  • This experiment was carried out to develop the preparation method of chitosan which has strong antimicrobial activity, and also tried to investigate as a natural food preservative with this chitosan. The antimicrobial activity of chitosan was the strongest when deacetylation of chitin was conducted at $146^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours with $50\%$ sodium hydroxide. The growth of Escherichia coil was completely inhibited by adding this low molecular weight chitosan (M. W, 35,000) at the level of concentration of 75ppm to the medium. The antimicrobial activity was strong enough against such Gram positive bacteria as Staphylococcus sp. and Bacillus sp.. The growth of these strains was inhibited by the concentration of 50ppm but it was varied in its kinds against Gram negative bacteria. The concentration of chitosan re-quired for growth inhibition of microorganisms was 100ppm against Pseudomonas sp. and Vibrio sp., 2,000ppm against Salmonella sp.. The growth of Saccharomyces sp. was inhibited by the concentration of 100ppm, but Hansenula sp., Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp. and Mu-cor sp. did not inhibited by even more than the concentration of 5,000ppm. The shelf life of Mulkimchi (pickle type Kimchi), containing $0.2\%$ chitosan was 10 days longer than control stored at $5^{\circ}C$.

  • Industrial complexes in Korea have been vigorously established by economic development plan and development policy of industry in 1960s. Recently, Korean government has promoted Eco Industrial Park (EIP) project to recycle by-products and wastes in industrial park In this study, we analyzed the physical and chemical properties for the sludges discharged from A industrial complex. And we investigated the economic feasibility and environmental impact of sludge to energy facilities. The analysis results indicated that the petrochemical industry were 92% in sludge production, the highest treatment amount was landfill, followed by incineration and recycling and then ocean disposal. Wastewater sludge and process sludge samples are collected and analyzed to use as basic data on economic feasibility and environmental impact. Weighted average heating value of sludge samples was 3,891kcal/kg. Based on this data, installation and operation costs, operation returns of operating the drying facility are estimated, compared with cogeneration facility. And this study examines how the payback period of each simulation(total 8 case) with the important parameter changes. As a result, it was found that what needs the shortest payback period is 3years with connection of drying facility and cogeneration facility based on the government's financial subsidy system.

  • A strain SH-517 which produce extracellular keratinase, was isolated from the soil of a poultry waste and a poultry factory. An isolate SH-517 was identified as Bacillus sp. based on its morphological and biochemical characteristics. The optimal culture conditions for the production of keratinase by Bacillus sp. SH-517 were investigated. The optimal medium composition for keratinase production was determined to be 2.0% chicken feather as carbon source, 0.5% beef extract as organic nitrogen source, 0.5% $KNO_3$ as inorganic nitrogen source and 0.06% KCl, 0.05% NaCl, 0.04% $KH_2PO_4$, 0.03% $K_2HPO_4$ as mineral source and 0.01% yeast extract as growth factor. The optimal temperature and pH of medium were shown $40^{\circ}C$ and 8.5 with shaking culture (180 rpm/min), respectively. The maximum keratinase production reached maximum of 125 units/ml/min after 42 hr of cultivation under the optimal culturing conditions.

  • The concentration of dioxins from flue gases of municipal waste incineration facilities with capacities over 50 tons/day are regulated by the guideline: $0.1ng-TEQ/Nm^3$ for new facilities, and $0.5ng-TEQ/Nm^3$ for existing facilities and it will be strengthened to $0.1ng-TEQ/Nm^3$ until 2003 year. Dioxins from these incineration facilities have to be measured more than 2 times annually by the Official Test Facilities of Dioxins. Seven institutions have been certified so far as the Official Test Facilities of Dioxins. These facilities have to be evaluated by the quality control program provided by National Institute of Environmental Research every year. We reported the results of quality control test performed in 1999. Four institutions certified in 1998 sampled flue gases at stack of M incineration facilitiy and analyzed dioxins by Official Methods of Air Pollution. The isokinetic coefficients, the parameter for evaluation of sampling ability were excellent for all four institutions. They were 100.9%, 102.4%, 102.1% and 99.2%, respectively. The criteria required are as follows; resolution over 10,000, mass calibration within ${\pm}5ppm$, ion abundance ratio within 15%, and the recovery of 50-120%. As results, those institutions also met these parameters of Official Method of Air Pollution.

