  • It is required to construct the pipelines to eliminate pressure drop at the end of transmission line under limitation of maximum operation pressure of 6.86 MPa, however, it highly costs to build the pipelines and takes time-consuming job. Higher operation pressure compared to current operating pressure has been considered to resolve the problem of pressure drop without modification of the existing pipelines and facilities. As a result of the integrity evaluation, the existing pipelines can be operated up to 7.85 MPa in terms of wall thickness and have higher Charpy impact energy than required value in the ASME B31.8. However, Increment of operation pressure gives rise to increase potential impact area if the pipelines burst due to third party damages.

  • Lithium-ion batteries have been used for high density energy storage system due to the features such as low self-discharge rate. And the unit cell battery with the voltage less than 4V is recommended to use the series connections for a high voltage charger. When batteries are charged or discharged with series connection, there may be an explosion or degradation of unit cell battery owing to undistributed internal resistance of cell battery. therefore, the voltages of unit cell batteries should be monitored to prevent an overcharging and a deep discharging. This paper introduces the implementation of CVM (Cell Voltage Monitoring) system that can transmit the 12 channel's information including voltages and temperatures with the 12-bits resolutions and the transmission speed of 192 kbps.

  • Management of gas safety is becoming important with increasing use of gas facilities. U-safety system is being promoted as part of national management of gas, and thus real-time and in-situ gas sensor should be developed. Detection method for When the gas sensor is installed in gas conduit, explosion may be likely, because hydrocarbon gases is usually used the difference of thermal resistance between reference and working electrode. Therefore, it is required to detect the hydrocarbons, such as $CH_4$ and CO, at room temperature via electrochemically catalytic reaction. In this study, Pt nanoparticle was doped on the porous gold powder by electrolytic plating method, and then it was used as catalytic electrode for CO oxidation. For Pt/PAu electrode, approximately 21% of CO conversion was obtained. It is noted that Pt/PAu electrode could be used to react the oxidation of hydrocarbon gases at room temperature via applying of external voltage.

  • A magnetic cable that can safely deliver high frequency AC electric power in flammable or sensitive workplaces by preventing from arcs and electric shocks is firstly proposed in this paper. Several new magnetic cable structures with magnetic shields, which are composed of such cancel coil, cancel copper plate, and cancel copper pipe, were compactly implemented by considering and analyzing fringe field and thus the parallel leakage flux is drastically reduced. The output power and efficiency of a prototype magnetic cable with 1.5 m length and 5 cm gap were measured as 353.8W and 68%, where the source current and switching frequency were 10 $A_{rms}$ and 20 kHz, respectively. The proposed magnetic cables are fully analyzed and verified by finite-element method (FEM) simulations and experiments. The results are in a good agreement.

  • Rock blasting is utilized in various fields such as mining, tunneling, and the construction of underground structures. The role of rock blasting technology has became increasingly significant with the growing utilization of underground cavity. Blast hole pressure, generated during rock blasting, is a critical variable directly impacting factors such as crushing and blast vibration. It stands out as one of the most important parameters for assessing explosive performance and predicting blasting effects. While blast hole pressure has been studied by several researches, comparisons are challenging due to variations in experimental conditions such as explosive type, charge, and blasting conditions. In this study, blast hole pressure sensors and observation hole pressure sensors were developed to measure pressure during single-hole blasting, The experimental results were then used to discuss the propagation characteristics of pressure around the blast hole and the corresponding blast vibration.

  • Since the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks in 2001, terror, military attack, or man-made disaster caused impact, explosion, and fire accident have frequently occured on civil infrastructures. However, structural behavior researches on major Prestressed Concrete (PSC) infrastructures such as bridges, tunnels, Prestressed Concrete Containment Vessel (PCCVs), and LNG tanks under extreme loading are significantly lacking. Especially, researches on possible secondary fire scenarios after terror, bombing, collision of vehicles and vessels on concrete structures have not been performed domestically where most of the past researches related to extreme loadings on structures focused on an independent isolated extreme loading scenario. Due to the outcry of public concerns and anxiety of potential terrorist attacks on major infrastructures and structures, a study is urgently needed at this time. Therefore, in this study, the bi-directional prestressed concrete $1400{\times}1000{\times}300mm$ panels applied with 430 kN prestressing force using unbonded prestressing thread bars were experimentally evaluated under impact, fire, and impact-fire combined loadings. Due to test site restrictions, impact tests were performed with 14 kN impactor with drop heights of 10m and 3.5 m to evaluate impact resistance capacity. Also, fire and impact-fire combined loading were tested using RABT fire loading curve. The measured residual strength capacities of PSC and RC specimens applied with impact, fire, impact-fire combined loadings were compared with the residual strength capacity of undamaged PSC and RC specimens for evaluation. The study results can be used as basic research data for related research areas such as protective design and numerical simulation under extreme loading scenarios.

