This paper presents a hybrid method for improving the recognition performance, which is based on the nonlinear histogram equalization, features extraction, and statistical correlation of images. The nonlinear histogram equalization based on a logistic function is applied to adaptively improve the quality by adjusting the brightness of the image according to its intensity level frequency. The statistical correlation that is measured by the normalized cross-correlation(NCC) coefficient, is applied to rapidly and accurately express the similarity between the images. The local features based on independent component analysis(ICA) that is used to calculate the NCC, is also applied to statistically measure the correct similarity in each images. The proposed method has been applied to the problem for recognizing the 30-face images of 40*50 pixels. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior recognition performances to the method without performing the preprocessing, or the methods of conventional and adaptively modified histogram equalization, respectively.
In the study, we endeavored to assess the convergence effect of Silybum marianum-derived silymarin and epidemiologically-correlated alcohol intake on vascular contractility and to determine the mechanism involved. There were few reports addressing the question whether thin or thick filament modulation is included in ethanol and silymarin-induced regulation. We hypothesized that ethanol at a low concentration and silymarin play a role in agonist-dependent regulation of vascular contractility. Denuded arterial muscles of Sprague-Dawley male rats were suspended in organ baths and isometric tensions were transduced and recorded using isometric transducers and an automatic data acquisition system. Interestingly, both silymarin and ethanol didn't encourage silymarin alone-induced inhibition in agonists-induced contraction suggesting that endothelial nitric oxide synthesis might be involved in ethanol or silymarin-induced modulation of vascular contractility and additional pathways besides endothelial nitric oxide synthesis such as ROCK inactivation might be involved in the silymarin-induced modulation of vascular contractility.

The present study was undertaken to investigate and compare the effect and mode of action of tachykinins on isolated strip preparations of the intestinal smooth muscle from the nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus and the Israel carp, Cyprinus carpio. Both of neurokinin 1(NK-1) receptor agonist, substance P(SP) and neurokinin 2(NK-2) receptor agonist, neurokinin A(NKA) caused concentration-dependent contractions of intestinal smooth muscle in the nile tilapia and the israel carp. The efficiency and potency of these agonists varied between two fish species. In the nile tilapia intestine, the efficiency and potency of SP were greater than those of NKA. However, the efficiency and potency of SP were similar to those of NKA. In the nile tilapia intestine and the israel carp intestine, the contractile responses of SP and NKA were noncompetitively antagonized by NK-1 receptor antagonist, L-732, 138 but unaffected by NK-2 receptor antagonist, MDL 29913. In addition, SP-induced contractions in the both of preparation were significantly inhibited by muscarinic antagonist, atropine($5{\times}10^{-7}$M) and ganglionic inhibitor, tetrodotoxin($2{\times}10^{-7}$M) but NKA-induced contractions were unaffected by those. These results indicate that two tachykinin agonists, SP and NKA predominately modulate the mechanical activity of isolated preparation from the nile tilapia and the israle carp directly through the activation of NK-1 receptor on the intestinal smooth muscle cells, but in the case of SP action, the indirect action through activation of cholinergic nerve terminals seems to be also implicated.
Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in angiogenesis, including stimulating the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). It has been known that diabetes is associated with accelerated cellular proliferation via VEGF, as compared to that under a normal glucose concentration. We investigated the effects of selective blockade of a VEGF receptor by using anti-Flt-1 peptide on the formation and hyperplasia of the neointima in balloon injured-carotid arteries of OLETF rats and also on the in vitro VSMCS' migration under high glucose conditions. Material and Method: The balloon-injury method was employed to induce neointima formation by VEGF. For f4 days beginning 2 days before the ballon injury, placebo or vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (VEGFR-1) specific peptide (anti-Flt-1 peptide), was injected at a dose of 0.5mg/kg daily into the OLETF rats. At 14 days after balloon injury, the neointimal proliferation and vascular luminal stenosis were measured, and cellular proliferation was assessed by counting the proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) stained cells. To analyze the effect of VEGF and anti-Flt-1 peptide on the migration of VSMCs under a high glucose condition, transwell assay with a matrigel filter was performed. And finally, to determine the underlying mechanism of the effect of anti-Flt-1 peptide on the VEGF-induced VSMC migration in vitro, the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) was observed by performing reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Result: Both the neointimal area and luminal stenosis associated with neointimal proliferation were significantly decreased in the anti-Flt-1 peptide injected rats, ($0.15{\pm}0.04 mm^2$ and $ 36.03{\pm}3.78%$ compared to $0.24{\pm}0.03mm^2\;and\;61.85{\pm}5.11%$, respectively, in the placebo-injected rats (p<0.01, respectively). The ratio of PCNA(+) cells to the entire neointimal cells was also significantly decreased from $52.82{\pm}4.20%\;to\;38.11{\pm}6.89%$, by the injected anti-Flt-1 peptide (p<0.05). On the VSMC migration assay, anti-Flt-1 peptide significantly reduced the VEGF-induced VMSC migration by about 40% (p<0.01). Consistent with the effect of anti-Flt-1 peptide on VSMC migration, it also obviously attenuated the induction of the MMP-3 and MMP-9 mRNA expressions via VEGF in the VSMCS. Conclusion: Anti-Flt-1 peptide inhibits the formation and hyperplasia of the neointima in a balloon-injured carotid artery model of OLETF rats. Anti-Flt-1 peptide also inhibits the VSMCs' migration and the expressions of MMP-3 and MMP-9 mRNA induced by VEGF under a high glucose condition. Therefore, these results suggest that specific blockade of VEGFR-1 by anti-Flt-1 peptide may have therapeutic potential against the arterial stenosis of diabetes mellitus patients or that occurring under a high glucose condition.

We propose an adaptive image enhancement method for epigraphic images, which is based on local statistics. Local statistics of the image are utilized for adaptive realization of the enhancement, that controls the contribution of the smoothing or sharpening paths. Image contrast enhancement occurs in details and noises are suppressed in smooth areas. For modeling the epigraphic image, pre~process is achieved by HSDI(Hanzi squeezed digital image). We have calculated the local statistics from this HSDI model. Application of this approach to HSDI has shown that processing not only smooths the background areas but also improves the subtle variations of edges, so that the word regions can be enhanced. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the conventional image enhancement ones.

This paper proposes a frequency-domain partially adaptive algorithm, called a censoring algorithm, to reduce the computational complexity of the frequency domain adaptive array. The proposed censoring algorithm determines the existence of interferences in the frequency-domain at each frequency bin using a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) processor. The censoring algorithm adapts only those parts of the weights that correspond to the frequency bins expected to contain interferences. The censoring algorithm is also expanded to overcome the signal cancellation phenomenon caused by smart jammers. Accordingly, a censoring spatial smoothing, which combines the censoring algorithm with spatial smoothing, is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms are effective in removing interferences with only part of the computational complexity of conventional algorithms yet with the same level of performance.

This paper proposes a modified Duvall beamformer performing spatial smoothing with spatial interpolation. In the proposed beamformer, virtual array signals are generated by spatial interpolation between each neighbor array elements, then all signals are used to perform spatial smoothing. The proposed beamformer overcomes the loss of degrees of freedom caused by spatial smoothing by forming subarrays with interpolated signals. Mathematical description shows that the proposed beamformer can restore the rank of away covariance matrix. Accordingly, the proposed beamformer can minimize the loss of degrees of freedom. Simulation results show that the proposed beamformer can remove all coherent interferences while conventional beamformers cannot.
