A Comparision of Traffic Accident Possibilities for Different Pavement Materials in Wet Condition (포장재료별 습윤시 교통사고 가능성 비교 연구)

  • 본 연구에서는 아스팔트 포장과 콘크리트 포장의 습윤시 교통사고 가능성을 비교하 였다. 다양한 노후도를 가진 두 포장재료에 대해 마찰력 측정장비(BPT, Britsh Pendulum Tester)로 건조 및 습윤상태에서 노면마찰력을 측정하였으며, 측정결과와 두 포장재료에 대 한 실제 교통사고율을 비교하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. (1) 노면 습윤 에 따른 마찰력 저하정도는 아스팔트 포장이 콘크리트 포장보다 컸다. (2) 노면 습윤에 따른 실제 교통사고율도 아스팔트 포장에서 훨씬 큰 것으로 나타나 (1)의 결론과 일관된 결과를 보여주었다. (3) 노면마찰력은 건조상태에서는 노면마모 정도에 크게 영향을 받지 않으나 일 단 습윤상태가 되면 노면마모가 심할수록 마찰력 저하폭이 큰 것으로 나타났다.

  • Recently various low-noise-pavement methods have been developed. Since tire/pavement noise is the major source of traffic noise at high speed condition, the core-technology of low-noise pavement is to produce the road surface texture that can reduce tire/pavement noise. The difficulties in the development of the low-noise pavements are high costs and time to construct test roads, since vehicles have to travel on the test roads to evaluate the noise from a particular condition of pavement surface. Tire/Pavement Noise Simulator were developed to overcome those difficulties and the reliability of developed Tire/Pavement Noise Simulator are investigated based on the simulating and measuring the noise of tire-tined concrete pavement and tire-non tined concrete pavement.

Probable Effect of Rumble Strips on Reduction of Traffic Accidents (노면요철포장으로 인한 사고감소 효과)

  • There have been research and studies on rumble strip effectiveness in terms of accident reduction since rumble strips were first installed in 1950's. Research has shown that rumble strips reduce accidents from drowsy and inattentive driving. The present research statistically analyze the accident reduction effect of rumble strips based on accident reports obtained from rumble strip installed 377 places of nation wide freeway lines. Based on the results, rumble strips are effective in reducing accident frequencies 32.3%. The probable various factors inducing accidents are identified. These include drowsiness, speeding, inattentiveness, vehicle defectiveness, and short headways. It was found that rumble strips are effective in reducing A, B, C leveled accidents, and in reducing clear, cloudy, and rainy weather accidents. The results may make clear and expand probable types of accidents that rumble strips would reduce, then reduce the total accidents on freeway lines.

A Study of Skid Resistance Characteristics by Deicing Chemicals (제설제 사용으로 인한 노면 미끄럼저항 특성 연구)

  • Skid Resistance is a index to represent the friction between tire and road surface, which influences driving safety. Skid resistance varies with the conditions of tire, abrasion of road surface, vehicle speed, drying, wet and freezing condition of road surfaces. Especially, freezing occurs when temperature drops below $0^{\circ}C$ followed by snow or rain causes decrease of skid resistance. To recover the decreased skid resistance deicing work is applied. As a results of deicing works, freezing condition is changed into wet condition. However the wet road surfaces containing the remaining deicings agents may not show the skid resistance of normal wet condition. In this study, skid resistances in the condition of freezing, deicing process and deicing agents remained after snow-removal are evaluated. The test results, skid resistance recover quickly when Pre-wetted salt spreading and NaCl was used as deicing method. Skid resistance of Deicing agents remained on the road surface showed that concrete is higher than asphalt. superior effect. Recovery rate of skid resistance by comparison wet condition is 54~80%.

Surface Information Acquisition for Asphalt Concrete Pavement Using Digital Video Camera (디지털 비디오카메라를 이용한 아스팔트 콘크리트 포장 노면 정보획득)

  • In the study, there has been a sharp upward trend in road maintenance cost as the expansion of road networks increases. Running a pavement management system(PMS) is indispensable for efficient and scientific maintenance of the whole road networks with limited maintenance budgets. With a PMS, a maintenance plan should be drawn up after surface conditions are precisely examined and analyzed. The majority of the present PMSs are run by the fact that experts first examine surface conditions on sites, and then enter results into systems. However, considering the actual circumstances of the present time and the increase in paved road hereafter, it is inefficient that experts examine the whole paved roads in person and long-lasting PMSs can not be kept up. As a result, after analyzing the accuracy of 3-D coordinates representing road surfaces that was decided using multi orientation and digital photogrammetry, the average of standard errors turned out to be 0.0427m on the X-axis, 0.0527m on the Y-axis and 0.1539m on the Z-axis. It was found to be good enough to be put to practical use for maps drawn on scales below 1 :1000, which are being currently made and used within the country, and GIS data.

