  • Innovative prestressed steel plate girders were presented in this study. Hot-rolled H beams were loaded first, then relatively high-strengthsteel plates were welded on the top and bottom flanges of preloaded H beams. Finally, high prestressed plate (HiPP) girder was manufactured by simply releasing prestresses of rolled beams. To verify prestress distributions induced in this girder, the experimental study was conducted and some guidelines to manufacture these girders effectively were addressed. In addition, methods to determine the allowable bending stress of HiPP girders and to check welding stresses were addressed for design of temporary bridges. The efficiency and effectiveness of the present girder were demonstrated through design examples of temporary bridges adapting the prestress-induced girder or the plate girder of the same section without prestresses. As a result, it has been found to be possible that the span length of HiPP girders for temporary bridges is longer than that of girders without prestresses.

  • Various PSC and steel-concrete composite railway bridges are being developed for short-medium spans with structural and economic efficiency. According to the design concept, the prestressed composite girder bridge has the advantages of being lightweight and having low girder depth, with the capacity for long spans. However, the dynamic behavior under a passing train is one of the critical issues concerning these railway bridges designed with more flexibility. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the modal parameters before performing dynamic analyses. In this paper, real-scale prestressed composite girders were fabricated as a test model and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequency and modal damping ratio. During the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer was applied to obtain frequency-response functions, and the modal parameters were also evaluated after the fracture of test models. With application of reliable properties from modal tests, the estimation of dynamic performances of prestressed composite girder railway bridges can be obtained from various parametric studies on dynamic behavior under the passage of a moving train.

  • A general composite section of precast and cast-in-place concrete with prestressed and nonprestressed reinforcements was analyzed to calculate residual stresses and loss of prestressing force caused by internal constraints of concrete long-term deformation. From the analytical results, equations to design additional prestressing force and to evaluate resistant moment of the composite section were proposed. The equations shows that the additional prestressing force can be over-estimated if the loss rate of the first prestressing force is over-estimated from the lumped sum of a design code. The analytical procedure with the proposed equations has been applied to a composite section using the AASHTO Type 5 girder. The loss rates of the additional prestressing force appling to the precast concrete girder was less than those appling to the composite girder. However, the resistant moment of the additional prestressing force on the composite girder was much larger than that on the precast concrete girder. The additional prestressing force appling to the composite section was very effective for strengthening of the prestressed concrete composite girder.

  • To ensure the serviceability requirements of PSC composite girder bridges, it is essential to predict the stresses and deformations of the structure under service load conditions. Stresses and deformations vary continuously with time due to the effects of creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. The importance of these time-dependent effects is much more pronounced in precast prestressed concrete structures built in stages than in those constructed in one operation. In this paper, time-dependent analyses for PSC composite bridges using 30m standard girders have been conducted considering with the variation of the times of introducing initial prestressing forces and casting concrete. A computer program has been developed for the time-dependent analysis of simple or continuous PSC composite girders and parametric studies are conducted. Based on the numerical results, it is investigated the long-term behaviors of PSC composite girder bridges and discussed the limitations of the current codes for the prestress loss.

  • The goal of this study is to develop an equivalent fatigue load model for prestressed concrete composite girder bridges in Korea. To meet this goal, the probabilistic characteristics of traffics which cause fatigue damage in bridges are properly modeled. An equivalent fatigue load inodel for prestressed concrete composite girder bridges with constant. amplitude and frequency is established. The model proposed in this paper is very simple to use and gives fairly good results.

  • A new type of bridge superstructures referred to as Steel-confined Prestressed Concrete Girder (SCP Girder) was developed, which is composed of concrete, steel plate, and prestressing tendon. The girder may maximize structural advantages of these components : thus, long span bridges with low height girder may be constructed. For the effective design and fabrication of the girder, the design software program was developed and the process of fabrication established. The experimental girder designed using the program was manufactured in actual size to confirm the fabric ability of the girder. Propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of the girder were verified through the load test.

  • This paper deals with the flexural performance of a composite girder system designed to readily form a composite section without a formwork and to easily realize multistage preflexing and prestressing. After a 3-Dimensional finite element modeling for construction stage analysis, the parametric numerical analysis was performed to analyse the stress distribution on the composite girder sections and the prestressing effects along with concrete pouring method and strand tensioning method. Based on the stress distribution analysis, a favorable construction stage model has been rationally chosen and then the ultimate flexural strengths were evaluated to conduct a comparative study, which exceed the nominal flexural strength suggested by the current design specification(ASD). It can be concluded that the proposed composite girder and fabrication procedure should have a sufficient structural performance.

  • This study was performed to evaluate joint behavior of prestressed concrete(PSC)-steel mixed girders through the flexural test of 14 beams according to embedded length, amount of reinforcing steel, stud arrangement, and prestressing force. All test beams were failed by turns of desertion of reinforcing steel, stud, and steel plate. From test results, prestressing force was more effective on performance of connection than stud arrangement and reinforcing steel. And the spacing of stud is also more effective than embedding length. This paper also presented 3D nonlinear analysis considering the slip of composite section as well as the static load tests of PSC-steel mixed girders. According to the slip modulus, the nonlinear analysis showed that the behavior of hybrid girders could be divided into three parts as full-composite, partial-composite and non-composite. However, the experimental results showed that the PSC-steel hybrid girders with shear connectors took the part of partial composite action in ultimate load stage. In addition, it was founded that stud shear connectors and welded reinforcements were contributed to improve the ultimate strength of hybrid girders for about 20%.

  • The Steel-Confined Prestressed Concrete Girder(SCP Girder) has been developed, which maximizes structural advantages of components (concrete, steel plate and tendon) and can be used to construct the middle or long span bridge with low-height girder. And recently, a continuous beam type of SCP Girder has been being developed to decrease size and self weight of girder in comparison with a simply-supported type. In this study, as part of developing the continuous beam type of SCP Girder, a new type of anchorage zone is proposed in order to address tendons effectively and decrease section size of SCP Girder efficiently. And also, the experimental test was carried out using a real scale specimen to examine the behavior of proposed anchorage zone.

  • In this paper, 6 span SCP continuous girder bridge's structural behavior were studied by analytic and experimental method To study structural behavior of SCP girder, we used PSC theory and steel girder theory. To examine slab concrete crack, concrete stress, and fatigue stress of steel, we achieved a static load and fatigue test. In the result, 6 span SCP girder bridge connected at the interior support about actuality bridge have enough structural capacity under service loads.