  • Coal ash is generated from coal-fired thermal power plants every year. The remaining quantity of coal ash ends up in the landfills except for the recycled portion, and the existing ash pond capacity is limited almost. Currently, the difficulties are faced in building a new ash treatment plant because of the concerns about the environmental impacts of landfills at individual plant facilities. In terms of minimizing the environmental impact, the recycling and effective uses of coal ash are recognized as urgent issues to be challenged. Accordingly, this study examines the obstacles in expanding the recycling of the coal ash in South Korea and proposes solutions based on the case study analysis. The analysis results are as follows: 1) specific recycling guidelines and standards are required to be established in accordance with the contact medium (soil, ground water, surface water and sea water) and the chemical. 2) by providing the recognition environmentally safe in recycling the coal ash, transparency in establishing the planning stages and active communication with the community through promotion and research are essentially needed. 3) practical support system is required to encourage the power plant companies to use the coal ash as beneficial use.

  • Differently from fly ash, the bottom ash produced from thermal power generation has been treated as an industrial waste matter, and almost reclaimed or was applied with the additive of the part concrete. Bottom ash has various problems to use with the aggregate. Bottom ash is lighter than typically the sand or the gravel and it's physical properties (compressive strength etc.) is somewhat low because of high absorptance. In order to manufacture the ash concrete, we used a bottom ash as a main material and a pure sulfur as a binder. In this study, fundamental research methods that vary the grain-size of bottom ash and the ratio of sulfur vs ash were investigated to improve the quality of ash concrete such as compressive strength. Bottom ash in this research which occurs from domestic 4 place power plants, was checked physical and chemical properties. The compressive strength seems the result which simultaneously undergoes an influence in content of the sulfur and Bottom ash grain-size. We got the result of the maximum 92 MPa. The compressive strength was high result for grain size below 1.2 mm and high sulfur content.

  • The spent coffee grounds (SCG) are considered valuable by-products because they contain various bioactive compounds. The SCG extraction (SCGE) was irradiated at doses ranging between 30 and 50 kGy. The deep dark-brown color of SCGE was changed to a bright yellow color by gamma irradiation. The content of the bioactive compounds of gamma-irradiated SCGE was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Interestingly, the content of quinic acid was increased by gamma irradiation, whereas other compounds were decreased. Although the contents of bioactive compounds were changed by gamma irradiation, the biological activities (radical scavenging activity and whitening effects) of SCGE were unaffected. Our findings suggest that gamma irradiation can effectively improve the color values of SCGE without the loss of biological activities. Consequently, gamma irradiation can be a useful tool for improving the utilization of SCGE in the cosmetic industry.

  • Subsurface environments, including the intermediate vadose zone and aquifers, may be contributing to increased atmospheric concentrations of $N_2$O. Denitrification appears to be the major source of $N_2$O in the subsurface environment. In the intermediate vadose zone, the level of denitrifying activity is dependent on the soil morphology, particularly stratified layers within the soil profile, which impede water and solute movement and create conditions favorable for denitrification. Movement of organic C from the soil surface appears to support denitrifying activity by providing an energy source and increasing the consumption of $O_2$. Denitrirication and $N_2$O production have been observed in aquifers but appear to be of greatest significance in shallow unconfined aquifers. The lack of organic C, N $O_2$, or anaerobiosis is often a limiting factor for activity but seems to be site specific. The presence of denitrifying bacteria does not appear to be a major limitation, based on published results, but the ubiquity of denitrifiers in subsurface environments needs to be confirmed. The fate of the $N_2$O produced in subsurface environments is unknown. Transport of $N_2$O by up ward diffusion, by outgassing at contacts with surface waters, and by ground water use need to be quantified to determine the contribution to atmospheric $N_2$O. Contamination of subsurface environment with N $O_3$$^{ }$ and organics has the potential for increasing the contribution to atmospheric $N_2$O by enhancing denitrification .

  • Neohesperidin is a natural new nutrition sweetener, widely existing in plants of dry citrus peel, which can be derived from extraction. Since the sweetness is 1,300-1,500 times greater than that of sugar, neohesperidin are widely used in fruit juices, wines, beverages, bakeries and pharmaceutical formulations, and are particularly suitable for consumption by diabetic patients. However, the yield of extraction from citrus peel waste is very low. In this study optimal yield conditions were determinedusing response surface methodology (RSM) in order to increase the neohesperidin extraction yield. The critical factors for maximum extraction yield were selected extraction pressure ($x_1$), extraction time ($x_2$), and concentration of ethanol ($x_3$). As a result, the extraction yield was improved when the extracting pressure increased. The extraction yield also increased in a time-dependent manner. When adding ethanol as an assistance solvent to the supercritical carbon dioxide, extraction yield was increased as more ethanol concentration was added. Finally, the extraction yield of neohesperidin was improved to about 162.22% compared to ethanol extraction as a conventional method.
