  • Owing to the increasing worldwide interest in green technology and renewable energy sources, flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs) are gaining importance as a viable alternative to traditional battery systems. Since the energy storage capacity of an FESS is proportional to the principal mass-moment of inertia and the square of the running speed, a design that maximizes the principal inertia while operatingrunning at the highest possible speed is important. However, the requirements for the stability of the system may impose a constraint on the optimal design. In this paper, an optimal design of an FESS that not only maximizes the energy capacity but also satisfies the requirements for system stability and reduces the sensitivity to external disturbances is proposed. Cross feedback control in combination with a conventional proportional-derivative (PD) controller is essential to reduce the effect of gyroscopic coupling and to increase the stored energy and the specific energy density.

  • Data acquisition system and computer program developed in this study could be well used in engine vibration analysis. The system and program developed were also operated to be able to control measuring interval, number of channels, number of data. The flywheel was specially studied to provide the proper weight with rubber damper for the engine design at low level of vibration. This study was conducted to obtain basic data which affect the engine vibration. The experiment of this study was performed on original weight flywheel, weight-reduced flywheel, weight-reduced and rubber-coated flywheel, weight-reduced and damper-attached flywheel. Avarage of peak value, maximum vibration, power spectrum density based on FFT analysis are major factors of this experiment. Results were obtained as follows : 1. When rubber was inserted in the flywheel rim of which weight was reduced from 32.2kgf to 24.4kgf, maximum vibration of the engine was decreased 48.3% at X axis, 35.5% at Y axis and 34.6% at Z axis in comparison with the flywheel of original weight. 2. When the flywheel of rubber damper was compared with the original flywheel, the average of absolute vibration for rubber damped flywheel was decreased at X, Y, Z axis and especially its decreasing rate was so high at X-axis comparing with the other flywheel, which implied that rubber damper was very useful to reducing the vibration of the engine at X axis. 3. Hysteresis losses of X, Y, Z axis were greatly decreased in the flywheel with rubber damper on rim. 4. Damped oscillation effect on X and Y axis vibration above average peak vibration by the flywheel of rubber damper on rim was larger than those by the other flywheels. 5. Power spectrums of vibration at real and imaginery part were bi-mode type. The vibration frequency of rubber dampered flywheel which weight is decreased was slightly increased as compared with original flywheel.

  • In this paper, power transmission systems converts the shaft power of a Turbo-shaft Engine with Free Power Turbine into the generator power and be composed of a method being supplied in the thrust motor driving a propellers. Being used this, Gas turbine engine works to flat rating about 110 kw (147 shp) that the thrust motor be extremely supplied from the engine of 317shp. In this test equipment, the engine is installed with the flywheel being able to the damping function when happen to the varying load between gas turbine engine output-shaft and generator. Then if the flywheel of inertial moment be not considered, the generator and motor not get the required power from the engine for raising the load. Also it is certified that the engine works the abnormal operation. Hence the flywheel of inertial moment is determined the required range to do the performance analysis with the dynamic transient from the given and tested engine data. This system is able to get the required power after a mounting test with the redesigned flywheel.

  • Torsional vibrations, such as the gear rattle of the manual transmission in vehicle systems, are correlated with the firing stroke from the engine. These vibro-impacts can be examined based upon linear time-invariant analysis. In order to understand the gear dynamics, a specific manual transmission with a front-engine front-wheel drive configuration is investigated. A method to reduce the degrees of freedom is suggested based upon the eigensolutions and frequency response functions, which will lead to the development of an efficient matrix size. The dynamic characteristics of single- and dual-mass flywheels are then compared. The effect of the dual-mass flywheel is investigated based upon the mobility analysis, which will lead to understanding of the concepts for avoiding vibro-impacts. A linear time-invariant system model is examined by employing the effective clutch stiffness from a two-stage clutch damper. Thus, the relationship between the dynamic characteristics and the clutch damper can be predicted by assuming a combination of different stage stiffness levels.

  • The delamination in the filament-wound composite flywheel rotor often lowers the performance of the flywheel energy storage system. A conventional ring type hub usually causes tensile stresses on the inner surface of the composite rotor, resulting in lowering the maximum rotational speed of the rotor. In this work, the stress and strain distributions within a hybrid composite rotor were derived from the two-dimensional governing equation with the specified boundary conditions, and an optimum pressure at the inner surface of the rotor was proposed to minimize the strength ratio and maximize the storage energy. A split type hub was introduced to apply the calculated optimum pressure at the inner surface, and a spin test was performed up to 40,000 rpm to demonstrate the performance of the split type hub with radial and circumferential strains measured using a wireless telemetry system. From the analysis and the test, it was found that the split type hub successfully generates a compressive pressure on the inner surface of the rotor, which can enhance the performance of the composite rotor by lowering the strength ratio within the rotor.

  • Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) is defined as a high speed rotating flywheel system that can save surplus electric power. The FESS is proposed as an efficient energy storage system because it can accumulate a large amount of energy when it is operated at a high rotating speed and no mechanical problems are encountered. The FESS consists of a shaft, flywheel, motor/generator, bearings, and case. It is difficult to simulate rotor dynamics using common structure simulation programs because these programs are based on the 3D model and complex input rotating conditions. Therefore, in this paper, a program for the FESS based on the 2D FEM was developed. The 2D FEM can model easier than 3D, and it can present the multi-layer rotor with different material each other. Stiffness changing of the shaft caused by shrink fitting of the hub can be inputted to get clear solving results. The results obtained using the program were compared with those obtained using the common programs to determine any errors.

  • Waterhammer and slamming phenomena can occur when power is cut off due to reversal flow in pipeline and sudden close of check valve. Therefore analysis of reversal flow time, which means the time of reversal flow in pipeline due to pumping station blackout, is needed to protect facilities from waterhammer economically and efficiently. However systematic study on reversal flow time has not been done yet. So theory of reversal flow time analysis is proposed and verified with experiment using several parameters like pump specific speed, motor pole number, and characteristic curve of pipeline in this study.
