Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination and Biological Toxicity of Mine Drainages and Sediments from Abandoned Mines (폐광산 배수와 퇴적물의 중금속 오염과 생물독성 평가)

  • Heavy metal contamination and biological toxicity of mine drainages and sediments in abandoned mines were studied. Mine drainages had pH at a range of 2.94~7.86, and contained heavy metals at a toxic level. For coal mines, toxicity of mine drainage to Daphnia magna was attributable to acidic pH. In addition to the low pH, suspended heavy metals such as Zn and Cu contributed to toxicity of mine drainages at abandoned metalliferous mines. All mine sediments studied in this work showed biological toxicity to Chironomus riparius, having mortality at a range of 15~60%. However, its relationship with physicochemical properties including heavy metal content of the sediments was not statistically explained. Exceptionally clay ($< 2{\mu}m$ particle) content was negatively correlated with the biological toxicity for sediment samples collected at the same abandoned mines.

  • Urinary cadmium is used as a sensitive indicator for internal Cd dose, and increased excretion of $N-acetyl-\beta-D-glucosaminidase(NAG)$, $\beta_2-microglobulin(MG)$ and total protein are useful indices for renal dysfunction by chronic exposure to Cd. The target group was 184 inhabitant(82 men and 102 women) in an abandoned mine area known as exposure to low level Cd. The control group was took 160 individuals(64 men and 96 women) in Cd not-exposed area. Urinary Cd concentration was significantly higher in the target group than the control. The geometric mean of urinary Cd for male was $2.56{\mu}g/\ell,\;2.80{\mu}g/g$ creatinine and $2.50{\mu}g/S.G.$ in the target group and $1.19{\mu}g/\ell,\;1.36{\mu}g/g$ creatinine and $1.17{\mu}g/S.G.$ in the control. For female $2.69{\mu}g/\ell,\;3.94{\mu}g/g$ creatinine and $2.63{\mu}g/S.G.$ in the target group and $1.27{\mu}g/\ell,\;1.97{\mu}g/g$ creatinine and $1.25{\mu}g/S.G.$ in the control, respectively. In addition, urinary Cd of the target group had affected by the period of residence and dietary habit for the rice and the vegetables from the target area. These findings suggest the chronic exposure to Cd of the target population. Mean excretion of urinary NAG, $\beta_2-MG$ and total protein were not significant between two groups. In the target group, urinary NAG activity and total protein were significantly correlated with urinary Cd, but $\beta_2-MG$ was not related. Urinary excretion of NAG, $\beta_2-MG$ and total protein were significantly increased in $10\leqq$ than in <2 of urinary Cd level. In $2\sim10$ group of urinary Cd level, the excretion of NAG significantly increased while not showed for $\beta_2-MG$. In present study, urinary excretion of NAG was relatively sensitive than $\beta_2-MG$ in chronic exposure population to low level Cd.

  • The slug test by adding water to well and measuring falling head was conducted to investigate the hydrogeological property of unsaturated or partially saturated mine tailings in the Imgi abandoned mine in Busan. In case that wells were installed with a full screen through two layers with different hydraulic properties, Bouwer and Rice method was useful to estimate the hydraulic conductivity and the depth of mine tailings. In particular, when groundwater dried out in the dry season, the slug test performed by adding water into well to form artificial water table and then conducting falling head test produced the reasonable hydraulic conductivity values. The slug test using falling head test can be an alternative to investigate the hydrogeological property of abandoned mine tailings.

  • Geotechnical and environmental properties of stone fillers are analyzed by several laboratory experiment to identify the possibility of recycling fillers and sewage dredged soils as construction materials. The result of geotechnjical test shows that the sewage dredged soil is a sandy soil which contains 70-80% sand and is useful as an aggregate of construction site. Stone filler has large fine content, which may disqualifies the use as construction materials. However, this material is still useful as a filler in stone quarries or finished mines. From the environmental test, the liquids leached from two types of materials have satisfied the standard of chemical substances in the soil environment law and no harmful effect in ground pollution is expected when recycling.

The Effect Estimation of Heavy Metals on the Microbial Activity during Leaf Litter Decomposition (낙엽분해동안 미생물 활성에 미치는 중금속의 영향 추정)

  • This study was to find out influence of heavy metal concentration in plant on microbial activities during decomposition of Artenmisia princeps var. orientalis and Equisetum arvense collected from an abandoned mine and control site in Cheongyang-gun Chungcheongnam-do. Microbial respiration rate showed the highest value at the time of the first collection, and then tended to decline over time. The highest microbial respiration rate appeared in leaf litters with low heavy metal contents, and A. princeps var. orientalis and E. arvense collected and decomposed at the control site showed the fastest decomposition rate. For both A. princeps var. orientalis and E. arvense, litters with low heavy metal content appeared to have higher microbial biomass. There was apparent quantitative correlation between decomposition rate and cumulative respiration rate of leaf litters, and between decomposition rate and microbial biomass of leaf litters. Thus, the study result showed that leaf litter with higher heavy metal content had a negative impacts on the growth and activity of microbial decomposer during decomposition processes.

