Temporal and spatial variations of nutrient elements (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate) in surface seawater off the west coast of Korea were investigated during three periods of field survey aboard R/V Eardo of KORDI (May 1995 and June 1996) and a patrol vessel of the National Maritime Police (November 1995). In general, the concentrations of nutrient elements were lowest in June and highest in November except for ammonia that showed the lowest concentration in May and the highest in November. The results tell us that the development of thermocline and tidal front restricts riverine and benthic supply of nutrient elements to surface waters in June in the offshore regions of the study area which become nutrient-depleted due to phytoplankton bloom in spring. In late fall (November) the level of nutrient concentrations of the surface waters of the study area become high due to vigorous vertical mixing within the water column, which supplies nutrient-enriched bottom water to the surface waters.

Sedimentological investigations on surface and suspended sediments were performed in Masan Bay of the South Sea in order to reveal recent changes in depositional environments concerning anthropogenic influence. Surface sediments had been classified as 3 sediment facies: mud, slightly gravelly mud, and gravelly mud. In general, mud facies with more than 60% of silt is predominant and slightly gravelly mud facies occurs at the watercourse of bay's central area. The silt-dominant mud faices appears to be predominant before and after dredging. Temperature and salinity changes during one tidal cycle for each season suggest that water columns were stratified without vertical mixing regardless of the season due to weak intensity of tide from the effect of geographical features. The effect of freshwater discharge from the land seems to be insignificant. The strongest current was observed during ebb tide in spring and autumn while observed during flood tide in summer and winter. Net sediment flux (fs) and net suspended sediment transport (Qs) for suspended sediment were determined by remaining drift developed here. Net suspended sediment transport loads were seaward with $62.02{\times}10^3kgm^{-1}$, $31.84{\times}10^3kgm^{-1}$ in spring and fall, respectively, and landward with $18.23{\times}10^3kgm^{-1}$, $3.22{\times}10^3kgm^{-1}$ in summer and winter, respectively.

Long-term trends and distribution patterns of water quality were investigated in the Yeoja Bay of South Sea, Korea from 1976 to 2010. Water samples were collected at 3 stations and physicochemical parameters were analyzed including water temperature, salinity, hydrogen ion concentration (pH), dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS) and nutrients. Spatial distribution patterns of temperature, pH and DO were not clear among stations but the seasonal variations were distinct except ammonium. The trend analysis by principal component analysis (PCA) during 31 years revealed the significant variations in water quality in the study area. Spatial water qualities were discriminated into 2 clusters by PCA; station cluster 1 and 2~3. Annual water qualities were clearly discriminated into 4 clusters by PCA. By this multi-variate analysis, the annual trends were summarized as the followings; water temperature, COD and SS tended to increase from late 1970's, decreased salinity, and increased phosphate from 1991 to 2001 and increased dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Water quality was showed by the input of fresh water same as those of Kyoungin coastal area, Asan coastal area, Choensoo bay, Gunsan coastal and Mokpo coastal area in the Yeoja Bay.
Vertical and horizontal distributions of chemical oceanograthic parameters were measured in Jinhae Bay in July, 1983. On the Masan-Gadeog section, high amounts of dissolved nitrates, ammonia, chlorophylla-a, and particulate carbon and nitrogen were observed in waters with low salinity. In the inner Masan Bay, high concentrations of dissolved ammonia and phosphates were shown. The C/N ratio in the surface waters was higer in the outer bay. Concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphates in the surface waters seemed to be sufficient for red tides to occur.

Studies of the distribution of micro-phytoplankton community and chlorophyll a concentration have focused on the vertical profiles of marine environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, sigma-t, light intensity, and dissolved oxygen in the continental slope on the east parts of East China Sea in the early summer of 2009. Water temperature showed a gradual reduction according to the depth. While the salinity was low in the surface layer showing a mixed down to the relatively subsurface layer, it was increased with an increase in the depth at the middle and bottom layers showing a maximum value at 150~200 m followed by a decreasing aspect afterwards, although the change was not large. The change of sigma-t was governed by the water temperature, and gradually increased in the surface layer with an increase in the depth, showing a value higher than in the surface layer by about 3 $kg/m^3$ at the bottom layer. Although the intensity of light was exponential reduced in the surface layer, the compensation depth was located at the depth of about 80m. The vertical profiles of chlorophyll a concentration was governed by the intensity rather than the changes in water temperature or salinity, exhibiting a maximum value at the compensation depth corresponding to 1% in the surface light intensity. The micro-phytoplankton communities consisted of 56 genera 103 species showing a relatively variety, while the standing crop was also changed to 112.0~470.0 cells/L in the pelagic environment, showing a maximum chlorophyll a concentration. Although a variety of dominant species appear at low dominance without dominant species appearing with a right-wing point in the phytoplankton communities, the silicoflagellate, Otactis otonaris at the station A and the dominance of 26% due to Leptocylindrus mediterraneus at the station C have been judged to be unusual. For community analysis of infinitesimal creatures such as phytoplankton of oligotrophic waters through the present study, ecology studies through vertical sample collection agreeing with the results of continuous observation such as identification of vertical distribution in a marine environment or of maximum chlorophyll layers have been considered rather than a survey method with intervals of a given depth such as surface, subsurface, middle and bottom layers.

