  • Recently, renewable energy has been widely used as a source of wind energy and solar energy due to the shortage of fossil fuels and environmental problems. Against this backdrop, wind energy is emerging as an important energy source, and the wind power market is showing rapid growth worldwide. In this study, a high-efficiency wind turbine blade was designed with an integrated blade aerodynamic design for prior research on separate blades. The blade airfoil was applied as NACA 4418, and it was verified by comparing it with the analysis results to evaluate the newly designed blade.

  • Owing to the depletion of fossil energy, wind power is attracting attention as a promising environmentally friendly alternative energy source, because it is abundant, renewable, and non-polluting. Wind turbines are divided into horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) and vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) according to the direction of the rotating shaft. VAWTs have a low power generation efficiency, but are not affected by the wind direction and, thus, no yaw system is required and their structure is simple. Small VAWTs are attracting much attention because they can generate power even at low wind speeds. In this study, the output voltages and output currents of small VAWTs with gyromill type, hinge type and double door type blades capable of generating power even at low wind speeds were analyzed at variable wind speeds in the range of 1~11 m/s. At the maximum wind speed of 11m/s, the application of the double door type blades achieved 67% and 9% higher wind turbine output voltages than that of the gyromill type and hinge type blades, respectively. As regards the wind turbine output currents, the application of the double door type blades gave rise to 93% and 5% higher results than that of the gyromill type and hinge type blades, respectively. Through this study, the excellent output characteristics and commercialization potential of the double door type blades, which can generate power both at low and high wind speeds, were confirmed.

  • In this paper, an efficient modeling method of Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbine(HAWT) system is proposed. This method Is based on representing a HAWT system as a multi-body system with several rigid bodies i.e. rotor blade, low/high speed shaft, gear system, md generator. Also, simulation software WINSIM is developed to evaluate performance of wind turbine system. Simulation results show that the proposed modeling method and simulation software are efficient and reliable.

  • Rotor blades are important devices that affect the power performance, efficiency of energy conversion, and loading and dynamic stability of wind turbines. Therefore, considering the characteristics of a wind turbine system is important for achieving optimal blade design. When a design is complete, a design evaluation should be performed to verify the structural integrity of the proposed blade in accordance with international standards or guidelines. This paper presents a detailed exposition of the evaluation items and acceptance criteria required for the design certification of wind turbine blades. It also presents design evaluation results for a 2-MW blade (KR40.1b). Analyses of ultimate strength, buckling stability, and tip displacement were performed using FEM, and Miner's rule was applied to evaluate the fatigue life of the blade. The structural integrity of the KR40.1b blade was found to satisfy the design standards.

  • These days much efforts are being dedicated to wind power as a potential source of renewable energy. To maintain effective and uniform generation of energy, defect preservation of turbine blade is essential because it directly takes effects on the efficiency of power generation. For the effective maintenance, early measurements of blade defects are very important. However, current technologies such as ultrasonic waves and thermal imaging inspection methods are not suitable because of long inspection time and non-real time inspection. To supplement the problems, the study introduced a method for real time defect monitoring of a blade surface based on surface wave technology. We examined the effect of various parameters such as micro-cracks and peelings on the propagation of surface wave.

  • The performance of a vertical-type wind power generator system was predicted by CFD analysis. In the analysis, the reaction torque was calculated for a given rotational speed of the blades. The blade torque of a wind power system was obtained for various rotational speeds, and the generation power was calculated using the obtained torque and the rotational speed. The optimum generator specification, therefore, could be decided using the relationship between the generated power and the rotational speeds. The effects of the number of blades and blade shapes on the generation power were also investigated. Finally, the analysis results were compared with the experimental results.
