  • Curcuma alismatifolia is becoming popular for cut flowers and potted plants due to its long inflorescence with many showy pink flowers. It is propagated by rhizomes and inflorescences that are similar to those of lotus. However, initiation of inflorescence development of each bract and flower has not been investigated. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to study the inflorescence development of Curcuma alismatifolia 'Chiangmai Pink' by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). When new shoots grew to 15-20 cm in a greenhouse at $25^{\circ}C$, the first bract initiated with a dome-shaped inflorescence apex, followed by initiation of additional bracts, forming the shape of the flower head. Florets were subtended by the first bract when five to seven bracts were formed. Four to six florets were subtended by each bract. The floret positioned in the center initiated and progressed upward first. When the center florets in the upper bracts were formed, florets next to the center floret subtended by the first bract were formed, and formation of the axillary florets progressed upward in sequential order.

Effect of Various Mixtures of Used Perlite and Rockwool Slabs on Growth of Euphorbia pulcherrima 'Freedom Red' in a Mat Subirrigation System (폐펄라이트와 폐암면을 재활용한 혼합배지가 포인세티아 'Freedom Red'의 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the possibility of producing poinsettia with various growing media containing used perlite and rockwool slabs as medium components. Pot plants of Euphorbia pulcherrima 'Freedom Red' were grown in 10 media containing used perlite and particles of rockwool slabs at various ratios including 1:1 and 1:3 (v/v). Medium containing used perlite and peatmoss at 1:3 (v/v) was employed as the control treatment. Height, root length, length of the longest branch, number of roots, leaf area, and width and length of the largest bract of plants grown in media containing used perlite were significantly greater than those in the control. Stem diameter and bract count were not affected by the medium composition. From the results, used perlite and rockwool slabs were proved to be a practically useful materials as medium components for pot production of poinsettia plants.

  • A new poinsettia cultivar "Early bird" was bred by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2007. A cross was made between 'Ichiban', a variety with deep lobed transitional leaves and bright red bracts, and 'Freedom Red', a vigorously growing dark red colored variety in 2004. "Early bird" was finally selected in 2007 after the investigation of the growth and flower characteristics from 2005 to 2007. "Early bird" has bright red colored, wide obovate bracts. Leafblade is dark green and ovate. Plant height is short and stem color is greenish. Response to short day is early and its bracts and transitional leaves are fully colored 6.5 weeks after short day commencement.

자색옥수수 수술 제거에 따른 속대의 안토시아닌 함량 비교

  • 자색옥수수 색소 1호와색소 5호는 강원도농업기술원에서 육성한 옥수수 품종으로 색소 1호는2014년에 품종 등록되었고 색소 5호는 2021 년 품종 출원되었다. 색소 1호와 색소 5호는 알곡은 노란색, 포엽과 속대에 짙은 자색을 띄는 색소 옥수수이며 포엽과 속대에는 안토시아닌이 고함량으로 집적되는 특징이 있다. 색소 1호 및 5호 종실용 옥수수는 포엽과 속대의 안토시아닌 함량이 알곡보다 풍부하고 영양성분이 적어 유효성분을 활용하는데 효과적이며 건강기능성식품 소재로 활용 가능성이 높다. 현재 포엽과 속대 추출물은 식약처의 고시형 식품원료로 등재가 완료되었으며 간 보호 인체적용시험을 진행하고 있다. 추후, 식품원료 및 건강기능식품으로의 사용처 확대에 따른 원료의 효율적 인 생산 및 관리를 위하여 농가를 대상으로 시범재배를 수행하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 자색옥수수 추출물의 품질관리를 위하여 원재료인 속대를 대상으로 제웅과 무제웅 재배 시 속대의 안토시아닌 함량을 비교하였다. 제웅한 옥수수의 속대는 알곡이 맺히지 않았으며 수확 후 건조하여 분석 시료로 사용하였다. 반면, 제웅하지 않은 옥수수의 속대는 수확 후 건조하여 알곡을 제거한 후 분석 시료로 사용하였다. 두 형태의 건조 속대의 안토시아닌 함량 비교를 위하여 UV와 HPLC를 사용하여 총안토시아닌 및 지표성분 cyanidin3-o-glucoside(C3G)를 각각 분석하였다. 분석결과, 제웅한 속대의 총안토시아닌 및 C3G의 함량은 각각 2.45, 0.19 g/100g이었고 제웅하지 않은 속대의 함량은 0.87, 0.11 g/100g이었다. 이러한 분석결과는 향후 자색옥수수의 고품질 원료 관리를 위한 기초데이터로 활용할 예정이다.

