In Vitro Antioxidative Activity and Polyphenol and Tocopherol Contents of Bugak with Lotus Root, Dried Laver, or Perilla Leaf (연근, 김, 깻잎 부각의 산화방지 활성, 폴리페놀 화합물과 토코페롤 함량)

  • In vitro antioxidative activities and antioxidants of the lotus root, dried laver, and perilla leaf bugak, Korean traditional fried cuisine, were evaluated. The bugak was prepared with fermented glutinous rice batter and unroasted sesame oil for use in the pan-frying. The perilla leaf bugak showed the highest radical scavenging activity and reducing power, with the lowest in the lotus root bugak. The antioxidative activity of the blanched lotus root was lower than the dried laver or the perilla leaf. Polyphenol content was higher in the perilla leaf bugak than the lotus root or the dried laver bugak, and tocopherols were mainly derived from frying oil. The antioxidative activity of bugak was correlated well with polyphenol contents, but there was no correlation between tocopherol contents and the antioxidative activity.

Effect of Potato Polyuphenolics on the Hyperlipidemia in Rats (식이성 고지혈증에 미치는 감자 폴리페놀의 영향)

  • Effect of potato polyphenolic compound on the concentrations of serum and liver lipids, serum glucose, and urine protein was investigated in Sprague Dawley rats by feeding a diet containing 0.5% of cholesterol for 2 weeks. Polyphenolic compound extracted from potato (Solanum tuberosum variety Dejima) was supplemented at a 0.5% level in the basal diet or the cholesterol diet. The supplementation of potato polyphenolic compounds decreased slightly the concentrations of total cholesterol and VLDL+LDL-cholesterol in serum, and atherosclerotic index in rats fed the cholesterol diet, while those measurements were not altered by the supplementation of potato polyphenolic compounds in rats fed the basal diet. In the rats fed the basal diet or the cholesterol diet containing potato polyphenolic compounds, urine protein increased by 12% and 27% at 1st week, respectively, but this change was not seen at 2nd week. The concentration of serum glucose, however, was not significantly different in the dietary groups.

Polyphenol and Flavonoid Contents, Antioxidative and Cancer Cell Inhibitory Effects of Domestic Tomatoes (우리나라 토마토의 폴리페놀 및 플라보노이드 함량, 항산화활성 및 암세포 억제활성)

  • This study was carried out for elucidating bioacive properties of three domestic tomato cultivars. Total polyphenol and flavonoid of Rafito, Momotaro and Medison were 10.44±1.84, 11.14±1.95, 12.26±1.82 and 3.62±0.57, 3.24±0.35, 3.87±0.60 mg/g(dry weight) respectively. Domestic tomatoes showed DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. All of tomatoes had no cytotoxicity for normal liver cell, but showed remarkable growth inhibitory effect against cervical cancer cell and liver cancer cell. These results suggested that domestic tomatoes can be used as a bioactive food material.

Effects of Green Tea Polyphenol and Vitamin C on Type 2 Diabetic Rats Induced by Low Dose Streptozotocin Following High Fat Diet (고지방식이와 저용량 스트렙토조토신으로 유도된 2형 당뇨병 흰쥐에서 녹차 폴리페놀과 비타민 C 병합 투여 효과)

  • This study investigated the effects of green tea polyphenol and vitamin C on type 2 diabetes mellitus by administering polyphenon 60 (P60) and sodium ascorbate (SA) to diabetic rats induced by high fat diet/low-dose streptozotocin. The experimental group was divided into five different groups: non-diabetic control group (NC), diabetes control group (DC), diabetes+P60 group (DM+P60), diabetes+SA group (DM+SA), and diabetes+P60+SA group (DM+P60+SA). P60 and SA were dissolved in 0.1% drinking water. After P60 and SA were administered for 16 weeks, fasting blood glucose, plasma insulin, serum triglyceride, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine levels as well as kidney alkaline phosphatase (AP) and ${\gamma}$-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) activities were measured. Fasting blood glucose level increased 5-fold in the DC group compared to the NC group. In the DM+P60 group, fasting blood glucose level decreased by 14%. In the DM+P60+SA group, fasting blood glucose level decreased by 28% compared to the DC group, whereas the DM+SA group did not show any significant difference. The homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance index increased in the DC group and decreased in the DM+P60+SA group compared to the DC group. Serum creatinine level increased in the DC group, but decreased by 17% in the DM+P60 group and by 43% in the DM+P60+SA group compared to the DC group. The serum BUN level increased in the DC group, but decreased by 41% in the DM+P60+SA group compared to the DC group. Kidney GGT and AP activities decreased in the DC group compared to the NC group; however, they were reversed by DM+P60+SA group. These results show that combined administration of both green tea polyphenol and vitamin C had better effects on improving blood glucose level, insulin resistance, serum triglyceride level, and protecting kidneys than administration of either green tea polyphenol or vitamin C alone in the context of type 2 diabetes.

