  • In this study, the ground impedance is measured using the standing wave method in a free field on the grass, the soil, and the ground covered with asphalt and cement. And the excess attenuation of sound is investigated. Results are obtained in the frequency range between 300Hz and 1000Hz. There are very good agreements between the results of the measured ground impedance and the prediction of Delanyand Bazley. The ground impedance is increased in order the grass, the soil, the asphalt and the cement road, decreased with frequency for each the ground. The excess attenuation of sound is mainly determined by the ground impedance. The experimental results of the excess attenuation over the different types and the microphone heights are compared with the theoretical values.

  • To examine the space variances of the sound pressure level for five different types (normal frequency spacing) of reverberation rooms, simulations were conducted using the Finite Element Method. In case of infinite surface impedance, nonrectangular reverberation rooms showed small Standard Deviations across the band of frequency, and in case of finite surface impedance, ideal rectangular reverberation rooms showed the similar results as those in irregular shaped reverberation rooms.

  • The acoustic performances of steel-wire sound absorbing materials with different thicknesses and bulk densities were investigated experimentally. The well-known two-cavity method was used to measure the characteristic impedance, propagation constant and absorption coefficient. The normal absorption coefficients measured by two-cavity method agreed well with those by the two-microphone impedance tube method. The experimental results showed that the magnitude of the absorption coefficient and the frequency range of the maximum absorption coefficient were controllable by changing the thickness and bulk density of the steel-wire. Therefore, the steel-wires obtained from the crushed tire chips could be used as a good absorbing material.

  • We have been setting up experiments on propagation of shock waves generated by the pulsed laser ablation. One side of a thin metal foil is subjected to laser ablation as a shock wave propagates through the foil. The shock wave, which penetrates through the foil is reflected by an acoustic impedance which causes the metal foil to high-strain rate deform. This short time physics is captured on an ICCD camera. The focus of our research is applying shock wave and deformation of the thin foil from the ablation to accelerating micro-particles to a very high speed.

  • In this study, the multi perforated plate is used to reduce the compressor noise in the low frequency band inside the refrigerator machine room. To predict the sound absorption results, the impedance of the sound absorption material is measured. Using the measured impedance results, it is confirmed that the results used for FEM analysis is almost similar to the experimental values. The sound-absorbing structure that can operate in the target frequency band inside the refrigerator machine room is designed by controlling the hole diameter and arrangement in the perforated plate. The effect of reducing noise in the low frequency band is confirmed by applying perforated plate-based sound absorbing structures to the machine room.

  • The piezoelectric composites had many advantages in comparison with conventional piezoelectric ceramics and piezopolymers for ultrasonic transducers used in NDT and in medical ultrasionic imaging. The electromechanical coupling coefficient should be high and the acoustic impedance should be low in these applications. However, the cross-coupling with spurious oscillations caused by laterally running plate waves exhibited complex motions in the surface of piezoelectric composites with coarse lateral spatial scale. The thickness mode electromechanical coupling coefficient of 1-3type of piezoelectric compoistes were 0.36 to 0.64, and the acoustic impedance of them were 9.8 to 22.7 MRayl. The lateral resonance frequency of 1-3 type piezoelectric composites shifted to high frequency region with decreasing lateral spatial scale.

  • With the advent of submarine detection technology using low-frequency active sonar there is a call for a new submarine stealth device that can replace the existing passive anechoic tiles. Proposed in this study is a low-frequency echo reduction technique based on active impedance matching, which employs a tile projector designed to cover a wide area such as the surface of a ship. To judge the feasibility of the active impedance matching technique finite-element simulations of low-frequency echo reduction are performed. Based on the analysis, a tile projector is designed, fabricated, and tested in an acoustic tank for its low-frequency echo reduction performance.