  • Hydraulic filling methods are widely applied to suppress the land subsidence recently. But the research on high-efficiency hydraulic filling to protect the land subsidence is rare. In this study, field experiments to improve the efficiency of the hydraulic filling method are performed by changing the property, specification of the filling material and injection pipe. The filling amounts using vertical injection pipe, reducing tee (${\phi}100mm$) pipe, reducing tee (${\phi}80mm$) pipe and reducing tee (${\phi}50mm$) pipe showed 28.84 ton, 42.62 ton, 53.33 ton, and 63.33 ton respectively. The filling rates using reducing tee (${\phi}100mm$) pipe, reducing tee (${\phi}80mm$) pipe and reducing tee (${\phi}50mm$) pipe showed 47.8%, 84.9% and 119.6% respectively. Filling efficiency can be incresed by using reducing tee. This study shows that simply changing the type of injection pipe is expected to increase the hydraulic filling rate.

A Study on Fractions and Leaching Potential of Heavy Metals in Abandoned Mine Wastes (휴ㆍ폐광산지역에서 폐재내 중금속의 존재형태 및 용출특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigates the fractional composition and the leaching characteristics of heavy metals in polluted soils due to mining activities. The fractionated composition of heavy metals is classified into five fractions; adsorbed, carbonate, reducible, organic and residual fraction. The status of humic substances in mine wastes of most sites are polyhumic except tailing from Sangdong mine. According to the sequential extraction procedures (SEPs), leaching probabilities of Cd in coal wastes and tailing are relatively low due to high percentage of residual fraction. 46.4% of Ni in tailings from Sangdong mine is probably leached under oxidized environment, and 39.4% of Cu in these tailings is readily extracted under strongly oxidized environment by organic fraction. According to leaching condition of pH 3.0 and pH 5.6, the amount of heavy metals leached out of coal wastes and tailing increases to 1/2 hours. At pH 3.0 and pH 5.6, concentration of Ni in tailing increases up three times of the initial value. Heavy metals released from coal wastes and tailing were not influenced significantly by leaching time.

  • The Jeonju-Il mine tailings contain large quantities of $SiO_2\;and\;Al_2O_3$ and lesser quantities of metallic components. In this study, we studied about the possibility of using mine tailings as a raw material in various industries. it was found that the sintered mine tailings had a good quality in every respect such as chromaticity, firing shrinkage and water absorption etc. Therefore if can substitute clay mineral in the ceramic industry. Also it can substitute about 2.94% of the raw materials of ordinary portland cement. We can use the coarse tailing as the fine aggregate for the ready-mixed mortar; and the fine tailing, as the filler for the bituminous paving mixture; because both products were not only suitable for Korea industrial standard in quality, but also environmentally harmless.

광미적치장 사면의 안정성 해석 및 대책

  • To analyse the stability of a slope composed of waste material produced in a closed lead mine, numerical modeling has been carried out in two dimension using FLAC, finite difference program. The research was focused on the effect of the earthquake as well as a rise of water table upon slope stability. The numerical results have shown that the slope would not be safe against earthquake event and that the increase of pore pressure due to a rise of water table up to the ground level may result in a failure of the slope. On the basis of numerical analyses and site investigation, two sorts of measures have been taken. In short term, removal of a part of materials deposited on the top of the pile is required to increase immediately safety factor of the slope even a little. In ling term, it is necessary to repair drainage facilities and dam which covers waste material so that the slope is prevented from failure in a radical manner. It has been confirmed by numerical analyses that an improvenment of the stability can be in a great extent expected after such measures have been performed.

  • A bacterial leaching was conducted for pyrite with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans(ATcC 19859) and Thiobacillus KY isolated from acid mine water around Kwangyang area to characterize the surface of substrate as reaction progress at the optimum condition under 9K medium for 3- days. It was found that the surface crystallinity changes referred to hkl plane was observed for 20 days leached by T. ferrooxidans similar changes also observed for 10 days leached pyrite by Thiobacillus KY. Based on he results of SEM-EDS the atomic ratios of Fe, S and Si on the surface were changed to sulfur rich phase but exposed Si ratio decreased from 16.94% to 4.85% during 30days mainly due to reprecipitating of Fe and S as a mixed compound.
