  • In order to examine the explosion risk of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, we experimentally studied the explosion limit, explosion pressure, and rate of increase of the explosion pressure at different oxygen concentrations. The lower explosion limit was 3.2% at a temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, and the oxygen concentration was 40 to 70%. The upper explosion limit was 4.5% and the lower explosion limit was 4.0% at an oxygen concentration of 21%.The maximum explosion pressure of 2-ethylhexanoic acid was 1.4161 MPa at an oxygen concentration of 70%, and the rate of increase of the explosion pressure was 62.692 MPa/s at this concentration.

  • Keeping the gas pipelines in the common utility tunnel is useful because it has a lower risk of corrosion than conventional burial, and can prevent from excavating construction. But, explosions in common utility tunnels can cause greater damage from the blast overpressure compared to outdoor explosions, due to nature of the confined environment. Despite this fact, however, research on common utility tunnels has been limited to fire hazard and little has been studied on the dangers of explosions. This study developed scenarios of methane gas explosion caused by gas leak from gas piping within the common utility tunnel followed by unknown ignition; the study then calculated the extent of the impact of the explosion on the facilities above, and suggested the needs for designing additional safety measures. Two scenarios were selected per operating condition of safety devices and the consequence analysis was carried out with FLACS, one of the CFD tools for explosion simulation. The overpressures for all scenarios are substantial enough to completely destroy most of the buildings. In addition, we have provided additional measures to secure safety especially reducing incident frequency.

  • City natural gas is classified flammable hazardous gas and should be secured according to explosion risk assessment determined by Industrial Standard KS C IEC. In this study, leak size, ventilation grade and effectiveness were adopted to the KS C IEC for risk assessment in natural gas supply system. To evaluate the applicability of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the risk assessment was studied for four different conditions using hypothetical volume($V_z$) valuesfrom gas leak experiments, KS C IEC calculation, and CFD simulation.

  • We investigated the weight loss according to temperature using Thermal Gravimetric Analysis(TGA) in order to find the thermal hazard of carbon black(Hi-Black 10, Hi-Black 50L) dusts, and the properties of dust explosion in variation of the surface functional groups and specific surface area of their dust with the same particle size. Using Hartman's dust explosion apparatus which estimate dust explosion by electric ignition after making dust disperse by compressed air, dust explosion experiments have been conducted by varying concentration and size of carbon black dust. The explosion pressure of both carbon black increased as the specific surface area increased. The results indicated that Hi-Block 50L of which specific surface area was larger three to four times than that of Hi-Black 10 was much easier of dust explosion.

  • On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale and subsequent 10-.14 m waves struck the Fukushima Daiichi (FD) Nuclear Power Plant. The main and backup electric power was damaged preventing the cooling system from functioning. Fuel rods overheated and led to hydrogen explosions. If heat in the fuel rods is not dissipated, the nuclear fuel coating material (e.g., Zircaloy) reacts with water vapor to generate hydrogen at high temperatures. This hydrogen is released into the containment area. If the released hydrogen burns, the stability of the containment area is significantly impacted. In this study, researchers performed an explosion analysis in a high-risk explosion area, analyzing the hydrogen distribution in a containment building [1] and the effects of a hydrogen explosion on containment safety. Results indicated that a hydrogen explosion was possible throughout the containment building except the middle area. If an explosion occurs at the top of the containment building with more than 40% of the hydrogen collected or in the bottom right or left side of the of containment building, safety of the containment building could be threatened.

  • Electrical apparatuses for use in the presence of explosive gas atmospheres have to be special designed to prevent them from igniting the explosive gas. Flameproof design implies that electrical components producing electrical sparks are contained in enclosures and withstand the maximum pressure of internal gas or vapours. In addition, any gaps in the enclosure wall have to designed in such a way that they will not transmit a gas explosion inside the enclosure to an explosive gas or vapours atmosphere outside it. In this study, we explained some of the most important physical mechanism of Maximum Experimental Safe Gap(MESG) that the jet of combustion products ejected through the flame gap to the external surroundings do not have an energy and temperature large enough to initiate an ignition of external gas or vapours. We measured the MESG and maximum explosion pressure of propane and acetylene by the test method and procedure of IEC 60079-20-1:2010.When the minimum MESG is measured, the concentration of propane, acetylene in the air is higher than the stoichiometric point and their explosion pressure is the highest value.

  • Experimental studies hate been peformed to investigate vapor explosion phenomena which may threaten the containment integrity during severe accidents in nuclear power plants. In this study, experimental equipment is constructed for vapor explosion experiments, and the vapor explosion experiments were conducted using water/R22. During the experiments, water/R22 interaction phenomena were observed using the high speed camera, and the explosion pressure and released mechanical energy were measured with pressure transducer and pressure relief tube. And the effects of some important parameters-hot liquid temperature, hot liquid injection velocity, hot liquid injection velocity, hot liquid injection time, and cold liquid depth-were investigated on the vapor explosion. Also, the experiment with grid was conducted to study reactor -vessel-lower-structure effect on fuel/coolant interaction. Water/R22 explosion conversion ratios were measured between 0.5∼1.6%.

  • Generally the accident by gas explosion in the working place is occurred at the condition of non-uniform mixture rather than uniform one. This study could predict the explosion phenomenon of non-uniform mixture with model explosion chamber which realize various practical conditions As a result, the mixing level of gas in the chamber depends on discharge area and velocity when there is gas discharge in certain space. In addition, as non-uniform increases, explosion pressure and its increasing rate decrease. However, firing risk after the explosion flame by infrared heat increase due to the increase of residence time of flame.

  • With the increase of the utilization of underground space in Korea, explosion accidents at the underground facilities such as gas pipes have occurred frequently. In urban area with high population density, individual explosion accidents are likely to spread into large complex accidents. It is necessary to investigate the effect of explosion on the stability of underground structures in urban area. In this study, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to investigate the possible influence of nearby explosion on the stability of underground structure with 8 parameters including explosion conditions and rock properties. From the sensitivity analysis using AUTODYN, the main and interaction effects of each parameters could be determined. From the analysis, it was found that the distance between explosion point and tunnel, charge weight, and Young's modulus are the most important parameters on the stress components around a tunnel.