  • The development of lithium-ion battery (LIB) technologies and their application in the field of large-scale power sources, such as electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid EVs, and plug-in EVs require enhanced reliability and superior safety. The main components of LIBs should withstand to the inevitable heating of batteries during high current flow. Carbonate solvents that contribute to the dissociation of lithium salts are volatile and potentially combustible and can lead to the thermal runaway of batteries at any abuse conditions. Recently, an interest in nonflammable materials is greatly growing as a means for improving battery safety. In this review paper, novel approaches are described for designing highly safe electrolytes in detail. Non-flammability of liquid electrolytes and battery safety can be achieved by replacing flammable organic solvents with thermally resistive materials such as flame-retardants, fluorinated organic solvents, and ionic liquids.

  • Nuclear fuel cladding used in a nuclear power plant must possess superior oxidation resistance in the coolant atmosphere of high temperature/high pressure. However, as was the case for the critical LOCA (loss-of-coolant accident) accident that took place in the Fukushima disaster, there is a risk of hydrogen explosion when the nuclear fuel cladding and steam reacts dramatically to cause a rapid high-temperature oxidation accompanied by generation of a huge amount of hydrogen. Hence, an active search is ongoing for an alternative material to be used for manufacturing of nuclear fuel cladding. Studies are currently aimed at improving the safety of this cladding. In particular, ceramic-based nuclear fuel cladding, such as SiC, is receiving much attention due to the excellent radiation resistance, high strength, chemical durability against oxidation and corrosion, and excellent thermal conduction of ceramics. In the present study, cladding with $SiC_f/SiC$ protective films was fabricated using a process that forms a matrix phase by polymer impregnation of polycarbosilane (PCS) after filament-winding the SiC fiber onto an existing Zry-4 cladding tube. It is analyzed the oxidation and microstructure of the metal cladding with $SiC_f/SiC$ composite protective films using a drop tube furnace for thermal shock test.

  • Submarines, which have been called an invisible force, are strategic underwater weapon systems that perform missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and high payoff target strikes with the advantage of underwater covertness. A submarine should be able to withstand the hydrostatic pressure of the deep sea. In this respect, the submarine pressure hull, as the main structural system to resist the external pressure corresponding to the submerged depth, should ensure the survivability from hazards and threats such as leakage, fires, shock, explosion, etc. To do this, the initial scantling of the submarine pressure hull must be calculated appropriately in the concept design phase. The shape of the aft transition ring varies according to its connection with the submarine aft end conical structure, pressure hull cylindrical part, and non-pressure hull of the submarine; the design of the aft transition ring should not only take into account stress flow and connectivity but also the cost increase due to the increased man-hours of its complex geometry. Therefore, trade-off studies based on the four different shapes of the aft transition ring are carried out considering both the review of the structural strength through nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) and economic feasibility by reviewing the estimations of the manufacturing working days and material costs. Finally, the most rational structural aft transition ring shape for a submarine amongst four reviewed types was proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to validate thermal hinderance effects, i.e., feasibilities, of fire-proof structure for LPG tank exposed to fire from adjacent burning building. The panel materials suggested for the fire-proof structure are (1) 10 mm-thick wood, (2) wood with fireproof coating, (3) 75 mm-thick Expanded Polystyrene, (4) 75 mm-thick glass wool filled sandwich panel, and (5) 75 mm-thick autoclaved lightweight concrete. The square planar fire source of 1 ㎡, a matrix of nozzles releasing 120-140 g/s of LPG, is used to heat up the wall and the tank beyond, mimicking heat transfer from burning exterior wall finishes. The feasibility is tested by inspecting structural integrity after test, and then by examining temperatures at both sides of panels and tank's front surface as well as heat fluxes. As a result, it can be concluded that, among the suggested sample materials, fire-proof wall with ALC panel only showed the feasibility for explosion prevention with the proven evidences of structural integrity and least increase in temperature of tank.
