  • Degradations of durability and aesthetic performance in concrete happen during service life due to surface deterioration and dirt stains. Recently, many researches have been performed on self-cleaning and surface enhancement through surface impregnant using photocatalytic reaction with VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) removal. This paper is for preliminary study on surface impregnation with silicate and photocatalysis - $TiO_2$. For the work, two types of silicate based impregnants(CS - Coloidal Silica and SC - Sodium Alumina Silicate) are considered. Several tests for viscosity and surface tension are performed, and pull-off test on impregnated concrete is performed. For the surface impregnated concrete, $TiO_2$ is absorbed through submerging and spraying conditions. Through compressive strength test and SEM analysis, it is evaluated that spraying $TiO_2$ on surface impregnated concrete after 30min. of drying period is very effective both for strength enhancement and surface densification.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the bond strength of polycarbonate brackets can be increased through surface treatment. Methods: One hundred polycarbonate brackets (Alice) were bonded to bovine incisors with light-cured adhesive. The bracket bases were treated with one of three methods; sandblasting, plastic conditioner application, and combined treatment with sandblasting and plastic conditioner. The brackets without any suraace treatment served as the control. The shear bond strength was tested with a universal testing machine, and failure pattern was assessed with the adhesive remnant index. Results: The shear bond strength in all experimental groups was higher than that of the control group (p < 0.001). The group treated with plastic conditioner after sandblasting showed statistically higher shear bond strength than the sandblasting only group to (p < 0.05). The group treated with plastic conditioner after sandblasting showed higher shear bond strength than plastic conditioner only group, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The above results suggest that the surface treatments of polycarbonate bracket is mandatory to improve bond strength, and the most effective method is an application of plastic conditioner after sandblasting.

  • Objective: The need to bond orthodontic brackets onto various alloys has increased because of the increasing demand for adult orthodontic treatment. This study tried to evaluate the shear bond strength between gold alloy and metal bracket using light emitting diode (LED) light curing after metal primer and silicoating surface conditioning. Methods: Half of the type III gold alloy plates were treated with sandblasting with aluminum oxide and metal primer containing 4-META. the other half were treated with silica and silane. Metal brackets were bonded with Transbond XT light curing adhesive on these plates and shear bond strength were evaluated 1 hour, 6 hours, and 24 hours later. The differences of shear bond strength between groups were evaluated with two-way ANOVA. Results: The results showed higher bond strength in the silicoating group and a tendency of bond strength increase over time. Conclusions: When using LED curing lights for metal bracket bonding to alloy surfaces, long curing time and silicoating can produce a reliable bonding strength.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the application of nano-structured alumina coating to the surface of Y-TZP could enhance the bond strength with resin cement. Materials and methods: A total of 80 zirconia plates were prepared and divided into four groups. : 1) airborne particle abrasion treatment (A) : 2) Rocatec treatment after airborne particle abrasion (R) : 3) nano-structured alumina coating treatment after polishing (PC) and 4) nano-structured alumina coating after airborne particle abrasion (AC). Alumina coating was formed by the hydrolysis of aluminium nitride (AlN) powder and heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$. Coating patterns were observed with FE-SEM. Resin block was bonded to treated zirconia ceramics using resin cement. The shear bond strengths were measured before and after thermocycling. Results: The FE-SEM images show a dense and uniform nano-structured alumina coating structure, which enhances shear bond strength by increasing micro mechanical interlocking to resin cement. PC and AC groups showed higher shear bond strengths than A and R groups before and after thermocycling. A and R groups displayed significant drops in shear bond strength after thermocycling. However, PC and AC groups did not show any meaningful decreases in shear bond strength after thermocycling. Conclusion: Treatment of Y-TZP ceramics with nano-structured alumina coating could significantly increase their shear bond strength.

  • The effect of substrate surface roughness and sintering temperature on the adhesion strength of Ag-based thick film conductors formed on AlN substrates with excellent thermal conductivity was studied. The adhesion strength of the thick-film conductor manufactured using an AlN substrate having a surface roughness (Ra) of 0.5 was higher than that of a thick-film conductor manufactured using a substrate having a surface roughness greater or smaller than this. In the case of a substrate with a surface roughness of less than 0.5, the contact area between the Ag thick film conductor and the substrate was relatively smaller than that of a substrate with a surface roughness of 0.5, resulting in a lower adhesive strength. On the other hand, when a substrate having a surface roughness of more than 0.5 was used, it was found that the conductor film was not completely adhered to the substrate, and as a result, it was found that the adhesive strength was small. In addition, it was found that the surface smoothness of the Ag-based thick film conductor film obtained by sintering at 850℃ was the best compared to the smoothness of the conductor film obtained by sintering at different sintering temperatures, and as a result, it was found that the adhesive strength of the conductor film was the highest.