Inhibition of Pancreatic Lipase Activity and Adipocyte Differentiation in 3T3-L1 Cells Treated with Purple Corn Husk and Cob Extracts (자색옥수수 포엽과 속대 추출물의 리파아제 저해활성 및 3T3-L1 지방전구세포에서의 지방분화 억제효과)

  • Our review begins with the maize hybrid for grain, called 'Seakso 1,' which was developed in 2008 by the Gangwon Agricultural Research and Extension Services in Korea, and subsequently registered in 2011. In this study, we aimed to investigate the lipid metabolic enzyme activity and inhibitory effect on the adipocyte differentiation, in 3T3-L1 cells of the identified Seakso 1 corn husk and cob extracts (EHCS). We investigated the pancreatic lipase inhibitory effect and anti-adipogenic effect of EHCS.The lipid accumulation and adipocyte differentiation were measured by the procedure of Oil Red O staining, Real-time PCR and the Western blot analysis. The pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity of EHCS was measured at higher levels than those of the positive control (orlistat) at 100, 500, and $1,000{\mu}g/mL$. In particular, EHCS was noted as being significantly inhibited and including a measured adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation, when treated during the adipocyte differentiation process in 3T3-L1 cells. Based on the Oil Red O staining, EHCS inhibited lipid accumulation at 19.19%, 33.30% at $1000{\mu}g/mL$, $2000{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The real-time PCR and Western blot analysis showed that EHCS significantly decreased in the mRNA expression and protein level of obesity-related factors, such as peroxisome-proliferatorsactivated-receptor-${\gamma}$ ($PPAR{\gamma}$) and CCAAT enhancer-binding-proteins ${\alpha}$ ($C/EBP{\alpha}$). This study potentially suggests that the Saekso 1 corn husk and cob extracts may improve lipid metabolism and reduce lipid accumulation.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the worth of extract husk and cobs of the Seakso 1 (EHCS) for the functional foods. We aimed to investigate the proximate composition, fatty acids, amino acids, antioxidant active substance contents, antioxidant activity, inhibitory activity of the ${\alpha}-amylase$ and ${\alpha}-glucosidase$. The proximate composition of the EHCS have represented 6.90% moisture, 7.31% crude ash, 0.52% crude fat and 7.07% crude protein. Among the 17 kinds of amino acids that were analyzed in thd EHCS, the glutamic acid was the highest, with 736.08 mg / 100 g. The fatty acids detected in the EHCS were palmitic acid oleic acid and linoleic acid. The proportion of the unsaturated fatty acids was 83.33%. We determined the contents of the antioxidant active substance by the total polyphenol and flavonoid. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were 99.87 mg/g and 25.02 mg/g, respectively. The antioxidative activity of the EHCS were determined using a DPPH and ABTS assay. In the antioxidative activity determination, the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were 95.62% ($1,000{\mu}g/mL$) and 92.00% ($10,000{\mu}g/mL$), respectively. The inhibitory activity of ${\alpha}-amylase$ and ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ (10 mg/mL) were 95.86% and 76.92%, respectively. These results suggest that the EHCS could be potentially used as a resource for the bioactive materials for health functional foods.

  • A new poinsettia cultivar 'Clara' was bred by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2005. A cross was made between 'Red Velvet', a variety with dark green leaves and red bracts, and 'Freedom Bright Red', a variety with early short day responding and bright red bracts, in 2002. 'Clara' was finally selected in 2005 after the investigation of the growth and flowering characteristics from 2003 to 2005. 'Clara' has red ovate bracts and weak intensity of rugosity between bract veins. Leaf blade is ovate and medium green. Petiole length is relatively short, and stem color is reddish. 'Clara' has medium free-branching ability and makes short and compact canopy. Clara's bracts and transitional leaves are fully colored 9 weeks after short day commencement.

A cross was made between 'Freedom Rose', a variety with vigorously growing deep pink color, and 'Red Velvet', a variety with dark green leaves and red bracts in 2001. 'Heidi' was finally selected in 2004 after the investigation of the growth and flower characteristics from 2002 to 2004. It has velvety red colored elliptic bracts and transitional leaves, and medium intensity of rugosity between bract veins. Leaf blade is dark green, ovate shape and lobes are shallow. Petiole length is relatively short and stem color is reddish. 'Heidi' has free-branching ability and plant height is short. The bracts and transitional leaves are fully colored 7.5 weeks after short day commencement.

  • A new poinsettia cultivar 'Noel' was bred by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science(NIHHS) in 2007. In 2004, a cross was made between 'Gutbier V-10 Amy', a variety with high free-branching habit and light red bracts, and 'Ichiban', a variety with deeply lobed transitional leaves and bright red bracts. 'Noel' was finally selected in 2007 after the investigation of observations on the growth and flower characteristics from 2005 to 2007. 'Noel' has smoothly waving red elliptic bracts. Leafblades are dark green and ovate. The variety has relatively long petioles, and stem color is greenish. 'Noel' has high free-branching ability and plant height is medium. Noel's bracts and transitional leaves are fully colored in 7.5 weeks after short day treatment.

'Green Dream' has medium free-branching ability and long plant height. 'Green Dream's bracts and transitional leaves are fully colored 7 weeks after short day commencement.