In order to understand the present environmental condition and future impingement of Changjiang(Yangtze River) outflow upon the adjacent seas after the scheduled completion of the Sanxia (Three Gorges) Dam in 2009, we tried to estimate the mixing ratios among surface waters of three end-members: Changjiang Water (CW), Kuroshio Water (KW), and East China Sea Water (ECSW) using $^{228}Ra/^{226}Ra$ activity ratio and salinity as tracers. Water samples were collected from 32 stations in November 2005 (R/V Tamgu 3), from 20 stations in July 2006 (R/V Ocean 2000) and from 17 stations in August 2006 (R/V Ieodo) in the northern part of the East China Sea. Radium isotopes in ~300 liters of surface seawater were extracted onboard by filtering through manganese impregnated acrylic fibers and following coprecipitation as $Ba(Ra)SO_4$. Activities of radium isotopes were determined by a high purity germanium detector. Results show that the fraction of CW was in the range of 1-23% in the study area, while KW was in the range of 0-30 % and ECSW 58-100 %. The eastward plume of Changjiang outflow, commonly observed in satellite images during summer and also displayed by the eastward-decreasing CW fraction in this study, could be attributed to Ekman transport caused by the SE monsoon prevailing in this region during summer. Results of this study showed that in the drought season, there was a little or no fraction of CW in the study area. Concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) showed strong positive relationship with the fraction of CW, suggesting Changjiang as the major source of nitrogen. The mixing curve of DIN indicates the removal of nitrate by biological uptake during the mixing of CW with ambient seawater in the study area.

Accurate evaluation of sea-to-air $CO_2$ flux and its variability is crucial information to the understanding of global carbon cycle and the prediction of atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration. $fCO_2$ observations are sparse in space and time in the East Sea. In this study, we derived high resolution time series of surface $fCO_2$ values in the southwest East Sea, by feeding sea surface temperature (SST), salinity (SSS), chlorophyll-a (CHL), and mixed layer depth (MLD) values, from either satellite-observations or numerical model outputs, to three machine learning models. The root mean square error of the best performing model, a Random Forest (RF) model, was $7.1{\mu}atm$. Important parameters in predicting $fCO_2$ in the RF model were SST and SSS along with time information; CHL and MLD were much less important than the other parameters. The net $CO_2$ flux in the southwest East Sea, calculated from the $fCO_2$ predicted by the RF model, was $-0.76{\pm}1.15mol\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, close to the lower bound of the previous estimates in the range of $-0.66{\sim}-2.47mol\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$. The time series of $fCO_2$ predicted by the RF model showed a significant variation even in a short time interval of a week. For accurate evaluation of the $CO_2$ flux in the Ulleung Basin, it is necessary to conduct high resolution in situ observations in spring when $fCO_2$ changes rapidly.
Temporal and spatial distributions of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and turbidity were investigated at seven sites in the upper regions of brackish Lake Sihwa with a limited water exchange, from March to October 2005. During the study period, salinity and temperature varied $0.1{\sim}29.9\;psu$ and $4.7{\sim}28.1^{\circ}C$, respectively, depending on seasons and sites sampled. A distinct halocline profile showing the maximum density gradient (difference over $20\;psu\;m^{-1}$ between surface and bottom layers) was observed during the rainy season, due to the decrease of salinity in surface layers by freshwater inflow. This result implies that rainfall event is the important factor forming the halocline. On the other hand, the depth and location of haloeline varied with the amount of seawater through the sluice gates and the operation systems (inflow or outflow). High DO (over 300% saturation) was observed at surface layer above the halocline in April when red tide occurred, whereas low DO (below 20% saturation) was at the bottom layer below the halocline in the rainy season. Turbidity ranged $1.5{\sim}80.3\;NTU$ showing the maximum turbidity at the layers above or upper the halocline. As a result, the distributions of DO and turbidity in the upper regions of brackish Lake Sihwa were largely affected by the variation of salinity. Also, when the halocline was formed, the water quality between upper and lower water layers may be expected completely different. This study suggests that the physicochemical characteristics of water in the brackish regions are closely associated with the causes of eutrophication such as red tide and DO deficit.
Fish eggs and larvae in the western waters of Korea are surveyed during the periods from February to August in 1982. Six species of eggs and forty-two species of larvae are occurred in the survey area. The dominant species occurred during the study periods are Ammodytes personatus, Enedrias sp., Engraulis japonica, Callionymus sp., Gobiidae, etc. Major spawning month and ground of each species are estimated from the data, i.e., occurrence month and abundance of eggs and larvae by survey month and area, as well as the optimum water temperature and salinity for spawning.
In order to investigate water quality factors controlling chlorophyll-$a$ concentrations, the by-daily monitoring was conducted from February to November 2010 in 4 stations of Masan Bay. Seasonal variability in physico-chemical factors was mainly controlled by freshwater loading as a result of precipitation: chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids and nutrient concentrations rapidly increase during the heavy rainy season, whereas they decrease in the dry season. From late winter to mid spring, phosphorus and silica sources relative to Redfield ratio were probably functioned as limiting factor for phytoplankton flourishing in surface waters, but nitrogen concentration during mid-spring to autumn might be responsible for the increase of phytoplankton biomass. The multiple regression analysis revealed that variations in chlorophyll-$a$ concentration may be strongly correlated with changes of water temperature, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved inorganic phosphorus in spring, and salinity, chemical oxygen demand and precipitation in summer. Consequently, in the Masan Bay, a heavy rainfall event is an important factor to determine changes of biotic and abiotic factors, and in addition the dynamics of chlorophyll-$a$ concentration are strongly affected by changes of hydrological factors, especially water temperature, precipitation and nutrients.
