  • Oil formation rate, composition of crude oil and formation of side products such as ${\alpha}-methyl$ styrene, ethyl benzene, benzene, toluene, dimer and trimer on thermal degradation of polystyrene were affected by various factors. Especially, formation of organic residue formed during reaction gave an important influence on formation of oil and composition of crude oil. Also, composition of formed crude oil showed a significant difference on reaction time. These results were caused by organic residue and carbonized solid formed during continuous reaction. Increase of residue and carbonized solid gave a decrease of yield of styrene and an increase of formation of ${\alpha}-methyl$ styrene, ethyl benzene, benzene, toluene. New reaction system was proposed for continuous operation at the thermal degradation of polystyrene.

  • To optimize the properties of compounds, effective mixing is of importance to achieve adequate distribution and dispersion of filler particles. A variety of mixing elements have been used for twin-screw extruders in order to improve the mixing efficiency. In this study, the effects of 10 screw configurations on the filler dispersion were investigated for the calcium carbonate filled polystyrene processed in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The state of filler dispersion was characterized by equipped with a photodiode. The experimental results indicated that the type and position of mixing elements primarily affected the degree of filler dispersion.

  • Single-beam acoustic tweezers that are capable of manipulating micron-size particles in a non-contact manner have been used in many biological and biomedical applications. Current single-beam acoustic tweezer systems developed for in vitro experiments consist of a function generator and a power amplifier, thus the system is bulky and expensive. This configuration would not be suitable for in vivo and clinical applications. Thus, in this paper, we present a portable single-beam acoustic tweezer system and its performances of trapping and manipulating micron-size objects. The developed system consists of an Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip and two pulsers, and parameters such as center frequency and pulse duration were controlled by a Personal Computer (PC) via a USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface in real-time. It was shown that the system was capable of generating the transmitting pulse up to 20 MHz, and producing sufficient intensity to trap microparticles and cells. The performance of the system was evaluated by trapping and manipulating 40 ㎛ and 90 ㎛ in diameter polystyrene particles.

  • Recycling of red mud from the aluminium manufacturing process was investigated to be utilized as plastic fillers. High density polyethylene(HDPE), low density polyethylene(LDPE) and polypropylene(PP) were found to be the suitable plastic material for which red mud can be used as fillers. With the addition of red mud the plastic showed red brown color. As the ratio of amount of red mud to plastic increased, the tensile strength increased while the Izod impact strength decreased. About five percent of ethylene vinyl alcohol(EVA) was needed as an additive to prevent the lowering of impact strength. Maleic anhydride modified polypropylene was effective for reduction of impact strength lowering of PP. Mixed waste plastics containing LDPE, HDPE, PP, polystyrene and ABS could also accommodate red mud as fillers. In this case, significant loss in mechanical properties were observed due to immiscibility between the components. Ethylene propylene rubber(EPR) and styrene butadiene styrene block copolymer (SBS) could be used to improve the impact properties of the commingled waste plastics.

  • In this study, polystyrene hollow microspheres were prepared via optimized purifying steps for the reuse of waste polystyrene. PS/PVA double layered hollow microspheres were prepared using the multiple emulsion ($W_1/O/W_2$) method with recycled polystyrene. The sonication treatment at the first stage of $W_1/O$ emulsion formation was very important factor of control of particle size and its distribution. When sonication was treated for 20 seconds, the average particle size and distribution were $1.35{\mu}m$ and $0.8{\mu}m{\sim}2.8{\mu}m$, respectively. The double layered hollow microspheres that have smaller and uniformed particle size distribution were manufactured when gelatin or Tween 80 was used as surfactants in the $W_2$ phase.

  • Emeraldine salt of polyaniline-dodecylbenzenesulfdnic acid (PANI-DBSA) in organic solvents such as toluene and xylene was obtained by a direct one-step emulsion polymerization technique. When the molar ratio of DBSA to aniline monomer was 1.5:1, its solubility and electric property showed a maximum value and then the solid contents of PANI-DBSA was 8 wt% in toluene. The cast film of PANI-DBSA with no binder was obtained on glass or plastic substrates under ambient conditions. PANI solution can be also easily blended with polyurethane and polystyrene polymers in toluene. Improved electrical performance up to 5 S/cm was achieved with good light-transmittance up to 70% at 500 m thickness. They also showed more homogeneous morphology than that prepared with PANI-DBSA kom aqueous dispersion polymerization. The partially dispersed PANI-DBSA showed particles sizes of 50-400 m in organic solvents and their XRD pattern were observed from the powder sample.

  • In order to improve the low impact resistance of polystyrene without harming its transparency the styrene monomer was copolymerized with transparent butyl acrylate (BA), and methylmethacrylate (MMA) to obtained a poly(styrene-co-butylacrylate) P(SM-co-BA) and a terpolymer copolymer P(SM-co-BA-co-MMA). The polymers were then cross-linked with the aid of a cross-linking agent dicumylperoxide (DCP), and their mechanical and optical properties were tested. It was found that the contents of monomers and DCP affect the mechanical, thermal, and optical properties of the polymers. An increase in BA contents in P(SM-co-BA) and P(SM-BA-MMA) improved the mechanical strength, but the optical properties remained the same with some exception for P(SM-co-BA). An increase in the DCP contents improved the mechanical but found losses in the optical properties.

  • The residual stress and birefringence in injection-molded plastic parts can be divided into the flow-induced residual stress and birefringence produced in flowing stage, the thermally-induced residual stress and birefringence produced in cooling stage. However, the physics involved in the generation of the thermally-induced residual stress and birefringence still remains to be understood. Because polymer experiences viscoelastic history near the glass-transition temperature it is hard to model the entire process. Volume relaxation phenomenon was included to predict the final thermally-induced residual stress and birefringence in quenched plastic parts more accurately. The present study focused on comparing the predicted values far thermally-induced residual stress and birefringence with and without volume relaxation behavior (or free volume theory) under free and constrained quenching conditions. As a result, tile residual stress remained as a tensile stress at the center and as a compressible stress near the surface for the free quenching cases. In contract the residual stress remained as a compressible stress at the center and as a tensile stress near the surface fur the constrained quenching cases. The residual birefringence remained as minus values at the center and as plus values near the surface for the free quenching cases. Interestingly the residual birefringence showed minus values in entire zone for the constrained quenching cases. In the prediction of birefringence only the case including free volume theory showed the correct result for the distribution of birefringence in thickness direction.

  • Building insulation materials use for the purpose of energy saving. Insulation materials can be classified inorganic and organic insulation materials. Inorganic insulation is used for fire resistive performance parts and organic insulation is used for thermal performance parts. Meanwhile, organic insulation is due to toxic gas emission in fire. Inorganic insulation is too heavy and low thermal performance than organic materials. This study is focused on evaluation of the physical properties of inorganic foam material using industrial by-products such as waste glass powder and fly ash. From the test result, inorganic foam materials for the applicability of fire-resistance and insulation light-weight materials.
