these curves vary under the influence of welding conditions, mechanical conditions, geometrical factors, etc. It is very difficult to systematically determine a fatigue-design criterion on the basis of these curves. Therefore, in order to eliminate such problems, the welding residual stresses generated during welding and the stress distributions around the weld generated by external forces were numerically and experimentally analyzed on the basis of the results, reassessed fatigue strength of gas welded joints.

Recently advantages in composite and light weight material technique have led to the increased use of structural adhesives in various industries. In spite of such wide application of the adhesive joints, the evaluation method of fracture strength and design methodology of them, have not been established. In this study finite element method, theoretical and experimental analyses were investigated according to changes of lap length and adhesive for adhesive single-lap joint. As the results, the strength evaluation of adhesive joint by conventional nominal stress, was pointed out inadequate strength evaluation and design method regardless stress singularity, stress distribution and crack propagation in its adhesive layer. Also, it was examined the problems to apply fracture mechanics by means of static and fatigue test.

This study presents reliability assessment of merchant ships with focus on hull girder ultimate limit state, taking into account the time-dependent effects of corrosion, fatigue cracking and local denting. Some considerations for establishing a reliability-based repair and maintenance scheme are also made so as to keep a ship's hull girder strength reliability at an acceptable level even later in life.

Stainless steel sheets are widely used as structural materials for the manufacture of railroad cars and commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For the fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet joints and plug joints, it is necessary to obtain information on the stress distribution at the weldment and the fatigue strength of the gas welded joints. Moreover the influence of the geometrical parameters corresponding to the gas welded joints on the stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained from the data recorded in fatigue tests. Using these results, the ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged according the relation between $\Delta\sigma-N_f$ and the maximum stress at the edge of the fillet welded joint.

We measured the mechanical and thermal properties of four types of cast irons used for manufacturing the brake discs of railway vehicles. It was found that these properties could be controlled by varying the composition of Ni, Cr, and Mo. Thermal fatigue tests were carried out by using a thermal fatigue tester in which thermal cycles could be controlled. Thermal crack initiation and propagation were measured on cylindrical specimens. Finally, we simulated the thermal fatigue test procedure by finite element analysis and calculated the thermal fatigue lifetimes by Manson-Coffin's equation and the maximum principal strain. The estimated thermal fatigue lifetimes corresponded to the measured lifetimes when the total crack length was $40{\mu}m{\sim}1mm$.
A modified method for the analysis of short fatigue crack growth has been presented, and calculations based upon the modified method are compared with experimental results for S45C carbon steel. It is also shown that the modified method is in good agreement with experimental data. The proposed equation for the fatigue crack growth rates includes a material constant which relates the threshold level to the endurance limit, a correction for elastic-plastic behaviour and a means for dealing with the effects of crack closure. In this study one of the modifications is to substitute the Forman' s elastic expression of the stress intensity factor range into the geometrical factor The other is a consideration of the bending effect which is developed from the moment caused by the eccentric cross sectional geometry as the crack grows. Thus, this method is useful for residual life prediction of the mechanical structures as well as the welding structures.
A structural reliability analysis of fatigue truck model for fatigue failure of highway steel bridges was performed by applying the Miner's fatigue damage rule expressed as a function of various random variables affecting fatigue damage. Among the variables, the statistical parameters for equivalent moment, impact factor, and loadometer were obtained by analyzing recently measured domestic traffic data, whereas the parameters on fatigue strength, girder distribution factor, and headway factor of the measured data available in the literature were used. The effects of various fatigue truck models, fatigue life, ADTT, fatigue detail category, loadometer, and gross vehicle weight of fatigue truck on the reliability index of fatigue damage were analyzed. It is expected that the analytical results presented herein can be used as a basic background material in the calibration of both fatigue design truck and fatigue load factor of LRFD specification.

The distributions of fatigue life of concrete for various applied fatigue stress levels are investigated. The concrete beam specimens are tested in four-point flexural loading conditions. Three different levels of applied fatigue stresses are considered. They are 85%. 75%. 65%, respectively, of the static flexural strength of concrete. The present study indicates that the shapes of the probability distribution of fatigue lives are rather different for different levels of applied fatigue stress. This necessitates the consideration of the effects of applied fatigue stress levels on fatigue life distributions of concrete in order to conduct a realistic fatigue reliability analysis. The graphical method, the method of moments, and the method of maximum likelihood estimation are used to evaluate the distribution parameters of fatigue lives. It was found that the shape parameter of Weibull distribution for the fatigue life of concrete ranges from 2.0 to 4.0 according to the level of applied fatigue stress.

Internal defects are a major concern in the casting process because they have a significant influence on the strength and fatigue life of casting products. In general, they cause stress concentration and can be a starting point of cracks. Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of internal defects on mechanical properties such as fatigue life. In this study, fatigue experiments on tensile specimens with internal defects were performed. The internal defects in the casting product were scanned by an industrial CT scanner, and its shape was simplified by ellipsoidal primitives for the structural and fatigue analysis. The analysis results were compared with experimental results for casting products with internal defects. It was demonstrated that it is possible to consider internal defects of casting products in stress and fatigue analysis. The proposed method provides a tool for the prediction of the fatigue life of casting products and the investigation of the effects of internal defects on mechanical performance.