Changes of Total Polyphenol Content and Antioxidant Activity of Ligularia fischeri Extracts with Different Microwave-Assisted Extraction Conditions (마이크로웨이브 추출조건에 따른 곰취 추출물의 총 폴리페놀 함량 및 항산화작용의 변화)

  • This study was undertaken in order to compare reflux extraction(RE) and microwave-assisted extraction(MAE) in extraction efficiency and establish optimum microwave extraction conditions in obtaining Ligularia fischeri extracts. A considerable reduction in extraction time was accomplished by MAE. When 70% methanol 50% methanol 70% ethanol, or 50% ethanol was used, MAE extract contained equal levels of soluble solid and total polyphenol as obtained by RE. The optimum microwave-assisted extraction conditions for Ligularia fischeri were achieved by 120∼150 watts of microwave energy and 4∼8 minutes of extraction time. No significant changes were found in antioxidant activity with DPPH scavenging method over the variation of microwave energy or extraction time. The use of diluted methanol or ethanol improved soluble solid content(30%), total polyphenol content(2.7%) and antioxidant activity(68%).

Antioxidant Activities from Pericarp and Flesh Extracts of Citrus spp. in China (중국(中國) 유품종(柚品種)(Citrus spp.)의 과피(果皮)와 과육(果肉)의 항산화물질(抗酸化物質) 효과(效果))

  • 중국유(中國柚)의 주요성분은 비타민 C가 레몬보다 10배나 많이 함유되어 있고 또한 과피 안쪽에 펙틴 성분이 다량으로 함유되어 있다. 특히 과피가 일반 감귤류 보다 10배 이상 두꺼워 비타민P의 ?량 또한 다량으로 함유되어 있다. 즉, 유기산, 비타민P와 비타민C가 매우 많이 함유되어 있어서 예로부터 중국에서는 감기와, 피부노화, 피로를 방지하는데 사용되어져 왔으며 이러한 효능은 유기산에서도 많이 발생되었다. 그 밖에 비타민B군과 당질, 단백질등이 다른 감귤류 품종보다 많고, 모세혈관을 보호하는 헤스페리딘(비타민P)이 다량으로 함유되어 있어서 심혈관 질환 장애와 뇌졸증, 뇌출혈 등을 억제하는 효과를 가지고 있다. 또한 몸 안에 쌓여 있는 노폐물 등을 밖으로 배출시켜주는 효과가 양호하여 피부미용에 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 실험에서는 중국유(中國柚)의 항산화활성과 총 폴리페놀 함량을 조사하였던 바, 과육보다 과피에서 폴리페놀 함량이 높게 나타났으며 항산화 활성도 과피에서 매우 양호한 결과를 나타내었다. 중국유(中國柚)의 품종별로 보면 과피가 두껍고 과육이 붉은색을 띈 품종에서 항산화 효과가 더 양호한 반응을 나타내었다. 이러한 결과는 과육에 함유되어있는 안토시아닌의 함량의 차이인 것으로 생각된다. 특히 과피가 과육의 추출과정에서 에탄올보다 메탄올 추출물에서 더 양호한 결과를 보였다. 이러한 결과들로 미루어볼 때 중국유(中國柚)의 항산화 활성은 천연화장품의 신소재로서의 가치를 가지고 있다고 판단된다.

Effect of Polyphenol Compounds from Persimmon Leaves (Diospyros kaki folium) on Allergic Contact Dermatitis (감잎(Diospyros kaki folium) Polyphenol 화합물군이 알레르기성 접촉피부염에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to investigate antiallergic contact hypersensitivity of the polyphenol fractons isolated from persimmon leaves (Diospyros kaki folum). The result of the allergic contact dermatitis is a common skin disease resulting from specific immunologic sensitization due to topically applied allergens. Here the contact hypersensitivity was assayed and obdominal skin morphological changes including mast cells were examined. At contact hypersensitivity assay, less right ear swelling occured in the polyphenol fraction I, II and III groups compared to the control group. The number of mast cells was significantly decreased in the sample groups than the control group.