  • Distress data, IRI, etc. are important factors in the evaluation of pavement condition. Recently, the need to consider tire-pavement noise in PMS (pavement management system) is raised. Generally, tire-pavement noise highly depends on the characteristics of pavement texture. Therefore, estimation of texture characteristics may give useful information to predict tire-pavement noise. Measurement of MPD (Mean Profile Depth) by using PLP (Portable Laser Profiler) provide very fast. The texture characteristics by means of MPD can be in a short time. hence, It can be a good alternative to give noise information, if MPD and tire-pavement noise have robust relationship. In this study, MPD and tire-pavement noise were simultaneously collected on the number of asphalt section to evaluate the tire-pavement noise due to the pavement texture characteristics. A set of statistical analysis was performed to propose relationship between tire-pavement noise and MPD for asphalt concrete pavement.

  • The frozen road is effected as major cause of car accident in winter. Especially, road surface freezing on the highway can lead to fatal accident. The accident by frozen road can effectively reduced by prevent road surface freezing before it frozen as evaluate road surface condition. Therefore, this study installed thermometer in each depth of concrete pavement for evaluate road surface conditions which freezing chronically. The result of this study will be used as preliminary data for predict before freezing.

  • Skid resistance is an important factor that control braking distance and secure safety by preventing slipperiness between tire and pavement surface. Decrease of skid resistance at wet condition may cause fatal traffic accidents. Dirt materials such as sand and do-icings on the road surface also can be a factor for decrease skid resistance. This study makes an investigation into influence of skid resistance between varied cement concrete pavements about surface texturing method(transverse tining, longitudinal tining, exposed aggregate surface texturing method) and wearing condition of pavement surface texture(new constructed pavement's surface, wore pavement's surface) using accelerate concrete pavement wearing tester when remains of dirt material are obtained between tire and road surface on PCC pavement. As dirt material on road surface of concrete pavement, sand, calcium chloride and old oil were used with different amount of each cases.

  • 포장도로는 신설된 후 계속적인 차량의 통행과 기후 조건의 변화등으로 시 간이 경과함에 따라서 그 상태가 저하된다. 따라서 포장도로는 일정기간이 지난 후에는 쾌적한 차량의 통행을 보장하기 위하여 유지보수를 실시하여야 한다. 이러한 유지보수를 효율적이고 과학적으로 수행하는 것은 대단히 중요 하다. 미국과 같은 선진국의 경우 도로 신설의 투자비 보다 유지보수에 사용 되는 예산이 더 많아지고 있는데 효율적인 유지관리 시스템의 개발로 투자 비를 적정화하고자 하는 노력이 크게 증가되고 있다. 도로 포장 구조체가 도 로 이용자에게 어느 정도의 안전성, 쾌적성 및 신속성을 제공하고 있는가를 평가하는 것은 포장관리의 중요한 고려사항이며 그 결과는 포장의 공용성 개념으로 표현된다. 포장상태 조사시 포함되는 항목들은 포장유지관리 시스 템을 운용하는 기관마다 약간씩 차이는 있으나 대체로 노면조도, 노면장애, 구조적 능력, 미끄럼저항등이다. 이중 진동계측장비가 많이 사용되는 항목은 노면조도와 구조적 능력평가 부분으로서 이 두 항목에 포함되는 진동 계측 장비와 그 이용방법에 관해서 논하고자 한다.

A Safety Evaluation of Shoulder Rumble Strips on Freeway Using C-G Method (C-G Method를 이용한 고속도로 노면요철 포장의 교통사고감소 효과분석)

  • Traffic accidents on freeway are occurred by various factors, and driver inattention is one of the most important factors causing traffic accidents. To warn drivers about unexpected dangerous events and diminish driver inattention problems, traffic safety facilities including warning and regulatory traffic signs; delineators; rumble strips are installed. In this study, the traffic safety effect of shoulder rumble sips were investigated using "Comparison Croup (C-G)" method developed by Hauer. Through the analyses, it was found that numbers of run-off-the road crashes were reduced as 2.43 crashes per year after the installation of shoulder rumble strips on the freeway. Based on the analysis results in this study, it was concluded that shoulder rumble strips on the freeway contribute to reduce traffic accidents, especially run-off-the road crashes.
