  • Explosives are reactive material that contain a great amount of high potential energy. They produce detonation if released suddenly, accompanied by the production of strong light, high heat, great noise and high pressure. Damage at surrounding detonation point is affected by high pressure and blast wave for explosives detonation. Consequently, analysis of pressure and blast wave is very important. This study focuses on the analysis of maximum overpressure and blast wave of explosives for safety assurance. First of all, four cases of the amount of HMX were selected. Secondly, maximum pressure and blast wave were calculated through detonation simulation along with a set of TNT and HMX quantities. The peripheral effect of detonation point was analyzed by calculating overpressure and absolute velocity and considering detonation occurred in the center of geometry by HMX. Also, maximum overpressure and blast wave of HMX were compared to equivalent amount of TNT, which was taken as a base case and verified through theoretical HMX graph. This study contributes to the base case for overpressure and blast wave of complex gunpowder containing HMX.

  • For the reliability of the combustible properties of arylic acid, this study was investigated the explosion limits of acrylic acid in the reference data. The flash points and AITs(auto-ignition temperatures) by ignition delay time were experimented. The lower flash points of acrylic acid by using Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers were experimented in $48^{\circ}C$ and $51^{\circ}C$, respectively. The lower flash points of arylic acid by using Tag and Cleveland open cup testers were experimented in $56^{\circ}C$. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659 tester for acrylic acid. The AIT of acrylic acid was experimented as $417^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit(LEL) and the upper explosion limit(UEL) by the measured the lower flash point and the upper flash point of acrylic acid were calculated as 2.2 Vol% and 7.9 Vol%, respectively.

  • The steam generators of OPR-1000 plants have Alloy 600 and Alloy 690 as the tube material and its tube expansion method is the explosive expansion method. According to the experience of these plants, circumferential cracks were largely occurred in steam generator tubes expanded by the explosive expansion method and their locations were the outer surface of tube expansion transition region surrounding with piled-up sludge. But even though tubes have the same conditions, tubes with the hydraulic expansion method shows the prevail trend of axial cracks compared to circumferential cracks. Therefore in this study, in order to identify the difference of such phenomena as above, configurations of tube and tubesheet were modeled and at operating conditions, stress values applied in the tube expansion transition area in accordance with tube expansion methods were calculated by using computational program and the direction and the predominance of cracks were evaluated.

  • The auto-ignition characteristics and combustion behaviors of one-dimensional array of water-in-fuel droplets suspended in a high temperature chamber have been investigated experimentally with various droplet spacing and number of droplets. The fuels used were pure n-decane and emulsified n-decane with water contents varied from 10% to 30%. All experiments have been performed at 920 K under the atmospheric pressure. The number of droplets in an array were fixed as 3 or 5 and its spacing was varied from 3 mm to 7 mm by 1mm interval. The imaging technique with a high-speed camera has been adopted to measure the ignition delay and flame life time. The micro-explosion behaviors were also observed. As the droplet array sparing increased, the ignition delay also increased regardless of water contents. However, the life time of droplet array decreased as the droplet spacing increased. The full combustion time in array of 3 droplets was found to be longer than that for 5 droplets case due to the longer ignition delay.

  • In view of physics, energy is defined as the ability to work. The use of natural gas and nuclear power have been increased since 1980s to replace fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum. Recently, solar energy, wind power, tidal power, and geothermal energy have been considered as promising alternative energy sources to overcome environmental pollution. However, their energy efficiencies are much lower than those of chemical energies such as nuclear power, explosive, and petroleum gas. In this study, the present situation of the green energy was reviewed to seek out the way to overcome the limit of the environmental (alternative) energy. Also, purification, application and development trend of the highly efficient alternative energy sources were investigated.

  • In this paper, a finite element dynamic simulation study was performed to gain an insight about the blast wall test details for the offshore structures. The simulation was verified using qualitative and quantitative comparisons for different materials. Based on in-depth examination of blast simulation recordings, dynamic behaviors occurred in the blast wall against the explosion are determined. Subsequent simulation results present that the blast wall made of high energy absorbing high manganese steel performs much better in the shock absorption. In this paper, the existing finite element shock analysis using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to study the blast wave response of the corrugated blast wall made of the high manganese steel considering strain rate effects. The numerical results for various parameters are verified by comparing different material models with dynamic effects occurred in the blast wall from the explosive simulation.

  • In order to investigate the effects of three different electrostatic discharge energies on gas explosions, a high-speed PIV system has been applied. The present study paid attention to the flame initiation by the gas explosions and its propagation at the existence of an obstacle within a chamber. Three different ignition energies such as 0.56 mJ, 52.87 mJ and 112.5 mJ were used. It is found that the ignition kernel is bent by the electrostatic discharge during the flame initiation. Tangential velocities of unburnt mixture ahead of initially propagating flame fronts are increased with increasing ignition energy, which makes the flame propagation faster before it reaches the obstacle. Although the flame speed was found to be less sensitive to the ignition energies, the flame developments were different. The effects of the energies on explosion pressures were also discussed.

  • Hydrogen production facility using very high temperature gas cooled reactor lies in situation of high temperature and corrosion which makes hydrogen release easily. In that case of hydrogen release, there lies a danger of explosion. However, from the point of thermal-hydraulics view, the long distance of them makes lower efficiency result. In this study, therefore, outlines of hydrogen production using nuclear energy are researched. Several methods for analyzing the effects of hydrogen explosion upon high temperature gas cooled reactor are reviewed. Reliability physics model which is appropriate for assessment is used. Using this model, leakage probability, rupture probability and structure failure probability of very high temperature gas cooled reactor are evaluated and classified by detonation volume and distance. Also based on standard safety criteria which is value of $1{\times}10^{-6}$, safety distance between the very high temperature gas cooled reactor and the hydrogen production facility is calculated.

  • The number of fire and explosion accidents caused by pyrolysis oil and gas at waste plastic pyrolysis plants is increasing, but accident status and safety conditions have not been clearly identified. Therefore, the aim of the study was to identify the risks of the waste plastic pyrolysis process and suggest appropriate safety management measures. We collected information on 19 cases of fire and explosion accidents that occurred between 2010 and 2021 at 26 waste plastic pyrolysis plants using the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) database and media reports. The mechanical, managerial, personnel-related, and environmental problems within a plant and problems related to government agencies and the design, manufacturing, and installation companies involved with pyrolysis equipment were analyzed using the 4Ms of Machines, Management, Man, and Media, as well as the System-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP) methodology for seven accident cases with accident investigation reports. Study findings indicate the need for establishing legal and institutional support measures for waste plastic pyrolysis plants in order to prevent fire and explosion accidents in the pyrolysis process. In addition, ensuring safety from the design and manufacturing stages of facilities is essential, as are measures that ensure systematic operations after the installation of safety devices.
